I'm Nigerian and back home we always made traditional food for lunch. I went to an American elementary school and although the food wasn't terrible: it was so processed and starchy. This made me soo appreciative of my African school because you can tell they put a lot of love and care in it as it's mainly hand made and prepared manually. You can always tell when food is made with care and precision and when it's shoved out the freezer and into the microwave. Your lunches look so amazing! 💕💕💕
My school is in England but we don't really get that much food. We use a fingerprint method, when you print your thumb on something how you can pay. We get like pizza, waffles, fish and chips, salads, pizza rolls and other stuff but everything changes each day. In my home country Nigeria, our lunch money is paid along with our school fees and food is so much better there. We get rice and stew (very incredibly spicy but good), beans-rica and plantains (a banana's aunt), fried rice, swallow (its west africans staple food like fufu, pounded yam, garri/eba and which ever soup you want (it is DELICIOUS) ), and the best day Fridays we get Jollof rice with fried turkey/chicken and stew and chilled juice. It's a plus cause you can get more if you want. Sorry if it's too long. 😄😅

Popular brands compete to get deals from schools to try and influence people to buy their food so there’s often junk food for sale in cafeterias along with items like pizza that are from big brands and served in schools. All of these items are formulated differently than what’s found in stores as they have to fit into food guidelines in the National school lunch program (NSLP) which requires low sodium, low sugar, and low trans fat. There’s lots of basics like pizza, burgers, chicken patties, hot dogs, but there is some variety. This can vary from school to school and supplier to supplier. Everyone’s required to have at least one fruit or vegetable with their meal (this is for the gov to reimburse the school for their money). Schools have to be very creative in how they feed kids as they usually get around $3-4 per meal (lunch at least. Others vary) and that amount includes the pay for staff and things like trays and plastic cutlery. This doesn’t leave a lot of money left for the food. In my personal experience the food was not good. I ate it because I hated packing my own lunch. Oftentimes it was just low quality but sometimes they’d serve us stale bread, moldy grapes, incredibly dry chicken patties, rubbery burgers. It was not a great experience and I have heard of schools having much worse food than that. There were occasionally some good meals that everyone wanted to get but my school phased them out eventually. It’s definitely not a great or perfect system but I’ve learned about a lot of the behind the scenes in school lunches and I understand why it’s they are they way they are in the U.S.
If you’re curious about these things and why school lunches in the U.S. suck I recommend looking into the National school lunch program (NSLP), school breakfast program( SBP), and the healthy, hunger-free kids act (HHFKA). As a Canadian from Toronto I'm lucky enough to have gone to a school that actually won awards for their lunches. We had the best lunch lady. We had things like pierogies and salad, soups, bacon and eggs. But I've been to other schools with normal cafeteria food too - instant ramen noodles, dry pizza, soggy burritos. Pretty similar to the States from what I can tell.

school lunch in my school is crappy, I have had a bit of school lunch sometimes, but based on what it looks and smells like, its not appetizing, and the students in my school who eat it can confirm it well, sometimes they give us mush, we don't even know what is so its just mush to us, and the chicken nuggets most the time arent cooked all the way too.

Oh I live in Memphis and our school is not bad (to people who are new) but if you have been going there from the begging (like elementary-middle-high) then you know what I mean. I was talking with ma boys about college, as we have not too much i told them there is the option, if u study well enough, too get an scholarship, i explained them how it works and i talked about the cantine as we was near one of the campus and students were eating, looking at the menu, both exclaimed "I'll go to college to eat" 😂😂😂 they weren't complaining about my cooking but about those of their school cantine 😅😂😂 college food is better than the one for kids, we live in Italy, on Thursdays u can have a pizza (italian pizza) instead of the menu, it was something I enjoyed with my friends and if u have the scholarship all is covered, otherwise you paid what u eat.

I mean, obviously I'm not familiar with korean food, so maybe this food is considered cheap/low qualitiy in Korea, but looking at your lunches, they look 10 times better then the food served in my American cafeteria lol. We eat a lot of low quality American food at my school. Like they try to do "fancy" things like biscuits and gravy, some pasta dishes, etc. but we don't have the budget for it to actually be good, so it looks very obviously like it was pre-made and reheated and otherwise is just very artificial. I also feel like my school doesn't try very hard to have healthy/filling lunch options, especially with the meal of the day. For example, sometimes the daily entree is buffalo chicken dip and corn chips. My school has a lot of selection though. You can get pizza, some kind of sandwich (a hamburger or a chicken sandwich), which ever the meal of the day is, or "deli" which is a wrap or sandwich with slices of meat, cheese (usually American cheese, which is super salty and not very high quality, for those who are unfamiliar with it), and veggies (usually students just get lettuce or tomato). We also can get Peanut butter sandwiches, yogurt, and other fruits like apples, grapes, or bananas. There are also a bunch of snacks, like chips. Given all of the options, I feel like it's no wonder that all of them are kind of not great. It was really interesting to see how your school just offered one meal option to the students.

We also can get Peanut butter sandwiches, yogurt, and other fruits like apples, grapes, or bananas. There are also a bunch of snacks, like chips. Given all of the options, I feel like it's no wonder that all of them are kind of not great. It was really interesting to see how your school just offered one meal option to the students.
