- We got the chance to film this cool John Deere 10X 890 named the "Copy Cat". It has a V12 890 HP Caterpillar engine. In this video you will see it in the field plowing at Half Century of Progress Show 2023.

Way better than a 2 Stroke Jimmy diesel that modified tractors usually have. I'd prefer a Q19 or Q23, but a 3412 is pretty good too.

In that soil condition and no deeper than the plow was set, I doubt that tractor even broke a sweat!!

Would make a great scraper tractor.
The axles and planetaries would never stand up to that kind of power when loading. And it is way too light.
We used to have a IH 4786 twin turbo and built up to around 725 hp , Had a custom made dmi plow made for it 12/16"s here in Ohio gumbo sod , It didnt want anymore and burned up a couple clutches over the years !
Did that have the V8 engine in it? How did you keep it together at that power? I guess IH puts some quality components in their tractors if it could take that kind of power and survive for more than a season. Not that surprised about it burning up clutches. Love hearing about people hot--rodding their tractors. My dad and I built a 4x4 tractor out of an FWD truck.
I think people need to realize this tractor is about novelty rather than functionality…it was built as a conversation piece and would never be able to pull the weights that engine is capable of pulling…those tires would be pulled off the rims or differentials would blow apart before it would stall out that V12…it’s just a toy for the owner at the end of the day , that’s capable of actually doing some work, but nothing compared to what the engine is capable of…
You have to remember that a lot of that hydraulic rate for running implements take a lot of power... this tractor would probably be excellent for pulling 120, 000lb airdrill and cart setup
You should google the big bud 747 tractor. It has a 1100 hp 16 cylinder engine and handles the power with no problems.
@@calemcdaniel6450 the Big Bud was a purpose built tractor that was specifically designed and built to do the job it was intended for…it had the power train to handle the loads imposed on it…this “John Deere” wasn’t built in a John Deere factory…it was built in some guys garage and is much smaller than the Big Bud being almost 70 ton fully ballasted…this custom tractor is likely half that weight…that Cat engine would tear that tractor apart if you loaded it up to the capabilities of what it can handle!
I agree, axles, trans, and rims/tires wouldnt be able to handle the actual hp of a 3412. Lowest rated one I've seen is 525hp, but I know from experience in construction tractor/scraper applications that companys to this day have yet to completely get around the rim slip, and modern 600hp tractors are still having trans reliability issues. Clamp on hubs also slip on axle shafts at high load and hp applications.
Any drivetrain mods for the extra hp n torque?

A very nice piece of engineering! Are there any plans to test a larger plow? Favourably on black soil? There are vids on YT of the Big Bud 747 pulling 21 bottoms and overhere in Europe we had a modified 650HP Schlüter tractor pulling 20 bottoms. Anyway: keep up the good work! Any more footage is very welcome!
I would think traction might be an issue with this tractor as the Big Bud is what 75-80k lbs without ballast and I'm sure the Schluter is probably 50k lbs whereas this one is 35k lbs without ballast.
What model and year tractor? 3412 cat ? Want to custom build some in 1/64
About 20 years ago friend of mine did the same thing only used a 3406 caterpillar 425 horse. He blew the tractor in half with the torque no word of a lie and to this day it still sits it busted the main Dropbox into six pieces.
That’s the problem… boxes not built for that power
I would like to see this beast pulling a large chisel plow something or a large disc harrow something that wouldn't float quite so much at that speed. Seems like this was built for a high speed disc.
Put that in some 30 year fescue sod and get a real feel for the power

J.D.(originally) pioneered the Hydro-Static drive, or L.S.T. as some call it ; back in the late 50's....with 'shift on the fly' & no need for a conventional clutch, J.D. truly was the 'Cadillac' ahead of it's time....
@@DavidKalnbach-vm3xc Wrong wrong wrong buddy ,IHC pioneered hydrostatic transmissions in farm tractors and combines and were the first to market .Anyway this JD tractor probably has a full Powershift or partial Powershift transmission and both are totally different to hydro transmissions . Get educated matey boy .Oh and JD just copy off of everybody.
What John Deere tractor is this based on, and what mods' were necessary - ie lengthened front frame to accomodate the engine, larger bearings in the transmission etc ?
My bet it was a 8960 with the john deere v-8 originally.

The larger jds like the 9 series came with cummins from factory for a few years so yeah cat is questionable 👍
that powder dirt and shallow plowing with a 10 furrow and 890hp a200 h.p tractor could have done that this tractor could pull two of them plows if it had traction to do so

I'm wondering if the rest of the drive train is strong enough to handle that engine long term? This tractor wasn't originally designed that kind of power. Did they strengthen it by adding different components with the rest of the drive train?

That amount of horsepower should be able to go a lot faster than that. Maybe a plow twice the size.

A nice tractor, butttttt just isn't Big BUD 747. Now that tractor, is a GIANT OF A TRACTOR. THE WORLD'S LARGEST TRACTOR.
That must be a 3412. 600KW = 804 HP.
A Tractor that powerful should have all the equipment behind it one one pass. Plow, Harrows, Seeder and packers and still it would have power to pull more.
Thought that when plowing the tractor driver needs to look at the plow occasionally, that way he may be able to see that he's not in the furrow ,

That dirt is real loose and is not hard to pull thjat plow.
You almost would need and auxiliary engine to run the A/C while stopped. Just to cut the idle costs. 🥵😬🥴

Why ist there allways so much space between the duals? That means an enormous unnecessary stress for the axles.
Row crop spacing sets the compaction between the rows, not on the seed bed.

A C27 CAT is rated at 815 HP factory tune… so yeah 890 HP is absolutely what it has.
thats a really big plow, but even still, it sounds like your using a V8 hemi to power a pencil sharpener, it just doesn't care
