One thing to also pay attention to is the transmission oil pressure switch. It's apparently common in our 9th Gen Civics for it to come loose over time. I wonder if it has to do with this issue in this video of built up pressure. My Brother's 2015 Civic was leaking transmission fluid out of the blue to the point where it had less than 3 quarts total of fluid in it. Barely moved. Had to put the car in neutral and push it to the driveway. Found out that the switch was EXTREMELY loose and dropped a ton of oil. Be sure to check the tightness of that switch! Learn from my mistake. (The switch can be accessed by removing the driver side tire, wheel well cover and its to the left of the transmission.)

@@ACDesignsGarage For sure, you're totally welcome. If it is loose, the torque spec is 15ft-lbs. (Called the Honda dealer to confirm this.)

Thank you! My son’s plug popped out twice in the last week and a half, drained all the tranny fluid. Original Google searches said it was the fill cap filled with debris, but that was clean. I found your video, and that seems to have been the problem. BTW: my son‘s 2015 has 210 K on it. And other than this, we’ve had no issues (knock wood).

    For those without patience:
    1) clean the plug w degreaser or alcohol. Put a little oil and plug back in.
    2) reach down and find the L shape rubber vent, clean it.
The plugged vent caused over pressurized transmission. Clean when swapping fluids.
Optional: put some kind of ziptie or rubber band on the pressure relief plug.

This happened to me - was discovered by a mechanic. The mechanic tried to sell me a new cabin air filter and engine intake filter (both of which I just replaced myself), but said nothing of why the plug came out or how to clean that little plug you showed that was clogged. He simply plugged it back in, and promptly removed the other items from my estimate while giving me a discount on the services I went there for in the first place. Currently on the hunt for why my car makes subtle gargling noises while accelerating around 35-40 mph. Hoping this is part of the solution.

Too lazy to buy a new cap, i follow all the steps and before placing the cap back on i just placed a few tight loops using a simple rubber band. (It acts like a tight seal/washer) around the top. Give it a firmed twist/ pressing down the inlet. So far it doesnt pops back.😅 cheers

CAT PEE. If you smell cat pee (what the CVT fluid smells like to me) check the plug. Luckily every time mine pops out it lands in the same spot - almost like they planned it that way. After reading extensively about the problem I have yet to see where Honda is taking accountability for the design flaw. Anyway . . . . .the plug blew out but when? There is no dipstick to check how much fluid I lost. So to be safe I add a little bit. So this pressure sensor/valve is a good thing - almost like they planned it that way. But I live in a remote area with lots of hills, dirt roads and soon the snow and salt. I am wondering what may get into my gearbox - and did anyone plan for this to happen? 😜
