I have a Tomy Merry-Go Zoo, that I purchased online. Used of course, it's from 1975. It has a Mabuchi motor and I guess original as there is no evidence of soldering. The issue it has is that the motor speed is too fast. The train gets thrown off the first bend. The second issue is that it doesn't seem to have enough torque to drive the track features that are powered via cogs in the track. The motor stops running until all resistance is removed (just buzzes with no shaft movement). What do you think is going on here? I tried a train from the Merry-go-copter set and it worked without problem to drive the features. The train from that set is driven by a cog directly onto the traction tyres. Thanks
That's a nice find. I'm no expert on motor windings but I know from radio controlled cars that fewer turns of wire equal more speed and less torque. Assuming the motor was correct to begin with, maybe something has happened to overheat the motor and fuse the windings together. If that's actually possible. Alternatively if that loco is like the later Tomy ones it's possible to change the motor without any soldering, so someone could have still done that. Another unlikely possibility is that someone took it apart and put the gears back wrong, it's unlikely that it can work any other way but I would recommend checking the gears against my diagram.
@@MattTester thanks. Yes, I checked the gears and reassembled them. There is only one possible way they could fit due to indentations in the casing moulding to accommodate the larger cogs. I am going to try and source a working model to compare speeds and motor details. I'll let you know how I get on! Thanks for the response.
Hi Matt, I have the Tomy 4 Intercity train set, bought in the 90's, and made the mistake of opening the engine compartment to replace the battery. The cogs and a metal piece fell out. Would it be possible to post a close up photo of how it should be assembled please. My train is blue and yellow. Very grateful if you could. Jan
Hi Jan, that's the same as one of the trains here. Unfortunatley I can't get any pictures at the moment, but I added a drawing at 4:30 in the video that shows where all the gears go. They might be different colours on yours. Just after that you can see where the spring, white plastic part and metal arm goes on the three trains on the left. Hope these help you get them back together, if not I will see if I can get my trains back out some time soon. Edit: There is also a good look at the gears if you go to my previous video in the description and pause the video at 14:28.
@@MattTester Hi Matt, thank you so much for your reply. I just might be able to put the engine back together now for my grandson to use. The whole trainset is like new as my daughters never seemed to damage any of their toys. Just me🙈🙈 Thank you. You've been so helpful. Jan
Hi Matt, I've spent the afternoon cleaning the lint etc off the tiny spindles and put together the cogs exactly like your drawing. So very happy to get them back in, your detailed drawing is excellent and the videos so helpful. I paid attention to the battery terminals next, which were corroded, one end slightly more than the other. I've assembled the engine but really disappointed there's no power. I think it's either the battery terminal or the motor doesn't work any more. Any ideas how to replace them? Thanks, Jan
@@MattTester Hi Matt, I've found a local Repair cafe and a very helpful man repaired the battery connections of my Tomy 4 Intercity engine and found the motor was working fine. It's just the order in which the cogs go inside the engine we're still stuck on. If you do open yours up again please could you send a photo as we can't see it properly from your video still. Thank you so much, Jan
I don't sadly, maybe I should try and find one to complete the set. I had the Santa Fe train too but it disappeared at some point and hasn't been seen since.
1 out of 8 trains were working for me but thanks to this video and link to the motors all 8 now work! Cheers!

Do you have Edward of this variation?
I don't sadly, maybe I should try and find one to complete the set. I had the Santa Fe train too but it disappeared at some point and hasn't been seen since.
why don't you just buy any motor they will still work
True but why not do it properly and get the right motor so they aren't too fast or too slow?
