There are 3 exceptionally soulful British singers from the late sixties into the seventies and beyond: Paul Rogers, originally of Free, later of Bad Company and then solo; Terry Reid (on YT find Terry Reid at Glastonbury Fair singing "Dean", more on that in a minute: Steve Marriott, originally of The Small Faces, then Humble Pie, and then solo. Now back to Terry Reid. The performance of "Dean" is quite accidentally genius. The band, as can be seen on the video are stoned, passing around a large joint that ends up with the drummer. The band know they are going to play, "Dean", but being stoned it sort of falls together by accident, which turns out to be a moment of great good fortune, because it sounds like a work of genius. I'm sure this was never repeated at any of their other gigs. Reid has a superb voice and anything he sings sounds great. The same applies to Paul Rogers.

Now try the Small Faces and the Spencer Davis group and Stevie Winwood if you want to really understand the UK in the 1960's. Forget the Beatles and the Stones.

I had their double LP "Rockin the Filmore" in 1971 and "Smoking" in 72. Lost track after that. Their live version of Dr John's "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" is probably my favorite. Glad you did this band. I never heard this song until a few years ago though.

I was born in 1951 and have had the pleasure of experiencing rock and roll from it's very beginnings to today's offerings.
Along the way I also learned to appreciate all kinds of other musical genres. What a long strange trip it's been.
For a softer side of Humble Pie check out their acoustic version of "For Your Love"

I've fortunate to see a number of great musicians and bands. Among them were Uriah Heap, Sly and the Family Stone, Santana, Creedence, The Dead, 3 Dog Night, Little Feat, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Jethro Tull, Flatt & Scruggs, Peter-Paul & Mary, saw Jimi Hendrix in Hawaii on his Rainbow Bridge tour and BB King at the opera house in Antwerp Belgium.
A band you might want to check out is Savor Brown. Hellbound Train is a favorite though Tell Mama really rocks.

Since Marriott was killed in a fire at his home he was 44.
    Died 20 April 1991 (aged 44)
    Arkesden, Essex, England.
Shortly after leaving Small Faces, Marriott joined the newly formed rock band Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, that's him on the far end. No it's the middle, difficult to see with the hair, tbh.
In 1989, Marriott and Clem Clempson recorded the song as a jingle for Nescafé coffee's new product - Blend 37. They won a Gold Medal Award for the top Commercial 1989.
"Whispering Bob" Harris was the presenter of the old grey whistle test. ogwt

@@playitagainsue Here is a link to the Nescafe commercial. Isn't it amazing that you can still watch a coffee commercial from 1989!! According to Steve's bio, He was hired to make this commercial, but didn't realize that Clem had been hired also. They hadn't seen each other in years, and had a nice reunion. Then Steve walked into the studio, with no rehersal, and recorded this amazing vocal in ONE TAKE. Then walked out with a check for $11,000 (if I remember correctly)
      th-cam.com/video/RcppZbspzGY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=r0szGc9iU-k-q3T3 Black coffee/Nescafe

First time listener here. Had to watch when I saw that you were featuring my absolute favorite rock hero - Steve Marriott. He was considered one of the greatest voices in blues /soul/rock by such peers as Robert Plant, Roger Daltry, David Bowie and many more. Both Jimmy Page (Zeppelin) and Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)'s first choice for the bands they were forming was Steve, but he turned them down and formed Humble Pie. They have some great rocker's like "30 Day's in the Hole" & "I Don't Need No Dr", but my personal favorites are two album deep cuts :
"I Wonder" very bluesy with a weeping guitar solo and Steve's voice sounds like he's bleeding
"I Know You're So Good For Me" a duet with bassist Greg Ridley. A beautiful love song that sounds almost gospel.

Impressive stuff ! .. And yes, I'm a huge Steve Marrott fan too .. But for me, it's the work that he did with the Small Faces that I will always cherish .. For a song of theirs that really shows off his voice, as well as being a bonafide masterpiece of music, you just have to check out "Tin Soldier" .. There's a video with 16 million views that is the best one to watch .. Cheers, Wayne

@wayne_twentyfive That is a fantastic song! His voice is great. I love how he is singing a little more softly in parts and then gets into the gritty soulful bits. It has a fantastic 1960s rock sort of psychedelic feel to it. I love watching him in this video as well. He has some great moves and swagger. The back up singer is good too...nice addition to the song..amazing song. Thanks Wayne 😊💜🧡

@playitagainsue Glad you enjoyed it, Sue .. I thought it would appeal to you 😊 .. And yes, everything you said about it is true .. BTW - The lady doing the backing vocals is American soul singer P.P. Arnold, who started as an Ike & Tina Turner "Ike-ette", then had a successful solo career, mainly in the UK .. She toured with the Small Faces at one point, and did guest vocals on a few songs.

If you have an interest in further exploring Steve Marriott, you really should listen to his first band - SMALL FACES. They were only together for about 3 years, and took Europe by storm, but sadly were not as well known in the US. Their early R&B songs will blow your mind as Steve channels Otis Redding, James Brown and all the other black soul singers of that era. Later they explored lots of styles like psychedelic pop, whimsical, music hall, soul and rock. They made one of the first concept albums - "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake " - which was just genius. These two songs might be a good place to start:
"Tin Soldier" their most popular along with "Itchicoo Park" which is the only song to be released in the US
"You Need Lovin" early R&B If you Love Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love, you will see where they got it.
Thank you. I have subscribed and hope to hear more of the Pie and hopefully Small Faces and then maybe some of Steve's later solo work. BTW the reason for the "Artful Dodger" remark by the host is because Steve started his career at aged 13 playing the Dodger in the stage production of "Oliver". He was a total charmer - RIP
    💔

@@playitagainsue Steve , while he was in Small Faces was highly acclaimed by his peers as the greatest white soul/rock singer in Great Britain. Here's a quote from Mick Jagger:
"Steve could sing like a pixie with the sweetest pipes. Could have led little children over a clifff with that side of his voice. And then he could bray like a donkey, gale force, and the power of his voice would turn your skin to ice!"
Small Faces were very special - talented, creative and innovative, always looking for new sounds. They are my favorite band - (behind the Beatles). It's a shame that most in the US only know Itchicoo Park - a cute psychedelic pop song - this song is not indicative to the red hot raving band they were, especially live. More please, from the way you talk, I think you could become a fan, too 🤩

@@playitagainsue Sadly, due to several problems, SF's were not able to come to the US when all the other "British Invasion" bands came over. If they had come, I'm sure they would have been as well known as the Who, Kinks, Animals, etc.
Here's a "fun fact" for you : When Jimi Hendrix was preparing to return to the US after finding success in Great Briton, he requested Small Faces tour with him as his opening act. Jimi loved the SF's - he called them "cool littlte cats" LOL!

The wonderful and much missed Stevie. Some of the looks between the girls and Steve might just be because he and Clydie King, the singer on the right of the girls were having a little thing at the time. He did like the ladies, but check out the Small faces, such a great 60s Brit Mod band. While the Who were not Mods originally, but were invented by one of there early managers, the Small Faces were the real deal.
