I would like to mention this setup is mainly just for 1st through 7th grade. 8th grade up to 12th grade is a lot simpler with just the student books, the student quizzes and tests, and teacher keys. I would also like to throw in there that abeka is a much much more advanced than the public school system. Going from public school to abeka, most students go down 2 sometimes 3 grade levels. I'm currently enrolled in abeka academy online courses. Abeka is such a good curriculum. Once in high school you have a flexible program where you can pick electives, one of two languages (Spanish, French), and can switch out your math electives. Tenth grade you can choose either algebra 2 or consumer mathematics. 12th grade you can choose between calculus or business mathematics. Abeka is by far the best curriculum I have ever done and have been doing it since 4th grade, we are now in 11th this year. I highly recommend the abeka curriculum.

It is wonderful that Abeka has worked for you but that is not the case for everyone. I was also homeschooled on Abeka. So when it came time to homeschool my own I of course went to what I was comfortable with. I was quickly reminded of my own tears as a student and was now watching my kids go through the same thing. Learning shouldn't be miserable! It is school at home and very traditional. Lots of worksheets, flashcards, sitting at a table and skill and drill. Hours of work for mom and kids. Which some people want to emulate school at home and that is perfect for them. It is a great program but there are many great programs out there and some now even surpass Abeka even academically. And while I will praise Abekas ELA(their learning to read program is wonderful!) and math if you like the spiral approach, their science and history leaves much to be desired. The elementary level science is a joke. Literally can read through the readers in less than a month. Their history is the typical glossed over Christian curriculum you expect. Not a fan at all and I am a Christian! Those two subjects need substantial work! They can't even come close to Apologia science, just for example, in depth and quality. So yes, abeka is great and if it works for you then great! Use it! But it is certainly not for everyone and I can speak from experience using it recently for my own elementary age kiddos and coming from a moms perspective. A lot of Abeka parents feel so locked in to that curriculum and they're miserable! They use it, their parents used it. They tell me their kids cry daily and that's awful! Get out there and see what else there is! You might just have a very hands on, creative learner and Abeka does not gear towards that type of student! It's okay to change! Also, just a note, I haven't found many kids need to drop back a complete grade or 2 to do Abeka at least in elementary. Abeka provides a substantial amount of review built in at the beginning of the year. The only time most people need to take placement tests and assess is with different approaches like math U see or Singapore math. These are totally different than Abeka. Abeka pretty much follows the public school outline as far as method of learning. They are just a bit more rigorous but I wouldn't say substantially. Also if you are looking for an Abeka style Christian program thats cost less, I would look onto Christian Light Education. Very similar in what they cover educationally but much cheaper and without all the colorful flashy textbooks. And something that costs a bit more but has more freedom than Abeka is Sonlight.

@@savants08Hello. We switched from Abeka to CLE. I agree with you. I have found it to be just as academically sound, BUT in a much gentler way. Also, you don't have so many items to keep with PLUS the price is a lot cheaper.

I did homeschool my 5th grader with Abeka last year and I loved it. At first it was overwhelming, but then I decided to simplifiy it little bit. Now I see that I don't need to buy all the books. Last time I bought it bundled and paid more than $700 for one child. This time I chose only what I see we will actually use and it came up to $400. Plus I can use almost all of the books for my next child. (I made copies of the tests and quizzes.) All I will have to buy is art language work book and math work book. Which is about $60 altogether. This way I will actualy save a lot of $$$ at the end, because I have 7 kids that can use same books.

I was homeschooled from 1994 to 2002 and our Mom used this curriculum for us, their math curriculum is not good in my opinion and experience for children who struggle with math. I had a slight learning disability and had a hard time grasping different math concepts,A Beka book curriculum doesn’t seem to take that into consideration, so my Mom after talking to another homeschool Mom she switched me to a different curriculum called Alpha Omega.
Also I remember those books because my other siblings still used A Beka book curriculum I was the only one who switched.

We most recently used Abeka for math, science, history, and grammar/english (the blue "Language" book). For other subjects I love, love, LOVE:
    1.Spelling Power
This single book takes your child from 4th- 12th grade and was intelligently create, seriously efficient, and very effective!
2.Handwriting Without Tears (handwriting and typing)
Created by occupational therapists and goes from pre-k through 5th grade - these folks know handwriting!!
    3. Understanding Writing
I cut out all the writing assignments from the Abeka program which are wimpy compared to this awesome curriculum; written by an English teacher who then became a homeschooling mother but found the lack of good writing instruction very lacking.
    Thank you for the video!

I was considering Abeka but I think I’m steering away fro anything that looks like a B & M style. I would love to talk with as I pray about my daughter whose in the 6 grade. I don’t think she is ready for Middle School. After listening to the virtual (shut-in) meeting for middle school, I’m saying there is no way she is gonna be ready for this with a pile on of work for a daily 8 hour school day. I am not new to virtual schooling. I had to with my middle kid in and out of school with his autism challenges. My daughter reads very well. Math is my challenge with her. I just have a gut feeling if I don’t pull her out now and slow down what she’s doing - we will have a battle with her keeping a regiment for school. She just doesn’t care and glides over things. Every kid isn’t cookie cut for a B & M school system. I have been asking myself why hasn’t America taken a look at Finland’s structured system for school where less is more and their teaching style is not like America. Help, I’m praying about next yea middle school. When is enough enough and rescue from a failing education system isn’t working for your kid?

Agreed on abeka could condense the teacher book, charts and books into less things to keep track of. I've used abeka for about 9 years now and I'm switching for mostly this reason. It's too much to keep track of when I homeschool 7 kids.
Even though they updated the curriculum every 5 year or so you are able to buy the last edition for sever years after. Most people won't keep their books that long.

We also really enjoyed cle. All the language arts is in one workbook except they have a very extensive reading section. The style is similar to abeka but way cheaper and they come in light unit workbooks. 5-10 per subject per year. And a cheap teachers guide. It’s my new fave. Thank you for taking the time to record your thoughts and experience. My wife and I are considering homeschool for one or both of our kids. We're somewhat up on homeschool options and info as well as know *all* about how things have deteriorated in the public schools where it's becoming important to get kids out.
Question: Could you suggest an online homeschool(s) that would be right for our 3rd-grade boy? He has exceptionally strong verbal skills but is behind on reading, he's been great in math but not great when taking tests. His spelling has greatly improved but he's behind on that. We've looked at some online curriculum but not sure what to go with and think that maybe if it is too hard/strenuous it will drive him crazy.
Our daughter is going into 7th grade, she gets practically straight A's. We're not sure what online curriculum for her as well. She admits there's a lot of problems in the public school that is keeping her from learning and interfering with what is going on in class.

I have been homeschooling for 13 years, and the ACE books actually made me angry. They are WAY too easy, absolutely no challenge to them. My 3rd grader could do the 6th grade work. Unless they drastically upgraded their content, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless their student needed remedial classes. The questions after the reading portions are word for word excerpts of what you just read with one or more words deleted, and replaced with a blank line to be filled in. The self checks and tests are the exact same. They are not cheap either. Please, do your homework on them if you are thinking of using them. Ask around for other opinions. Maybe the social studies was the only flop subject??
