“To Be Black WITHOUT the burden of America…” Soooo profound! I felt that! I will nibble on that for many years to come Really awesome interview. Thank you! 🙏🏾❤️
I love her speaking voice. I love that she can be both soft and strong in how she expresses herself. If I had money, I would beg her to be my mentor. She is a masterful singer, producer and artist. Great interview. Thank you!!❤❤❤
Me too. I think she's the GOAT, personally lol. I can't name one fee-male singer (or male, except Stevie Wonder/Brian McKnight) who can outsing her when it comes to vocal ability, range, riffing, musicianship. Sure, some can sing "louder," but that chit impresses "young" ears. Lalah is the only person I've ever hear sing an Anita Baker and Sade song BETTER than THEY did it. I mean, damn lol.
There are so many elements in her Dad's voice that can't be recreated. I wish that people would stop and just enjoy his music! She is also one of a kind! JUST LIKE HER DAD!
I feel the same. I'm like that with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, MJ, Prince, and Sade. Leave their chit alone. (Except Lalah. She can actually remake anything and make that chit sound dope, even better than the original. And again, I HATE when people touch these artists songs. But she can. lol)
The duet with Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack they were not in the studio together. Mr Hathaway shipped the masters to a studio in DC where Ms Flack was still a student at Howard University
“It’s like I sourced It to myself”. These words & expression is what I believe she said initially, we’re about to get deep…. This is soooo deep & dope… Lalah is now Dr Hathaway & she speaks like it…. She’s the consummate Pro on so many levels…& just a pure Joy to watch, listen to, understand & view…. Source….!!!! I thank ya!!!❤🙏🏽👍🏽✌🏽❣️❣️❣️
I've known people that have unfortunately weaponized these agreements to serve their craziness. Sad but true. Despite this those that utilize them for good will thrive.
My absolute favorite Artist of all time. Day One Fan....I thought I couldn't love her more but this interview was just phenomenal. What am amazing spirit!❤❤❤❤❤
I believe she is explaining that the source has given that gift, and that source has an expectation of her good stewardship of it to cultivate it to nourish and influence others. God gives the increase for you to bless others. Just like your show!
[4Agreements: Don't make assumptions.] I absolutely love this conversation. Laylah Hathaway is the standard I strive for musically PLUS her aesthetic and beliefs are so similar to mine. 🥳👏🏼❤️🥳
I grew up in Boston, in Mattapan specifically. I agreed with EVERYTHING they said about what it's like to be there - especially growing up or as a young adult in the 80s & 90s. I left in 2001. I've been back to visit my mother a few times. I wouldn't go back to live there though.
I love you and your music. I love your father and his music. You are so spiritual and I love Vanta Black and your other albums that I have heard. You are indeed blessed. I hope to see you soon in concert. I understand that you have Sourced --it to yourself! You are so beautiful!
26:36-26:44 Was that agreement you weren’t recalling ‘Don’t assume anything’?! I deliberately didn’t google anything to think on my feet too. Thank you for this whole interview Lalah & Toure. Ultra relatable to me in my own bubble of a life.
Lalah's performance of "Love's Holiday" did it for me. She is the #1 Female Vocalist right now!...has been for quite some time. She is in her prime! Let's enjoy her!
Donny was a perfectly balanced singer. I never, ever catch him doing too much or oversinging. He's sensitive and emotional, but he always gives you the right tone. It's always just right, not too much nor too little.
Her father voice was in-between a church & Juck Join with the hole in the wall voice. Her farther voice was a one of a kind. Where I respect her father's voice when he sang a song by a 1960s artist called "Sake Full of Dreams." Love you❤
I love Lalah. This interview was frustrating at times because the interviewer wasn’t listening. He repeated questions & she respectfully stated she had already answered. Then at the end, he tried to argue with her about being “gifted” by acting like he didn’t understand. The plain & simple truth (those of us who know) is that a gifted person can use their gift without all the extra work & still be great. But the extra work combined with a gift (like Lalah) makes one EXTRAORDINARY. Still, an ungifted person can do all the work & be good, maybe even great. But they’ll never be a Lalah or Donny. This guy (pompous ignorance) disputes her gift by suggesting that work & practice are the reasons for her success. Lalah handled him gracefully without taking it personal. ❤
His delivery was pompous. But he was actually complimenting her. If anyone thinks Lalah doesn't work and practice her a$$ off, they are greatly mistaken. Wight people try to say "it's a gift" as a way if discrediting our intelligence and our work ethic. Our problem as BLk folks is many things we think are a "diss" are actually a complement, and vice versa, things we think are a complement are actually a diss. We don't live in this world by ourselves, so it behooves us to understand how we're percieved, good and bad. To be a Blk vvoman/man and be percieved as having an extraordinary work ethic is the highest honor. Jordan is just as gifted as Lalah. But her work ethic is just as maniacal as his. And like him, she's the GOAT!
Lalah’s conversation about Boston’s cultural vibe reminds me of Ann Arbor, in MI…a totally great college, foodstuff city-town and getting called the N-word.
36:18 You all are inspiring me to pick up where I left off in an Octavia Butler book that I had started reading where the protagonist does time travel like this to observe yet does get involved. Thank you, even though I am probably so preaching to the choir here. ; )
I loved this interview, however, it was obvious that Lalah is far more spiritually enlightened and has more depth than her interviewer. He was literally lost in certain places.
I don't think all singers are their own producers, and some singers need producers. Not to sing, but to objectively and commercially make A RECORD. There are astronomical singers that are horrible at recording, because of lack of discipline, taste, etc. And there are average singers that would sing them under the table in making a record, because they know their limitations and how to convey emotions to enhance the recording without overkill..
Toure not accepting that she identifies her gift as a gift as she said. Stop it! I love her response.
I love me some Lalah Hathaway 🤎
“To Be Black WITHOUT the burden of America…” Soooo profound! I felt that! I will nibble on that for many years to come Really awesome interview. Thank you! 🙏🏾❤️
In South Africa of all places? I guess. Then again, she said it was a delusion.
I love her speaking voice. I love that she can be both soft and strong in how she expresses herself. If I had money, I would beg her to be my mentor. She is a masterful singer, producer and artist. Great interview. Thank you!!❤❤❤
Of all the current female singers Lalah Hathaway has got to be one of my favorite
Me too. I think she's the GOAT, personally lol. One of the finest singers of her generation
….Of all time…👍🏽❣️
The 4 Agreements:
Be Impeccable With Your Word.
Don't Take Anything Personally.
Don't Make Assumptions.
Always Do Your Best.

She's touring with Jubu Smith now! That's a match made in heaven! Jubu actually does sing like her dad
I am happy Lalah new album had wonderful reviews, its a great album, i could listen to her speak all day ❤
“It’s like I sourced It to myself”. These words & expression is what I believe she said initially, we’re about to get deep…. This is soooo deep & dope…

I have the four agreements, I need to re-read, and practice them. She's spot on with her saying "Your things don't have anything to do with me."
Great great read!! And I forget the 4th one too 😊
I've known people that have unfortunately weaponized these agreements to serve their craziness. Sad but true. Despite this those that utilize them for good will thrive.
I have a whole new respect for this young lady after watching this interview.... respect✊🏾✊🏾
Genius is in her DNA. A beautiful spirit and Funny too.😀
My absolute favorite Artist of all time. Day One Fan....I thought I couldn't love her more but this interview was just phenomenal. What am amazing spirit!❤❤❤❤❤

This is reflective of all of us with the gift of life & living I think, or don’t ya think(?)
Good point 👍🏽❣️
I Love this conversation between them. Its definitely not an interview to Me & that's what makes it Amazing.
I have described Donny Hathaway‘s voice using almost the exact words that Lalah used, right down to the indescribable parts.☺️
I luv this interview!!!
This is BLACKTASTIQUE!!!
Extremely beautiful and talented. I enjoy listening to her. She and MC LYTE could be sisters.
Phenomenal interview! The conversation was enlightening! Thank you
[4Agreements: Don't make assumptions.] I absolutely love this conversation. Laylah Hathaway is the standard I strive for musically PLUS her aesthetic and beliefs are so similar to mine. 🥳👏🏼❤️🥳

Nobody can sing like Donny❤ one of a kind..❤
Donnie was amazing

I LOVE great dialogue. This was that
I love you and your music. I love your father and his music. You are so spiritual and I love Vanta Black and your other albums that I have heard. You are indeed blessed. I hope to see you soon in concert. I understand that you have Sourced --it to yourself! You are so beautiful!
THE GRAND DAME: FOR SOME, THIS IS TRULY A LEARNING EXPERIENCE, THANK YOU.

Such a great interview!! Bravo!!! Direct from the source.
This woman is my favorite. On so many levels.
Two of my favorite friends in my head. Awesome conversation.
Donny was a perfectly balanced singer. I never, ever catch him doing too much or oversinging. He's sensitive and emotional, but he always gives you the right tone. It's always just right, not too much nor too little.
I love Lita half the way songs or songs someone gonna make me cry and it’s touching

Thank you. Toure sometimes.
She is so incredible
I love the Toure show this is my first time watching this wow
REAL TALK!!!!!
Lalah’s conversation about Boston’s cultural vibe reminds me of Ann Arbor, in MI…a totally great college, foodstuff city-town and getting called the N-word.
TOURE I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SHOW❤IT'S THE BEST IM SUBSCRIBING 😊
That's good you connect with your.audience🎉🎉❤
I hear Donny Hathaway in Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross.
You mean you hear Stevie in Donny Hathaway and Luther
I've heard each one of them.
Like father, like daughter "so smoothe"❤❤❤
36:18 You all are inspiring me to pick up where I left off in an Octavia Butler book that I had started reading where the protagonist does time travel like this to observe yet does get involved. Thank you, even though I am probably so preaching to the choir here. ; )
Gratitude
(44:52) "...the bar is low..." have to admire her willingness to call it...
I loved this interview, however, it was obvious that Lalah is far more spiritually enlightened and has more depth than her interviewer. He was literally lost in certain places.
Flow state - In The Zone
The movie soul, with Jamie Foxx is a great example of thisflow state.
CTA -CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY❤❤
Don't make assumptions. Definitely easier said than done.
I've also been told the tone of my voice is too dark by similar people 😒
❤❤❤❤❤l

Four Agreements. Must read.
You tell by the way he asking questions that he does not believe in God giving gifts.
Bruh needs to stop hiding statements behind his questions. Ask genuine questions. Don't "Trojan Horse" your opinion into them. That's amateurish AF.
What's up with the creepy music at the beginning? Other than that you been missed Touré
Black SA have their own colonizer experience. They probably feel similarly in America.
He's starting to sound just like Dick Cavett.
@ 45:35 A DIVINING 🖤
