- As thousands of English football fans travel to Germany for the European Championships, The Times reports from Gelsenkirchen to find out if the 'English disease' still exists.
The local authorities have ordered stadiums to serve only weak beer or shandy and have barred fans from drinking in the stands.
This week trouble had flared outside a restaurant in Gelsenkirchen and video on social media showed tables, chairs and bottles being thrown before riot officers arrived.
German police said a group of Serbia fans were eating inside when a large group of England fans tried to get in. Eight people were arrested and one fan was taken to hospital with a head injury.

In the 70s/80s everyone was into hooliganism.Todays youth are happy to sit behind a computer screen playing game.They do not have the same intent. So as the culture dies out the originals are pushing 60 or older now. The banning orders and cc cameras was also a big factor. For the uk I think you will always see bits of trouble but nothing like in the past. Most of these countries came to the sceen way after the English has packed in.

You get your lager louts and people will always hate us for being English as they did when England reached the Euro final so we’ll always be ambushed by some nation or another but largely the large fighting leagues of the 70s and 80s are a thing of the past in top flight English football. I saw this in a video where Real Madrid brought a large gang who were obviously walking through the back streets seeking a confrontation but the only people to oppose them were some women who they abused while standing in their back yards and the English Police had the audacity to reprimand the women. This would never have happened in the 80s as they would be met by a very aggressive mob. So yes it’s dead!

I think we have in Germany a big Hooligan Problem. And East Europe is very aggressive Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Czech Republic, Bulgarian and Russian Hooligans. In Germany is i go alone to a Footballmatch without my son. Every City have a big Group of aggressive Ultras and Hooligans. This Year is the third League very dangerous. With Dynamo Dresden, Hansa Rostock, Alemannia Aachen und Energie Cottbus. In Germany are many Ultras and Hooligans are MMA Fighters and Kickboxer and fight very professional and don't drink alcohol and take drugs. The Situation is for families and normal a big Desaster.
