It breaks my heart that while we enjoy the beauty and opportunities of this world, someone else is fighting for their life before they got a chance to come of age. We can do something about it. Even though we come from different cultures and I have not made such a big decision as yours to quit corporate to pursue TH-cam, I can relate to that feeling of having to pick up the pieces of your destroyed confidence after talking to your parents. I know they love us and worry about our wellbeing and that's why they are so harsh sometimes, but that does not make it easy for us either. I feel you in this matter and my heart is with you. May we have the strenght to carry this heavy load and may our efforts give us happiness. ♥

      thank you...that's very comforting to hear. It's wild to me that so many people relate to the same struggle with parents. I guess the good thing about loving each other in this difficult relationship is the love makes it possible for the effort itself to give us happiness. Thank you for sharing.

      I absolutely related to that bit as well, I changed career for entrepreneurship too and they took it like your parents did and it's always a challenge but as you say keep on loving each other no matter what is key ❤

    Not belonging anywhere and everywhere at the same time resonates with me on all levels. The guilt of being far from family, leaving and living in places that hold pieces of your story and feel like home - although they aren't anymore. Relationships. Growing up, growing into a new person as time passes by. As a person who literally devoured your content in the past week - I truly hope and wish for your TH-cam journey to follow the path you are working for walking towards, because you do have more than one story to tell. And I want to hear them all. Thank you for sharing them with us ♥

      thank you so much😭 we all have so many stories in our lives, so many feelings, attachments, homes, and making videos is my way of trying to make sense of all that. It's a privilege to have so many of you coming along on the journey...thank you for being here, truly.

    i resonate so much with what you said: just because you love each other doesn't mean the relationship isn't complicated. growing up in a traditional oriental household, the concept that your parents can do you no wrong was so deeply ingrained in me. it took me years as an adult to unlearn that concept. hope you get to heal :)

    • @tapiocapress
      @tapiocapress  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      thank you...I'm still trying to be more in touch with how my parents really make me feel (instead of accepting that they can do no wrong). Also trying to share my feelings with them...healing is a journey, hope we all get to feel a bit better today than we did yesterday!

    You should totally read Simu Liu's memoir, We Were Dreamers! He's from Harbin (also dongbei), and came to the US when he was five. In the book, he describes his complicated relationship with his parents and leaving corporate accounting to start a career as an Actor. In the book, he talks about healing his relationship with his parents and how in the end, things still worked out because of his parents' unconditional love. I also recommend Jimmy O Yang's book, How to American, which describes a similar story.
    I will be going back to Shenyang, also my hometown, this December and look forward to perhaps checking out some of these cafes/bookstores you featured!

      Simu Liu's story is so inspiring...hope you have a lovely time in SY!! another cafe I really like but didn't get to show in this vlog - muller cafe. there are also a couple of livehouses that put on indie music shows - 1905 and 原料库. Highly recommend if you are into music!

    Girl homage to you for having the courage to quit the corporate job n embark on your own life journey …and so happy that your parents respect/tolerate your decision in the end:) I had very similar experiences with my asian parents (the job security, vegetarianism…) n hence I haven’t returned home for so long…but we’ve been trying to reconnect these years 🙌 def will check out the books you recommend:) another book I fairly enjoyed about mother daughter relationship is The Things We Left Unsaid by Emma Kennedy :) ❤ cheers

    I used to pedal boat on that lake with my parents in the 90s! I don't know if they still have them, but they were these swan-shaped boats and you could steer them by pedaling with your feet. So much nostalgia :')

    I have the same experience with my family. Luckily that my parents respect my decision of being vegan but they would never admit that their Asian way of parenting gave me a lot of traumas that I still don't know if I can ever heal my inner child. I just try to avoid having conflicts with them now and decide to accept the fact that they will never understand my point of view and I should just do and talk about things that both make us happy. It sucks that they don't understand me but it sucks more one day when they leave this world, the only memories I made with them were fighting moments between us. Hopefully you can somehow find your way to get through this difficult route. I'm with you ❤️

    • @tapiocapress
      @tapiocapress  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's exactly what most of my friends do - accept the fact that they will never understand us. I'm trying to get there. Absolutely with you about wanting memories with them to be loving and joyful...

    I randomly started watching your video ( this is the 2nd one). Just wanna drop you a note that you are not alone in your relationship with your mom, perhaps it is rather common to a lot of us out there. it could be discouraging, but definitely keep sticking with your own choice, belief and preference; just strike for a better balance in between. 加油

    been watching you for awhile.. I found you after searching Shenyang street food because I missed my hometown. I found your eats video then. I was born and raised in Shenyang until 5, when my family immigrated. I connected with this video a lot and with your life in general. Trying to connect with your home, being on the corporate hamster wheel, but really trying to find how to be happy. I just wanted to drop by and say you absolutely rock. I am happy to see your channel growth, and just know you always have a fan in me!

    Parents in their generation think that working 9to5 job is the only way to make a living, and we live in such different world now that we can make money doing all kind of different things online. It's bc they've never done it before, and consider that only 9to5 or professional jobs will get you somewhere in life. It is completely untrue of today's world. You are doing so well as Vlogger/Ytuber, I enjoy watching your videos. You've been creating your own unique contents, and it's wonderful to have a peak of your life and see different life you are leading from mine. You are becoming your own brand, and soon enough you will attract income by becoming your own marketer!

    Hi, your new subscriber here. I have been watching some of videos for a while and I love the realness of your life and video content. I applaud your decision to leave a well-paying corporate job to chase after your dreams. Whatever it is, it takes a lot for one to get out of their comfort zone and the security of a monthly paycheck to explore a future unknown. I was retrenched when covid hits but I'm lucky to be able to get a package and took some time off from everything to recover my burnt-out soul. I am now in a much better place mentally so I truly feel that it's a sign from the universe telling me to take time off to rethink about my life and heal. So...... whatever it is, that you've followed your gut and went along to make it happen, everything will definitely work out for the better.

    Sending you loads of love and success in this journey. Uncertainty can be very draining.
    Relationships are hard, remember that you can change way easier than your mother, who has been hardened by her life circumstances. They sacrificed to give you a “better life”, not realizing that a better life is one of choice and flexibility. Exactly the one you’re living.

I can imagine it being so much more nerve wracking (and exciting!) if it'll be the first time you go back after 10 years...have you considered talking to a friend/coach/therapist about it, if you are feeling nervous? Some of my friends have done that and said it was very helpful to get some advice from people they trust. Just in case it helps:) hope you have a lovely time!

    Hi Evelyn:) I am so proud for sharing your account about your mother disrespecting your needs. It aspires others and me to share similar stories. And it is not easy to own this hurt for instance in my case my dad would not even notice or consider my feelings about a big life decision. Later, from a distance, I saw it was his emergency state at play. Plus a lack of vulnerable and peaceful communications.
    Nowadays me and my dad have improved communications. He says he is proud of me almost everytime I speak to him. And you can do it :) In the meantime I have practiced courage and following through on my own values on life. Plus reparenting my inner child which is a work in progress. So are our parents they are also still learning and discovering. They are discovering that we yet can do an alternative lifestyle. I am proud of you Evelyn. Keep going :) 🙏🙏

    Yet another video that I relate to! I can empathize with your experiences when you discussed your family dynamics and relationships. Being the eldest child, particularly the eldest daughter in my family, I grew up under the weight of not just my parents' high expectations but also my own self-imposed standards. I tended to be quite hard on myself, and during my school years, I often believed that my sole noteworthy attribute was achieving top grades. Comparing myself to my siblings, I consistently held the highest grades, and anything below 80 would leave me feeling disheartened.
    This mindset extended into my approach to work, where I felt an intense pressure to excel, secure the best job, and maximize my earnings. However, I eventually realized that this pursuit was taking a toll on my mental well-being. I had the fortunate opportunity to spend three years in China, primarily working part-time jobs (teaching does pay well in China!), and I had the chance to travel extensively each month. This lifestyle, which prioritized my happiness, felt worthwhile to me. Although my parents initially disagreed with my decision and repeatedly emphasized the importance of stability for the future, I believe they became less concerned when they saw me content with my life as it was.
    I think this sentiment is shared by many Asian parents; they genuinely want the best for their children and strive to ensure that we are capable of looking after ourselves, even in their absence. Ultimately, though, what matters most to them, and most parents in general, is witnessing their children lead happy and fulfilling lives.
    I now live at home with my big family, with four siblings together. Is it tough to have four grown adult children and parents at home? yes. but did our relationship improved over the years? definitely. Even if I move out in the future, I will always be grateful for these few years.

There is so much expectations Asian parents put on their kids, I feel comforted that you are still positive despite these complicated family relationships and is brave to made big decisions in life true to your belief. I can truly sympathize with and relate to your story. I understand that the economy is going through a rough patch, and we are all facing uncertainties. But in this stressful world, it's important to find solace in doing things we genuinely enjoy, if possible. Personally, I had to move back in with my parents while searching for a job, so I can completely relate to your experiences. It can be tough not sharing important aspects of our lives with our parents and it can also be challenging when they don't respect our boundaries or choose to be dishonest. And you are totally right; our feelings are valid and we deserve to be surrounded by people who uplift and support us.🌈✨ Stay strong! 💪💖
