This is such a great way of doing the long tail cast on (two balls of yarn). I have a sweater that calls for a LTCO with 234 stitches. I HATE running out of tail or having too much; this is perfect. I usually do a cable cast on or knitted cast on when there are more than 30 stitches to cast on, but I think this will be my new way of casting on. I also now understand the mechanics of the LTCO and why many of my projects call for a CO row and a couple of “set up” rows. Most importantly, I now know my CO is NOT my first row.
I love the way you use two colors to show what looks like the first row is actually part of the cast on and what it looks like when you knit the first row. I am embarrassed to say how long it took me to realize that.

dispelling the myths with actual visible proof ...great as always ...thank you ...just tried something I hadn't seen before ...casting for a triangle shawl ...the cast on is only the slip knot ...row 1 kfb ...row 2 kfb k to the end of row ...and so it goes ...a beautiful sharp point or corner for a diagonal scarf / shawl ...hint or comments always appreciated ...t.
Yes, that makes a lovely point. You can do it without the slip knot though. Just put a half hitch on your needle and then start out as you describe. I am not a fan of knots in my knitting. You could also do a crochet provisional cast on for that one stitch, then k1, turn, kfb, turn, etc. Then take out the crochet and you would have a nice point without a knot. Let me know what you think. I love thinking knitters. AKA engineers with yarn.

I loved this! your last example in this video - of debunking the theory of casting on over two needles to create a more stretchy/less tight cast on (which doesn't work as intended) - makes so much sense in your two color yarn demonstration. As stated/demonstrated earlier in this video, it is the management of the white thumb yarn (the tail yarn) that controls the stretch of the finished fabric at its cast on edge, not the size of the purple loops from the working yarn held over the finger during LTCO (made larger by casting on over two needles). I found the demonstrations in this video to be very helpful, thank you Suzanne!

Great explanations here. I've been a knitter for decades and I've found so much of knitting becomes personal preference rather than strict adherence to patterns. I will often adjust which row will be my RS based in the look of the cast-on.

Hi, Suzanne. I enjoy your tutorials so much. I'm not sure what others think, but it sure helps me to watch you "knit to the other end" at a normal/natural pace and not speed up the video when you are demonstrating because when I watch you knit, my eyes and brain are "recording" your movements and I learn how to knit and purl exactly as you would - your technique. I am learning "muscle/finger memory" for my fingers and hands by watching your finger motions and hand motions as you knit and purl at a natural pace. I realize you are trying to save time and hurry your knitting along to get to the other end of a row in order to get to the crux of what you are teaching in a video. I am learning continental knitting and purling through watching your movements with your needles and yarn. I never thought I could learn this. I am an old English thrower who is tickled pink at realizing I can actually do this by watching your technique and imitating your finger movements. It is amazing. Thank you for sharing all of your expertise with the rest of us. God bless. :)

The two colors also show us that the cast on, unlike a row, does not allow yarn to flow from the stitch to the space between the stitches as we expect it to do when we cast on over two needles. Two different threads. Thanks for helping us understand exactly what is happening.

I am glad you demonstrated the two needle cast on loops. I tried that once an thought my knitting looked sloppy afterward. I use the regular cast on. Thank you for the tip on how to cast stitches to the inch. I will be paying more attention to my cast on next time.

I love how well you explained and showed the long tail cast on. I just wish I knew WHEN to use a long tail vs not. Thank you!
The long tail cast on is the most widely used, or should be the most widely used cast on. It is the default when the cast on method is not mentioned in the cast on directions. It has medium stretch and creates a nice structured edge. I do not use it for buttonholes, which should be tight, or for cast ons at the underarm of sweaters, or necklines when joining from one shoulder to the other.

I thought you might be interested in my cuff-down sock technique - after several times of making the cuff too tight. For sock yarn, and socks to be knit on US 1s, and using a long-tail cast-on, I cast on and work the first round on US 4s; switch to US 3s for the next two rounds; switch to US 2s for the next two rounds, then finally switch to US 1s. I find this works well for those of us who have larger calves than supermodels. And, of course, depending on how long you like the leg of the sock.

Super interesting!! I've heard that using 2 needles to CO is helpful for beginners who have a tendency to strangle the the yarn and make the first row of stitches so tight they can't get their needle in to make a stitch. I know this is true, because I've been there, and it did help me. lol! That was quite a few years back, but I do remember it still to this day.
My question is, how would you notate this in a pattern? Especially a beginner pattern. They are never going to follow this discussion, so how do you write the pattern and explain to them how to count rows? I've been writing stuff for first year people, and something like this would leave them totally confused. Still, I don't want to set people up with bad habits. And suggestions, Suzanne? I've knitted plenty of things with a long tail CO, and I've never seen anyone mention skipping the "first row" when counting. Who would ever think you could do such a deep dive on a long tail CO? Great video!
Just be sure to always teach Long Tail Cast On to beginners. They tend to use their first learned cast on forever. I still meet people who use the cable cast on (tightest cast on there is) for all of their knitting after 30 years because that is what they were taught at the beginning. The industry standard is LTCO. You don't need to explain the ins and outs until after they have been doing it for awhile. This video was intended for more experienced knitters, and that is why I reference that I have lots of other videos on LTCO where I show it done very slowly so that you can learn to do it. That helps! Thanks Suzanne! I work with a lot of beginners, and it is always tricky to decide how much to tell them. You want to set them up with good habits, but there is always so much more to know and learn to make even something simple better. I have started a lot of people with the knitted CO and once they have confidence with garter stitch and complete a scarf, I'll show them LTCO. I'm subscribed and enjoy the lessons! I was going to go through at least Level 1 of the Master Hand Knitting course, which is I think how I found you. I got so busy with working and all of that I never got it going. Someday maybe!
