The studio version is an ideal example of what Jimmy Page calls his "guitar army", with many symbiotic layers perfectly mixed. The great guitarist Steve Vai testifies to this, referring to Jimmy's performance in this song as "genius". As a guitarist I am floored by this every time I hear it, and I am so impressed with how the song is pulled off here. Again floored by the choice of notes, tones, and embellishments , to convey this masterpiece live.

Jimmy Page has a B Bender on that Telecaster. It is a device that connects to one of the strap anchor points on the guitar. You pull against the strap and it bends the B string up one pitch. Brilliant use of the B Bender in this song. Jimmy Page is just a regular guy, as are all musicians. But put a guitar in his hands and creative genius flows from his soul to the world! Such a privilege to witness the gift that he has to share!

@zombywoof1015 I respect your opinion, I started playing drums as a teen and my guitar player was a JP worshipper, as are many guitarists. Me, I love JB too, he was definitely one of the best. But realistically neither Bonham nor Plant would be able to perform like that forever. Bonham passed away anyhow. The band was close to breaking up anyway. All I'm saying is page and jpj were good enough to move on, but plant I think knew he had to move on from the heavier rock. I saw plant 3 timed and Jimmy page once during his outrider tour. They both played LZ tunes, jp played an instrumental of stairway as an encore. The audience got to do vocals. Jason Bonham played drums. Why didn't they get together again? If it was just because JB died that is kinds sad. Even if he was the best fit during the 70s...

    • @paulmegna210
      @paulmegna210 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

@zombywoof1015 yea let's face it the last album says it all. It was over imo, unless they became a touring band that would play just the albums they made cuz page and plant were definitely diverging on where they had to go especially plant and Bono was his rl best friend and they joined the band together basically. But the new direction RP was taking, mellowing out quite a bit, turning his vocal range abilities to more softer rock. Bonham woulda had to adapt and I think that woulda made it a bad fit...

Along with The Rain Song, No Quarter, Over The hills, and a few others, they come off real well in a solo acoustic performances. Another gem off of graffiti is Sick Again. Often undermentioned but one of the best production masterpieces by Pagey. But then there's Achilles Last Stand. Where would a billions musicians be in this world had there never been these true gods of guitar rock, poetry and voice, and a rhythm sectional that went from delicate musings in folklore, to powerhouse thunder that crashed levees. These four guys inspired billions and will continue to for generations to come, for as long as this planet rocks. Schmidty

Another splendid example of the grand master piecing together the myriad layers of a studio song in a manner that renders the studio version almost stale in comparison -- or at least in a manner that makes me wish there was another studio version with good quality recording in which he played the song this way. And that is saying a lot given how magnificent is the studio version. This already highly poignant song becomes agonizing with the new treatment that this guitarist employs here with multiple slow bends and vibrato that exist no where in the studio. This is evidenced in the intro but particularly magnificent at 4:37 through 5:07 for example. I still cannot believe this guitarists ability to take multiple guitar layers (I believe 9 in the studio) and pull it off live where there is but 1 guitar (not counting JPJ's metal scraping sounds on that hydra he is cradling). The guitarist knows what the essence of the song is and performs that essence, even though this means he has to switch quickly between chords, bends, mini solos, etc. and put together this Frankenstein thing that is not the studio song at all yet possibly more what was originally meant. (A more absurd example is in Achilles from the same concert).
On a similar note, at 6:14 there is a second lead that was not employed in the studio but was used live in 77 and 79. This guitarist once said that a lead is like a meditation on a song. If you go back and listen to his live leads you can hear the truth to those words. This second lead is a great example of that. I have never heard any other guitarist capable of distilling the essence of a song into 20 seconds or so of improvisational exploration and expression. And make no mistake, he never played the same lead twice -- which means he is truly creating instantaneously from impulse. This guitarist's leads to me are thus the purest art I have ever seen or heard. I have the distinct impression that when performing, the universe is the song and he is expressing Self within that universe. Total emersion in almost all his performances while with Led Zeppelin.
One final thing - I am also thoroughly impressed with the ability of this band to create the mood of this song. I probably shouldn't be so surprised given their ability to play any genre, but for some reason this song always stood out for me as a not so Zeppelinish kind of thing and yet it is in my top 10. The ability to immediately - on the first chord and arpeggio - create the feeling of lost love.... I mean, come on. There are a few Zeppelin songs where the distinction between creating and finding is blurred. Because of their ability to go all the way down to the essence of whatever they are doing, I sometimes get the sense that the song they are turning over to me already existed out there, and they just found it; in its perfect state. I think the best artists find things rather than create things. For example - at 6:59 in this version there is the famous 10 years gone melody line. Listen to the same melody line from the studio version. That thing wasn't created in 1975. Its from like 1.7 million years ago, isn't it? Pretty sure its part of our DNA, or from some place pre-DNA - they just found it.

    "Ten Years Gone"
Then, as it was, then again it will be
And though the course may change sometimes
    Rivers always reach the sea
Flying skies of fortune, each a separate way
On the wings of maybe, downing birds of prey
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to go
But as the eagle leaves the nest, got so far to go
Changes fill my time, baby, that's alright with me
In the midst I think of you, and how it used to be
Did you ever really need somebody
    And really need 'em bad?
Did you ever really want somebody
The best love you ever had?
Do you ever remember me, baby?
    Did it feel so good?
Cause it was just the first time
    And you knew you would
Through the eyes and I sparkle, senses growing keen
Taste your love along the way, see your feathers preen
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to grow
We are eagles of one nest, the nest is in our soul
Vixen in my dreams, with great surprise to me
Never thought I'd see your face the way it used to be
    Oh darling, oh darling
Oh, oh darling, oh yeah, oh darling
I'm never going to leave you
    I'm never going to leave
    Holding on, ten years gone
Ten years gone, holding on, ten years gone
    I'm never, I'm never
    Ooh, yeah

Psalms 49:4“I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.” Here is a Fool in the Rain Bible study. th-cam.com/video/laOFpGNm1IY/w-d-xo.html God bless fam.

I love youtube. It is a time machine. I'm so amazed at all the stuff people have found from ages past of recordings and footage of the greats during a great time. I was fortunate enough to both be able to see Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, David Bowie (although his Reality tour was outstanding) in the seventies when they were so ripe and powerful. Corporate music has killed that ascension but the record of it is still with us.

I saw them live in Columbia, SC while a freshman at the University of South Carolina. They were a backup band for Blue Oyster Cult. Skynard ended the show with Freebird and it was as good as the clip you reviewed. I then transferred to Louisiana State University and had tickets to the show they were flying to when their plane crashed. I still have those tickets framed and they are on my wall in my den. Yes I am 68 years old but I still have vivid memories of that one performance I did get to see

"Though the course may change sometimes rivers always reach the sea" "As the eagle leaves the nest its got so far to go" Some of the greatest lyrics ever written (next to bob dylans work), and by the way, leave it to John Paul Jones to play a 6 string, 12 string, and mandolin all in one. Magnificent.

According to Plant, this song was written about a girl he was dating just in the begining as Zeppelin started gaining notoriety. He was touring, and was starting to tour relentlessly, taking away time from her. Basically, she said "look it is either me or your little band" more or less. Plant's feeling was, I must continue, I am on to something wonderful....and he was right. Sadly she is ten years gone plus now, but what a wonderful song! And a simply beautiful band! Zep 4 ever!

Nobody had what Zeppelin had. Sure, there were other great bands playing certain kinds of music (Stones, Who, Floyd) but they were so narrow compared to Zep. They took risks no other band did with their sound and style, and, with very few exceptions (The Crunge, maybe?) it worked every time. Sure, they paid for it in the end, but while they were flying, there was no-one to touch them. And there still isn't.
