Hallelujah - Karsh Kale feat Shilpa Rao, Coke Studio @ MTV Season 2

- A reworking of Leonard Cohen's classic song by the same name, Karsh's version is about the pain and glory of love. For this version, he enlists guitarist Warren Mendonsa's songwriting skills and incorporates the instrumental portion of Warren's 'Ode to a Sunny Day' which seemed to thematically match the mood of 'Halleluiah'.
Shilpa Rao comes in on the Hindusthani bits with echoes of 'Jhoola', a song she grew up on. The beautiful song is marked by an epic guitar solo by Warren.

Lyrics:
I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah !
jhoola kinne daara re amariya
jhoola kinne daara re amariya
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah !
jhoola kinne daara re amariya
jhoola kinne daara re amariya
jhoole mora saiyan lun main balaiya
jhoole mora saiyan lun main balaiya..
dar mohe laage jiya mora larje
dar mohe laage jiya mora larje
haule haule jhoolna jhoolave more saiyan.. re amaraiya
This is the world that I live in
These are the hands that I've been given
These are the sounds of forgiving
This is the place that I've been sitting
This is the rain I'm standing under
All the lightning and the thunder
These are the lives that are blown assunder
but I remain in wonder
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Jhoola, jhoola
Jhoola, jhoola
This is the world that I live in
These are the hands that I've been given
These are the sounds of forgiving
This is the place that I've been sitting
This is the rain I'm standing under
All the lightning and the thunder !
Meaning:
The Song is a marriage of two different thought streams, both of which are expressions of love and helplessness that one experiences through the journey of life.
The Song starts with the lines from the famous Poem "Hallelujah", written by Leonard Cohen. Originally the poem deals with the dilemma every seeking soul goes through, the dilemma of choices and sacrifices. As, on one hand there is a true calling of every soul ; that is the love of the unknown, while on the other hand there is this enchanting and mesmerizing earthly love. Thus the dilemma! While the soul wants to be free and be ONE with its light source; the strong bonds of life and earthly love, make it tough for seeker to break free.
The poet binds the original poem with intermittent rows of thoughts that innocently wrap up the feelings of a heart madly in love; enjoying its bliss...hoping that the beautiful journey of love never ends, but at the same time scared of its end.
Towards the end The Poet states the fact that, living on earth has its purpose and that is the purpose he is fulfilling. He faces all the challenges that come with being a human and yet hopes for redemption...and the love of The Almighty.
The guitar solo just gave me goose bumps. Even after a billion times of hearing this guy play.
Warren the TRex of a Guitarist. .. . Love You Brother.... Keep Rocking....
Through my toughest days, last phase of my PhD, I rediscovered Leonard Cohen and kept on listening to his poetries and found solace. I think he saved my life. I believe Cohen is immortalised by Karsh, Shilpa's Desh and Warren's ode to a sunny day... I think i listened to this version when i was a undergrad student... I aged, the song didn't and never will.
whoah!! what fusion man..this is just epic..shilpa rao perfectly singing one of my fav songs from umrao jaan...karsh's great vocals and awesome piano sounds from his nord...terrific guitar solo by warren..awesome chorus..these guys have nailed music...hats off!!
loved the guitar solo !
this is a very beautiful song
why is warren mendonsa's name not mentioned in tittle!!! such insolence!!
Yeah I think that's MAJOR insult. I don't think he cares though.
souvik bhattacharya Its mentioned in the about video section under composed and produced...:)
Ajay Ramaseshan I know. But it's HIS song. It deserves title.
souvik bhattacharya it's actually Karsh Kale's song. Warren is a part of the Karsh Kale Collective.
They have given him due credits, but since it's Karsh Kale's song, no other artist can get the title credit.
Or Leonard Cohen, for that matter.
but love the original more any time.. Ode to sunny day..
Goosebumps... all the freaking way!!! Brilliant!
Warren Mendoza...not a word..keep strumming Sir...\m/
super super no words to say
Jeff Beck's influence pouring heavily into the guitar's tone
ahaa this is sangeet , shuddh sangeet
excellent!
thats the first thought which came when she start singin!...surprising that they did not catch this!
Name it hallelujah-Amraiyya-saiyya..!! Awesome... :)
Blackstratblues with white strat :D
thank you for noticing that
Warren + Karsh has to be a win. Has to.
It is not off. Listen to the bass note when she starts with jhoola.
kahin door pe leonard cohen ne ek dard bhari karvat li abhi-abhi apni kabarr mein......
How dare you not mention Warren Mendonsa in the title!
Is it in 12/8??
This is one of the things that should NEVER ever happen again.
This song gives me chills, don't get me wrong. And I'm a HUGE fan of Shilpa Rao, favorite singer hands down. But, is it just me, or does the combination just not work? It's like her part is purposely written off key, either that or her melody just does not mesh with the 'Hallelujah' part of the song. I've really tried to get into these Coke Studios, but at the end of the day all the songs are really wierdly written, though nicely performed by brilliant (Trivedi, Karsh, Salim, Kailash) musicians.
Definitely Himesh! hahahahaha!
She's just gone into a different raaga and comes back. She's not off. She's friggin pitch perfect.
Diffrent scales. But it sounds off because she's not singing the same notes as the western major scale. So it is off key.
Definitely sounds off and kinda ruins the beauty of hallelujah
@@samuelstephen3416 bollocks.. she is pitch perfect
@@mayanklal2981 clean your ears sometime
@@neobeinghuman you're tone deaf. But lemme make it simple so that you're law intellect can understand.
1. This song is sung on the western major scale of D. Both hallelujah and Ode to a sunny don't have any notes that are outside the major scale, which is surprising cause there are no 'blue notes' in the instrumental section despite it being a bleusey song, by a band named blackstrat blues.
2. The Indian scales do not follow the western major scale, they have notes that are "outside the confines of the major scale" and that dissonance is the notes she's singing.
With that being said, she is on key, but some parts especially when she first starts does sound off with the chord changes because, she's not singing the notes in the major scale. But that dissonance is what gives the song it's quality. I'm not here dissing this wonderful peice, I'm just making an observation as a music lover, musician and producer.
3:02 This is it!
If you came here for this, check out the real deal Ode to a Sunny Day. This 2.5 minutes solo is the foreplay to that 10 minutes eargasm.
Absolutely
6.15 is what gave me the feeling of Indian..
Best Guitar Solo ever played on Indian MTV :P
This version actually grows on you
I didn't like it much when I first listened to it
But somehow it feels good.
Give the goddamn credit to Warren
tears and goosebumps again every time I listen...heavenly feeling
I skipped the vocals just to hear the guitar solo first. To each his own.
Go and listen to "ode to sunny day" by warren mendosa.. That is whete that part is taken from
Totally agree man...
The actual song's name is "Ode to a Sunny Day"... by Warren Mendonsa (the guy who was playing the guitar solo)... :)
I love many other versions of Hallelujah composed by Leonard Cohen, to me the best one is sung by Rufus Wainwright. This composition is just another interpretation of the song. Warren's beautiful guitar and Prasanna ji's soulful bansuri took it to a different level, love this rendition.
The desh raga she sang in this masterpiece is a whole different level ❤️
Even though our brain interprets it as off key Its musically correct. She is a musical genius.
Hallelujah - Karsh Kale and Warren Mendonsa feat Shilpa Rao,
Hands down , one of the greatest composition of the whole Coke Studio - India and Pakistan. Karsh Kale & Warren Mandonsa!
Watched this when it came out. Thought it would hit a million + views... . Such a beautiful rendition of the song !
karsh kale is a genius, this arrangement works incredibly well..
This arrangement is by Warren Mendosa- Ode to a sunny day 🙂
Everything was good and all but then comes Warren with he's guitar solo and goes to a whole different realm that's when you realize he is class apart... With all due respect this version is good but Ode to a Sunny Day is a masterpiece
The world has enough K.D, Jeff and Rufus covers and after a while one gets jaded. But tailoring a set of words to another brilliant instrumental ( Ode to...) and weaving an absolutely beautiful melody overlaid with a subtle hint of the old pentatonics, now that is music. To all who wish this was a derivative cover of the others, better an original blunder than a borrowed fix. ( Not implied in any way that this cover was a blunder)
Not all covers work. And this is one of them. Period. Its a song that has always left its listeners with goosebumps. This one didn't. Its.... just not the version I would find myself listening to with tears in my heart.
GirlOfFire01 To each his own, I guess.
+GirlOfFire01 you will not understand the beauty of this as soon as you said guitar was loud. That Guitar solo is enough for Musicians to be in happy tears no words or vocals are important. But otherwise I found the song not so great so no complains on the song issues.
+Navneet Kash Please - I dont need someone to tell me what I find beautiful or not. I am quite aware of my preferences. And I personally dont find this rendition 'great' enough to bring me to tears.
for me the jeff buckley's version will be the one always...cant beat it
I normally don't like the overblown way this song is usually performed but this version is truly beautiful
Had he not mentioned Warren's Ode to Sunny Day in the description andyou posted the same,I'd go with you. If people like this song it is possibly because ofhow the lyrics and music have combined to give this output. The 'Jhoolas' and 'Hallelujahs' are probably what have made this song a hit! If you like 'Ode to Sunny Day' better, feel free to express it, but not criticize those who like this better. Well, to me I just think you are one big Show Off who claims to know more about music than others
Karsh Kale's voice is sublime. Also the brilliant ode to a sunny day...Warren is the man.
Damnnn 8 years already!!
I still remembering listening to this like a child on MTV at Saturday 7pm! Those Days :')
adored really.....at first I did not feel any emotion but today it IS different. It IS Good to love loving 😄
Amazingly beautiful. Each vocalist and each instrument. Just beautiful ❤️
You Destroyed the Original Classic Song's Melody 😏
Dislikers Listen To Bieber!
Karsh Kale & Warren Mendonsa FTW :D
thank you god for this love and music.. Thank you !!!!!
Best guitar player of our country............
well done! Karsh Shilpa and Co. Maintains the emotion of the original. Those being "harsh on karsh" may stay listening to the original. Art is about freedom.
Disappointing.. You destroyed the real soul of that music.. I am not a fan of singing the song in the original tune but i try not to distroy it.. Am really sad to hear it... BUT I loved the guitar portion...
love how the flute just rides into the acoustic guitar sounds in the beginning. The vocals are just perfect. Guitar solo's got much soul n control... too good. And to all those who think Shilpa Rao's voice is off when she enters, you must be TONE DEAF. Haven't u heard of blue note or that brown note? GREAT FUSION work. REFRESHING !
Atleast mention Warren Mendonsa on the Video title instead of Karsh Kale.
He deserve his name there.
The entire music outline is based on "ODE to a sunny day" by Blackstratblues.
Even the description doesn't do justice to him.
my friend....the original is not by Buckley....its by Leonard Cohen
wow the female rendition of the hindi was amazing and the male singers version wqs very fifferent.
The guitar solo was amazing.. the Original song is about 10 minutes long .. Warren is a guitar god !! Karsh has made an amazing song even better..
You've ruined the song hallelujah completely. It's a sad song with the essence of pure mellow which should be portrayed in any rendition of this song. It's a dark song which is filled with gloom. What you guys did is making it a love song and totally altered the true meaning of the song.
Vocals and solos are all great but they don't fit with this particular song.
I just heard this version a few weeks ago. What do you think? I’m enthralled, love it!
Basically came to watch Kale and Mendosa - the Hindi lyrics and the female vocalist seemed forced and botched it up a little for me, but everything else on point as always.
master piece of Warren mendosa. ..
you r d inspiration of many musician specially guitarist ...
Magnifica, commovente e sublime interpretazione....Grazie.
Can I marry your voice, Shilpa?
This guitar solo is something which hasn't been topped by anything made in India yet
lol, you're right that shes not off. but not about the sharp note thing.
but a sharp note dusnt always necessary feel off. infact, most of the notes shes singing might be sharp notes.
what she dus there is shes singing a note off the scale. shes adding a chromatic touch. any note out of the corresponding scale feels off. it myt be sharp, myt not be sharp, myt just be a natural note.
It Shouldn't be. Especially since they film the show three times and edit all three takes for final take.
this song helps me a lot♥️...still coming back to it
Warren.... India has some great guitarists .These guys need more recognition
well.. at 1st it was ruining it for me as well.. but the more I listen to it.. I think it gives it that little zing .. it's probably a third minor over the major .. and Karsh probably wanted to show off a bit..
grateful job waran mendos this is my favourite guitar solo hats of you after slash November rain
This song is a warm hug to soul 🥺🌃✨
Mr kale and Ms Rao..hard word puttin to promote other culture but Indian...
Bloody brilliant that! can listen to this on repeat !
Is seem like its off... but maybe that's the way its in the original version..... may be the chordwork could be altered os fit in the 'odd note'
Simply amazing ❤️ 🙏🏼
Superb! What a song! Loved it!
I think this episode's the best one so far!
Who the heck in the world dislikes a solo, esp like these...Seriously man,u need to get a life !!! Cheers anyways.
Vous êtes inspiré par la grâce de Dieu Karsh ! J'adore ce que vous faîtes, de la très belle musique ! Dieu vous garde ! (Didier D'Agostino French drummer composer and Brother + monastic "sancte Benedict //i have play drums with Rhoda Scott (the best jazz organist in the world ) mes amitiés spirituelles Karsh !
Indeed I agree with you!! They wouldnt air it , if they hadn't rehearsed it that way!! Lovely rendition!! What hidden talent!!
The guitar world is divided betweeen shread and no-shred. Blckstratblues just converted a shredder
Shilpa Rao
Why I heard the Jeff Buckley version I think that's the sole reason I don't like this song
I fail to understand how Shilpa Rao screwed up her vocals all throughout the start of the song, and struggled to find the right scale with little success.
Thank god she got it right after Warren's solo.
Do you have any understanding of music at all?!
Wow!! warren mendoza is the most amazing guitarist in india! Listened to him around 10 years back!! and still smitten by his music!! nice work shilpa too :)
Just read theough the comment section, and see what people talk about the guitar solo by Warren aka @blackstrateblues. Isn't it criminal not to put his name in the title? This song belongs to Karsh and Warren, as it includes a Blackstratblues original (Ode to a Sunny Day). Karsh's voice sounds incredible. Very Sting like.
so u think u have knowldge of music....first tell me how many ragas...???
Warren u have my respects 🤘
dats a sharp note dat shes singin, shes nt off but it feels off, dats thr creativity :)
Epic! One of the best versions of this song around... seamless travel between two songs, never seemed two different ... and Shilpas Jhoola is abs fine, its just that we are so used to traditional 135 harmonies that it might throw you off when coming from hallelujah to Jhoolah , but its abs fine and that's why its good composition :-).. this episode is so good to hear after the utterly let down one from EL. ...
.
Have you heard of an invention called the ear bud? Yes you need a few.
Y coke studio has to have two singers all the time? it doesn't work every time.... pls do some justice to songs like Hallelujah.... pls guys dont do the jamming for the crist sake...
True the song is an unbelievably good one. I don't think the setup with setup with lady did justice to the song.
the guitar solo didnt have to be so long, i had to forward it.. what is benny dayal doing as backup singer? entire hallelujah vocal melody was changed. this song is a massive piece of lol.
oH tHe gUiTaR sOlO DiDnT hAvE tO bE ThAt lOnG.
It was the only good part other than the flute in the entire thing
Warren should've played it on a black strat
Brilliant. Seriously. Its taken me a few times to listen to this and I can now appreciate the complexities and layers of this song. So proud of you Karsh.
This song should have been instrumental! Totally spoiled the melody with those vocals
Haha, listen to "Ode to a sunny day" and "Hallelujah" separately.
ruined the original classic
leonard cochen will definitely commit suicide if he listens to this version......i dont understand what you ppl wanted to prove,, try to do your own compositions guys.....you cant steal Gods glory.
3:02 the real deal starts.. WARREN MENDONSA the guitar god.. I've listened to the lead more than I can imagine.. just WOW
