    In 1988/89, i took lessons from Joe when he taught at Cambridge music in Porter Square.
    I was about 17, very much into stuff like Racer X, but had never ever seen someone do that
    style in person.
    I'll tell you, he was just as good then, as he is here.
    He had a bit more of a Gary Moore vibe then, but man could he play the guitar.
    He had EVERYTHING down, just an extremely gifted & hard working dude.
    Joe was also very laid back & nice.
    Back then he had a BC Rich Gunslinger & an awesome yellow ESP strat.
    He let me play the ESP & BC Rich, like it was no big deal (here, take my guitar!)

    Absolute shred master. My dad (lead guitarist in local bands for over 30 years) saw him live and he said it was an absolute spectacle. "I couldn't believe my eyes." He said.

    I'm a Berklee student and I had Joe in my second semester. He really is an incredible player. He's still into Gary Moore (and Yngwie, of course), but he taught me a lot of Blackmore stuff. Very nice guy, too. Only Berklee Private Instructor I know of that lets you play with dirty distortion during a lesson.

    I just rediscovered Neo classical metal and I love it. Cascading Arpeggio and speed riffing are not dead. It’s not noise, it’s heavenly. When I see young players like Max Ostro showing up and playing Yng effortlessly at an early age. Bravo is all I can say.

    Wow it's amazing how many put this down. I would almost sell my soul to play like this, and you guys (that probably just picked up the guitar and discovered Yngwie) have a long way to go. Joe Stump isn't just some guy that picked up the guitar and said i'm going to copy Malmsteen. He is a professor and a true neo-classical guitarist.

    • @IAmKingHomey
      @IAmKingHomey 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      haha wouldnt it be awesome if you could just pick up a guitar and be like " im just gonna copy yngwie" ? i sure wish i could do that. people who put this down have yet to realise how hard it is to play like that. years of dedication and practice, training your ears your fingers, it takes time, time most people arent willing to invest in stuff they would classify as important to them. just enjoy this good man doing his thing, its amazing.

I'm in a band now that plays large venues and tours regularly (i've toured all over the US and Europe), but I owe a lot to this guy and his enthusiasm, his technique, and his overall willingness to pretty much say, "hey anyone can shred if they work hard enough."

He outperformed other players such as Ynwie a long time ago, he has his own style and even some thrash influence which I like a lot. JOE you are my favorite guitar player!!!!!

  • @TheShredfester

    Kills me, all these comparisons to Yngwie.. It's called the Harmonic Minor scale, it's called Neo-Classical, it's called studying the Masters of Classical music, Joe is great and he's one of the finest Neo-Classical musicians out there.. I bought all of his CDs and they're grand.. I very much like Yngwie Malmsteen as he crushed me with first solo album, it had an incredible impact on all who'd play the genre.. Yngwie isn't Joe and Joe isn't Yngwie and I'm so glad because I can listen to more Harmonic Minor compositions, the "Thinking Mans" scale.. I'd take this genre over any other music, Neo-Classical Melodic Fusion Shred RULZ!!! Regardless of who is playing and with no comparisons as who's better, it's about the music.. Neo-Classical MUSIC!!!

      +TheShredfester I agree with what you say... but the reality is Yngwie wrote the book for this kind of playing. He took things to a new level. He is Joe Stump's main influence. I love Joe Stump, he's a great player and a great person.The neo-classical genre is my favorite too. If you get a chance checkout George Bellas, Kelly Simonz, and Katsu Ohta they're brilliant players. Cheers

    • @TheShredfester
      @TheShredfester 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +epic103 Got all of George Bellas' CDs and his guitar study course, he's a very sophisticated player and his compositions are futuristic and at the same time well rooted in the classical time period as well.. I certainly enjoy his playing and his tone is wicked.. I'm down with all the players you've mentioned, Kelly and Katsu are stellar.. The Japanese understand great musicianship and the beauty of incendiary fretboard wizardry melodic fusion shred!!! They get "it"!!! Yokozeki, Shima, Marco Ferrigno and Vinnie Moore, Chris Impellitteri, the Neo-Classical isn't leaving anytime soon.. Takayoshi Ohmura is a samurai as well..

    This guy was my teacher one semester at Berklee. I was super into John McLaughlin and was hoping to get tips on picking technique. I remember he would start the metronome, and then start picking patterns that were completely irrelevant to what the metronome was doing. One time I busted out a little Sixteenth Century Greensleeves, and he asked me to show him how to play it. Good times.

    • @vitalygolub9716
      @vitalygolub9716 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He definitely does. Tbh I hear very little Malmsteen in his playing. A lot of the "Malmsteen licks" are simple Vivaldi/Paganini runs that Yngwie made his own, so all the idiots who hear these say "these are Malmsteen licks". Joe does these very signature slow bends which IMHO are super Blackmore influenced, which after you've listened to Joe a few times make him instantly recognizable.@@spotsthecat7913

I will say that Joe's technique seems to be a good bit better. I would also bet that Joe is faster as well. Not super crazy about all his music but I am learning from it and he's a super nice guy. I've exchanged a few emails with him. Very down to earth and cool person. I found out we have the same picking technique where the movement is based only in the thumb and index finger, no wrist movement for the speedy shred runs.

    I studied with Joe, in Boston, way back in '89-90.
    He was very much into Gary Moore, back at that time, and played a lot of Gary's 80's
    stuff note for note.
    I remember asking him to teach me a Zakk Wylde solo (Fire in the sky), and he listened to
    the tape, then mastered it within one minute.
    He was like, "It's very basic, just pentatonic picked stuff."
    I remember Joe was a really nice guy & pretty laid back.

    All you's sayin Joe's any sort of yngvie clone, etc, listen to "Texas Chainsaw Boogie" please, preferably before you shoot your mouth off. It's the first song I ever heard from him, and I went, whoa, wait, who's that, and how have I not heard him before? His playing does have a 'derivative' quality, but I would not be too quick to judge based on that.
