    Computer programmer here: Dr. Dray is not being paranoid about bots writing comments for brands, it’s a common marketing strategy.

    I’m in a marketing industry. I thought it was common knowledge that companies pay people review and talk up their products.
    Those don’t bother me so much.
    The ones that scare me are the commenters that promote “financial advisors” and give their what’s ap number. It’s so obviously people scamming people out of their hard earned money. One person will say I used this person, then 6 more will pile on and say they used the person too. Creepy.

She was the voice of reason and said "Do we really NEED these?" I think you’re totally right about the way marketing has invaded every aspect of social media.
    When it comes to skincare, you can’t trust online reviews. You can’t trust all these influencers with conflicts of interest. Without a doctor, it’s really just up to you to educate yourself and learn what’s what. That can be overwhelming for so many, myself included.
    Thanks for being someone who values transparency and decency in this community. You are one of the few people in social media who I feel just wants to inform and educate people, without some hidden agenda. It’s unfortunate how rare that is.
    Please be well, and keep doing what you’re doing!

    To me Paula's Choice is the OG brand with a no nonsense approach, balanced marketing and products formulated to work and not make stuff worse. Many years ago I was struggling with my acne using the Clinique range and anything else I could find and I got nowhere until I had the luck and possibly to use Paula's Choice 2% BHA acid. Sure now it doesn't seem so special, there are so many options, cheaper even and widely available, but back then all these were not there for me or at all. I still love the brand, use a range of products from them and I actually feel it's underrated compared to others like drunk elephant, glow recipe, glossier etc.Because of Paula's Choice I started using sunscreen everyday, a thing I was ridiculed for at the time.i learned so much about skincare from the articles on the site and the ingredient dictionary. I would think most of the comments asking for reviews are from ppl like me, real consumers of the brand. I would always praise a brand I see results with.

    • @9melissal
      @9melissal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree. They were special back at that time. The hype was real lol They also used to be more reasonably priced several years ago. But there's a reason some of their products like their BHA are still a lot of people's holy grails.

    I feel like the Australian Gold sunscreen was the first SPF that was actually great for people with combo/oily skin, so it got (and still does) have a huge following. I also think many of us are sick of being taken for a ride by the big companies that spend a lot of money on marketing, because we know consumers are paying for that.

    i have just started getting into the ordinary bc i was attracted to their single ingredient shtick, but i got overwhelmed with how many products they have and which can and cannot be mix and matched. so i watch your videos for recommendations on their products and have only limited myself to a couple of their things. i aim to to keep my skincare really minimal. sure it’s affordable but $8-15 per product that only has one product and they tell you to get like 10 things...it’s not that affordable anymore lol

    Yeah, bots promoting products is unfortunately very common, that and writing fake reviews online for products in order to get more people to buy their products.

    Dr. Dray, YES even our smart devices listen in...yeah, I know that sounds paranoid, however, there has been several times that my sister and I will be talking about anything... from skin care to food and the next thing ya know, it shows up as an ad or pops up on Pinterest! So in the marketing world, I'm sure that they have features that pick up and have people that leave comments. It's always fun shopping with you! Have a beautiful day!

    Firstly thanks a lot for posting this informative video and I totally support every word you’re saying. We really need more honest people like you to spread awareness and protect us from those who want to take advantages of us. Secondly I trust Paula’s Choice team because they’re using high quality authentic ingredients in their products. They’re sincere when it comes to revealing the percentage of active ingredients like aha, retinol...ext. When they say something includes 1% retinol then yes their claim is 100% correct and this is what’s I called being honest to their loyal customers. One of their product (omega moisturizer) I could smell organic borage oil and shea butter in it. I say organic because I’m used to buy organic oils and butters so I’m familiar with these type of smells. I’m not saying the other brands are bad but lately I’m shocked by the number of companies cheating their customers like that company who claimed their serum has bakuchoil when in real it doesn’t. Other without me mentioning their names claim their creams or serums include a certain amount of retinol but looking at the ingredients it’s clear it’s way less than what they’re saying. To conclude some brands need consider its not ok cheating their customers they need to review their credibility, validity and ethics. At end of the day this your hard earned money and it’s not easy to give your trust and money to find out it goes to waste.

    Ok! You mentioned the RFID signal blocking and I will say that from my experience, I have a key fob for my car and if I put my purse in the trunk of my car the trunk won’t close because it senses my keys inside however, if I have that purse and I place it in the trunk it blocks the sensors which leads my keys getting locked in my trunk. Just wanted to share

    Omg!!! THANK YOU for the HA discussion. I had no idea. I'm currently using adapolene and I'm still in the irritated/drying phase of it, and yesterday I bought the LA Roche Posay mineral SPF 30 with HA sunscreen thinking it would be more moisturizing for my retanoid irritated skin. I used it yesterday for an outdoor party on a super sunny hot day. As the day went on my skin felt like it was burning (I thought from the sun even with my with large hat on) so I kept reapplying my HA sunscreen. I still feel burning (again from what I thought was sun) and hid in the shade and pulled my hat even lower. I probably looked like a crazy vampire hiding in random shade spots. When I got home I gently washed my burning face and applied a nice layer of La Roche's Cicaplast Baume and it's feeling better today. So glad I watched this video. I really thought I somehow sunburned my face yesterday. Guess I'll be switching back to their Anthelios Mineral while adjusting to my adapolene.

    What you're saying is not paranoia, it's appropriate and quite insightful. I'm glad to know that it's not just me who thinks that way. If something smells fishy, then it is! I see that same type of pushy repetativeness in all areas of life. I find myself questioning everything I hear, especially on the internet or any type of media. “Don’t fool people by saying sheer”
    My exact thoughts when I bought neutrogena “sheer” zinc sunscreen. I have never tried anything so pasty

    • @meganepelletier853
      @meganepelletier853 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same with their "ultra sheer" sunscreen... That's what my derm recommanded to me when I was in my early teens and using tretinoin... I hated it and it really put me off sunscreen as I thought "if that's what the derm recommanded it's probably some of the best I can get". So pasty, definitely a far cry from "ultra sheer". If anything, it's one of the least sheer sunscreens I have ever tried.

    I honestly think it’s just viewers coming from other skincare influencers pages. Some of them really push these brands you mention to the point where I think some viewers get brainwashed into thinking these products are the best available and will come after TH-camrs that say otherwise. The fragrance vs no fragrance argument alone is proof of this. Idk, maybe your theory has some truth but I wouldn’t count out the “The Ordinary Stans” out there.
