Honda Civic Automatic Transmission Oil Plug keeps coming out

  • The automatic transmission fluid (ATF) plug in my Honda civic 2014 kept coming out even though I inserted it securely. It was a miracle I didn’t lose it while driving. I would be checking the oil and all of a sudden the plug would be out again.
    The root cause was that there is a small rubber piece that allows the pressure in the ATF to be released but it was clogged with dirt. Therefore it kept pushing the ATF plug out.
    I cleaned the rubber piece to allow the pressure out and put it back in the two o’clock position (rather than facing forward like it was) to avoid dirt clogging it again. I think it is called Transmission Rubber Breather Cap with part number 21396-P20-000.
    Since then, the ATF plug never came out again.
    Other people in the comment suggested to replace the plug with an original Honda in addition to cleaning the small rubber piece. I bought this one from Amazon for $12: a.co/d/bR16SYM
    I measured the diameter of the new one and it was 20.7 mm. The old one that kept coming out was 20.24 mm.
    These two links are for Honda original parts:

    I bought this Civic 2014 May 2023 with 200,000 miles. I could not find the plug, so I ordered one. Trans was slow until it warmed up, then it was ok. I added a quart just incase that was the issue, and it worked great. The following week I decided to change the fluid. I drained only 1 1/2 quarts of trans fluid! I put in 3 quarts to the overfill hole, so it was very low of fluid; but I got a great deal on the Civic because they thought the Trans was going bad. I found the original plug on top of the trans housing. Thank you for your video! I removed the vent today and it was clogged. ❤

      I think it is called Transmission Rubber Breather Cap with part number 21396-P20-000. I added in the description of the video some time ago.

    Question. When the cap would pop off, would it spill out oil and if it did, did you car smell like burning oil?

    • @gotitdone
      @gotitdone  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It didn’t spill too much ATF fluid. I could see a little bit of a mess around that area. I put back some fluid to ensure the correct levels for the transmission to work properly.

    Will this cause the checking engine light to come out by any chance? I was double checking the engine after the CL came out for the first time and I wonder if it’s this, especially since the scanner is not giving me an specific code for the issue.

    • @gotitdone
      @gotitdone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't get any codes when it happened to me.
      I would imagine that if the transmission fluid gets too low and the transmission gets too hot you would get a code but for that to happen you would have to be losing fluid for a while and driving like crazy.

    One question! I found my filler plug out and fortunately, oil did not pop out from it. BUT I found the something broken acorn shell in there!! I tried to pull it out but it was going inside more now! Do I need to drain then the acorn shell will come out? Or is it okay to leave it?

    • @gotitdone
      @gotitdone  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have never heard of the rubber plug breaking into parts. To start with, I would replace the plug with an original Honda in addition to cleaning the small vent. I bought one from Amazon for $12: a.co/d/bR16SYM. Then, I would change the ATF fluid once to see if those small parts come out.

      I mean that I park my car outside most of the time, and acorn shells had accumulated quite a bit under the battery area. At that time, the transmission oil plug was have popped out, and one of the acorn shells got into the hole(A squirrel may have gotten in). Anyway, you recommend changing the transmission oil fluid in this case, right? I already replaced the plug and cleaned the small vent now, and the only concern is that a small piece of acorn shell is still in the transmission tank.

    • @gotitdone
      @gotitdone  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@wkhong3996 got you now! I think the only thing you can do now is replacing the fluid and see if any pieces come out the ATF drain plug. That process cannot harm anything and should cost around $50. I would think the acorn would be shred into tiny pieces inside the transmission. Not that I like the idea but you won’t be able to fish those acorns anyway.

  • @willchris6949
    @willchris6949 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    this doesn't fix the problem yes you should keep the pressure vent clean but this happens when the rubber transmission plug shrinks from the heat over time it needs to be replaced.

    • @gotitdone
      @gotitdone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it depends. It worked for me since the vent was completely blocked (like mine) and the plug is still snug. But you are also right, if they plug is not snug anymore cleaning the vent might help but the plug will eventually come out and you will be required to get a new one to be snug again. Somebody mentioned that in another comment.
