  • Amazon canceled its HQ2 in New York City. Mayor de Blasio criticized Amazon's decision saying, "You have to be tough to make it in New York City." In November, the e-commerce giant chose to build its new headquarters in Long Island City, Queens, but the move was met with backlash from New York locals and politicians. Governor Cuomo was in favor of the HQ2 plans, estimating it could have created over 107,000 total jobs and $27.5 billion in city and state tax revenue over the next 25 years.
Following is a transcript of the video:
Amazon is canceling HQ2 in New York City.
The company announced in November that it would build a new headquarters in New York.
Amazon claimed it would provide "25,000 full-time high-paying jobs," as well as a $2.5 billion investment in New York's Long Island City neighborhood.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio were supportive of Amazon coming to the city.
But local politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez panned the deal.
Twitter reads:"Amazon is a billion-dollar company. The idea that it will receive hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks at a time when our subway is crumbling and our communities need MORE investment, not less, is extremely concerning to residents here."
"We've been getting calls and outreach from Queens residents all day about this. The community's response? Outrage."
Amazon would have received an estimated $3 billion in tax incentives.
The company cited local opposition as a reason for canceling its New York plans.
Governor Cuomo's office estimated HQ2 could have created over 107,000 total jobs, as well as $27.5 billion in city and state tax revenue over the next 25 years.
Cuomo said the opposing politicians "should be held accountable for this lost economic opportunity."
Mayor de Blasio criticized Amazon's decision in a statement: "You have to be tough to make it in New York City," and "Instead of working with the community, Amazon threw away that opportunity."
Amazon said it won't reopen its search for another HQ2 location at this time.
However, the company will move forward with its plans to build a headquarters in Northern Virginia, as well as an operations center in Nashville.

It wasn’t going to bring in that much, it’s 5 billion that could have been spent to directly care for its current inhabitants that would be price out of their homes when Amazon came to town and started raising the cost of living.
It’s like being happy that a Walmart it’s coming to your town, sure it will bring quite a few low paying jobs but it’s going to kill the local economy.

The state of the trains weren’t great. So I can imagine how it’s fairing now. Since millions of New Yorkers depend on it.

Sure this may have been a great financial opportunity for New York, but if the politicians are neglecting their City the people aren't going to be too Keen to go through with their decisions; if you don't want politicians and citizens scaring off business opportunity start treating them better.
It doesn't matter how financially smart you are or how capable you are, all of that is meaningless if you don't have the support of the people; I'm pretty sure that Gotham show made a good example when Penguin got elected mayor.

Please research before you reply, “new company/store” doesn’t mean “good”, the long term consequences of allowing these companies usually destroy the local economy.
Thing about mega stores and Fortune 500s are the Olympics, very exciting everyone wants them in their country, higher ups throw money around to attract them, if chosen the live of locals are up ended with construction alone much less what done later to make the areas more appealing for people with money to spend, its opening day everyone is excited everyone pretends that it was all worth it. A few days after the closing ceremonies things slow down enough to realize that the whole thing was not only a waste of money, but it didn’t end up helping the locals, a few venders made out well but the major of the money spent never goes back to the community, the destroyed neighborhoods won’t be rebuilt and anyone left standing is now paying for a buildings that will never giving anything back but must be maintained.

Armando, no one would want to invest in Detroit cause it's a poverty-stricken city, have the highest crime, and there's little tech talent there. Amazon is a corporation, in business to make money. It's not a charity foundation. As for why a trillion dollar company need tax breaks, it's because it has to be a win-win deal. Since it's one of the most valuable and largest company in the world today, NYC will benefit a lot to have such a large employer in the city. If NYC wants to be the tech hub of the world, it must attract companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. Amazon's thinking would be, we have to get something out of this deal too. Amazon don't have to be in NYC, cause they already know many other cities would kill (figure of speech, of course) to have them there.

Politicians really need to work together and finds some common ground, as for Amazon it would be great they cam to LIC in NYC but they should not be subsidized by state and local taxes, they should just spend the money themselves or even just make a deal for the state and the city to lower there taxes in order for Amazon to build there 2nd HQ.

Why would anyone in New York want Amazon when this big company takes the tax incentive? First, it's not fair to the local businesses which pay taxes. Second, it deprives the local governmental services and infrastructures by shifting the resources to Amazon. Many businesses want to set up offices in New York. There are lots of opportunities to make jobs in the city. Who are in their right minds would want this big company take away the benefits from them?

    • @DanielOwl

...because they create jobs that actually keep people employed. If people earn wages, they are off the government's welfare list - and pay taxes. Tax incentives are created by governments to encourage companies to invest in their countries, else they would...just go elsewhere and with that, go the jobs states need for their residents.

      @1xxicecatxx1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@BeeRich33 why do you say its a waste of time ? transportation ? that may be true but the economic integration within Toronto is far more superior than any other city in the world and will offer amazon a new way of management- new corporate governance through culture diversity
Also our financial district(banks) are very strong! why ? The canadian banks in 08 survived while banks in Europe, for example Iceland, suffered far more.

@@1xxicecatxx1 Sorry, I don't buy your "diversity" kick. It's not working for many locations in the western world. Our banks are a protected industry, regardless. Toronto still needs to grow up. We are not cosmopolitain, although we think we're World Class. Not even close. We have too much government, and we're highly provincial.
