I've started using the angled approach on jobs like this and it's something everyone in repair should be doing but a lot don't, I didn't..... I'm also amazed by the amount of repairs I get where there are screws missing, cables loose, prior repairs, liquid damage when they said "No, there's no liquid been anywhere near my laptop", clogged up fans, bone dry thermal paste and so on. I got into repair because I wanted to look after my own very expensive tech products and I'm honestly surprised more people don't do the basics like cleaning the device every once in a while. I should be glad they don't or my bread and butter jobs would all but disappear🤣🤣🤣🤣 Interesting video Paul, thanks.
It's surprising how many cracked caps aren't visible from above, and as mentioned in the video, no amount of "use different lighting" is going to fix that. Yes, a lot of machines that come in are in dire need to an overall service to fix up all those little matters that you mention, above and beyond the main fault itself; not too bad when you've got a glut of spares on hand at least.
Indeed if only. I'll be happy to have one or two a day, just to ensure that all the bills are paid; the more of them like this the more ability to dig in to the ugly ones.
oooof, not quite the same consequences, but oooof. Suspecting this may not have been a "proper" AASP but rather just someone saying they handle Apple gear.
Always admire any electronic tech like you Paul! Electronics is just a hobby for me; Being a licenced electrician really earns my bread and butter! You make the work look too easy and I always love watching the SMD components dance!
Conversely I admire (big) sparkies. I do wish there was a personal/limited-cert available to obtain for electrical work because it seems somewhat absurd that I cannot replace my own switches/GPOs at home. There's already a shortage of available electricians in most locations. Electricians, plumbers and chippies are high value trades for sure.
Nice one Paul , Thank you, Sincerely appreciate your efforts to show us, both easy short cuts to fault finding as well to think about the Flex cable, usually it will be the last one we would suspect. Thanks
I'm using an IMX334 SONY sensor based camera but I'll be honest, I'm not happy with it. It has very poor light sensitivity so one day soon I hope to upgrade to an IMX678 based 4K@60fps camera. What does help is that I use a good HDMI capture card (4 port)
Hi Paul, thank for the video and sharing...your sw FlexBV i buy Is fantastic especially the minimap in last update...ASAP i'll buy the USB meter to remove CAM from OBS sw..me to use linux mint and appreciate your code are multiplatform....PLS only one advice...i have a MacBook air A1369 with 3 beep
FLiR One Pro. Was contributed by a long time viewer (Hi Jim). Software is a custom write to better suit the sort of work being done. The camera isn't meant to be accessed like this but it does manage okay under linux. One day I'll migrate to a higher resolution unit with proper PC access but for now this does the job admirably.
All custom written OSD stuff. USB-C meter, PSU, and Multimeter are all things I've written for the task. At least because they're all serial port comms it makes it fairly easy.
Fault...RAM to reflow...can u advice the rigth temperature and if Is Better Amtech flux or Rosin...thanks in Advance bye Francesco Timpano from Florence Italy
I would sooner use an Amtech flux (or other manufactured flux rather than just Rosin) but the trouble can be that the board you're wanting to do the RAM rework on usually has a fault in its MCP chip, and reflowing the RAM only "fixes" the issue for a few weeks and then it comes back :( Difficult to recommend a temperature/air because everyone's machine and technique is different with the hot-air, but around 450 and 100% air; will help if you can preheat the board to about 120'C to make the process faster?
Intentionally wasn't posted out to subs as I'm experimenting to see if YT's algorithm does something in a particular way. In the end though, you did find it ;)
Hi Paul, thank for the video and sharing your experience i would subs you Channel but i have other and now YT premium in Italy increase to €25 ...but i'm not a leecher....asap i'll buy your USB meter..to remove a CAM from OBS and have a confortable desktop.... The FlexBV i buy Is fantastic in particular the minimap u add in last update i'll download assp....especially because i love your program are multiplatform and me to use linux mint... Bye Francesco Timpano from Florence Italy PS: Only One advice PLS i have a MacBook air A1369 with fault 3 beep.. the RAM to reflow opfuly not really demaged...can advice me the rigth temperature for reflow and Better Amtech flux or Rosin thanks in Advance TF
Don't get me wrong, as this is just a sarcastic comment for a cheap laugh... but (08:14) isn't it funny when a skilled technician, doing a repair job that the manufacturer can't or won't do, is recommending following the manufacturer's standard? 😆

If all the board repairs were that straight forward. Thanks for the entertainment & shared knowledge Paul.

Only if all jobs were that easy.
Good find Paul.
Indeed, or at least half, that'd be a tolerable level.
Great Repair and Video! There is no substitute for experience. Thank you.
Great job Paul thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Missing screws? Don't tell me Apple are taking engineering lessons from Boeing 😂

Good tempo in the videos ! Great.
Happy to hear. It's always a balancing act in the cutting/editing of what to leave in, what to leave out; obviously not going to please everyone.

Thanks
It's a surprisingly common issue with the battery system; or at least, always worth having spares to try "just in case".
Hello paul , what microscope camera you use ? Thank you , your skill is amazing !

@@pldaniels Thank you , appreciate your answer !
At 2:52, did you ever check the junk under the metal shield? Great diagnostic work!
I did, removed and cleaned up.
very nice Paul you know your buisness very good
Good video Paul
I'm putting a comment here, because a PLD video without a comment is not complete... :P
Thank you Peter. Will probably see you later too on the @joeydoestech stream :)
previous tech got it in worse state than it was before him :D good lord PD is a pro tech and fixed all the wrong stuff with the machine
At least in this instance it was just a missing screw and heat-exchanger shroud; I can live with that :)
Ahh bugger I've been doing it all wrong, I was getting stuck into the isopropyl then I find out you got a bong. lmao
I always knew this guy was a bit shifty 🤣

Always appreciate the support - of course, I do hope that if people do purchase my products that it's so that they can have good use of them :)
What thermal camera is that Paul?

@@pldaniels Nice. Was thinking along the same lines for my setup. Glad to see its doable. Hi from Brissie
Greetings from London. How much this repair was cost to customer, please.
This was about 150 quid with postage included

M1 repair 🧑🏾🔧
This is the "money maker" of repairs; The elusive "easy" fix. Love to see 'em, but they're few and faaar between 😅
Indeed, in spite of how often I seem to post them, what you don't get to see are the corpses of failure that fill the room otherwise :(
Easy pizza for today
Chicken dinner for the winner.
Sorins pizza
Weird, how come I didn't get a notification for this video and neither is it in my subscription listing ?
