  • In this video, we'll take a closer look at articulated tug barges, which are a unique type of vessel used in the marine transportation industry. Articulated tug barges, or ATBs, consist of a tugboat and a barge that are joined together by a specialized locking system, creating a single integrated unit.
Throughout the video, we'll explore the benefits of ATBs, such as increased maneuverability and flexibility, as well as their efficiency and safety advantages. We'll also take a look at the different types of cargo that can be transported using ATBs, including petroleum products, dry bulk cargo, and containers.
In addition, we'll learn about the construction and design of ATBs, including the various types of locking systems used to connect the tugboat and barge. We'll also discuss the role of the crew in operating an ATB, and the training and certifications required for this type of work.
Whether you're a seasoned mariner or just curious about the world of marine transportation, this video is a must-watch. So sit back, relax, and join us on this journey into the world of Articulated Tug Barges!
Articulated tug barge or ATB means any tug-barge combination which, through the use of an articulated or “hinged” connection system between the tug and barge, allows independent movement in the critical area of fore and aft pitch.

That's sweet and beautiful! We have them here on the Great Lakes. The barges look just like a regular lake ships though. Thanx for the video. The lines and colors are great!

I work on an ATB on the lakes, most of the barges are ships that were retired and chopped into ships.

Are the lights different? in other words, are they required to have green and red on the front of the barge? I've seen plenty that don't; just a single white. I just wonder what the rules are for that.

When together it is no different than a ship , red and green required when underway

@@WhatTheShip we nearly got nailed by one during the Mack Race because it was just one white light. We thought it was a mast light on another sailboat. Thanks for the answer.
