As a polyamorous person, I can tell you that open relationships very often and very successfully work. Within a certain community that have a less possessive/jealous mindset. You'll find lots of successful open and poly relationships within hippie or art scenes in Europe.
When Aba died I felt that in my soul. I had a crazy ex girlfriend who said something similar to me because I'm a mixed Indian/European and South African guy and she was a white girl. I’m taking a break of sorts. But it’s structured. We both agreed to focus on only ourselves and get ourselves back to where we were before we got toxic with each other. We both gave each other rules of sorts like no other people and no substances abuse. And it’s been working very well. We talk to each still just only a couple times a day. It used to be all the time, smothering almost. But the health of our relationship has gone up and up and up and it’s only been a couple days of this.

It's rare for anyone to be able to pull an open relationship off. Every woman I've seen want an open relationship has at some point been angry as hell for some kind of breach of trust that the man was just supposed to automatically know about AND they all started with the mindset of men will never stay faithful anyway so I might as well pretend to have fun too.
For most men who want an open relationship, the outcome won't be a bunch of 1 night stands with women he will never see again, it doesn't happen that way. He would have to find women he is attracted to and make a connection where he can have sex with them on a regular basis. Why did she think it would be as easy as it is for her? All she has to do is go outside and point at her genitals and a line will form. He actually has to put in work for it. "You can go have sex but you can't build a relationship" means he can't go have sex then. Finding a woman who will have a 1 night stand whenever he is in the mood for sex outside the relationship is not easy. If she wanted it to be that easy then she should have gone out and helped him find those 1 night stand women so he wouldn't have to build a relationship with them.

About the "going back to an ex thing" actually makes sense.
The reason girl1 is upset that girl2 went back to her ex during their "break" is that it makes girl1 question if girl2 was ever over her ex to begin with. If she would have gotten together with any random person, it is different because it would be a new attraction during their break, but hooking up with her ex who she supposedly was over will make her wonder if she was secretly into her own ex during the time they were together too, so it is a trust issue.
It is not the same as the rule some people have that you can't date your friends exes, it is that dating your own ex after you go on a break essentially throws any chance of going back together out the window. I can understand it.

Damn. I tried it once. My gf had no time for me and I wanted to take a break since I felt like I was asking her for more time than she could give. I thought that I'd give her some space until she had time again. The break went on for too long, the issues weren't resolved (after many attempts on my end) so I broke things off.
I really wasn't trying to see anyone else or explore other options. I was going to focus more on myself and my goals while she was busy pursuing her goals.

In my case it was more because I was too dependant on my ex, too afraid to break it off cuz of past traumas that made me slightly clingy/afraid to lose people. Now I know I should have just broken up with him but in that stage of my life I just couldn't do it, even tho deep down I really wanted to. And BTW I did try to fix our relationship so so much but always when I talked to him it was only false promises from his side just to that I would always give him another chance. Nobody can say I didn't try or that my communication skills are not good, the fault lies in the person who pretends to listen and then next day claims they "forgot".
Taking a pause and revisiting contentious or complex issues when two parties have had a chance to go away, cool down and reflect on the points raised seems like reasonable, mature and effective conflict resolution methodology to me.
I agree that if they are wanting to have sex with others then, yes! I'd feel comfortable with your generalization. But there's nothing intrinsically ignorant and cowardly with the concept of taking a break if the intention is to repair and refocus.

I once broke it off with a dude who slept around, when I said "done", he heard "break". A month later when he finds out I have no intention of getting back with him, he's so shocked and confused. He can't compute the fact that I'm not putting any obligation on myself for his benefit. When you break it off with someone, it's for a reason. If you get back together down the line, that's another story for another day. You can't limit yourself when you let go. Otherwise you're not actually letting go.
This is why it’s a good idea to completely cut the person off when you break up. Block them and anyone to do directly with them from your life and never look back.
