It remains a classic performance 50 years later. I saw this when it was first shown on the BBC, it blew me away then and it still does. Humble Pie were such a great act.
The back up singers called themselves the "Blackberries", and were (from left to right) - Billie Barnum, Vanetta Fields, and Clydie King. All were very experienced backup singers who had been Ikettes and Raylette's. Steve loved the idea of having backing singers who had performed with his heroes. Venetta and Clydie also backed up many other artists of that era, so it's possible Linda Ronstadt might have been one. Steve absolutely loved and respected the "chicks" (as he called them), and they loved him back. Vanetta wrote that when she first met Steve, he got on his knee and kissed her hand. She said "he was outlandish, but we loved him!" According to Steve's wife Jenny, around this time, Steve and Clydie were having a "thing". Steve also had an affair with PP Arnold while she sang back up for him on Tin Soldier. PP (Pat) said Steve was the only white boy she dated who didn't try to hide it and even took her home to meet his mother - "he was that real" and a sweetheart... Sorry to gossip, but since they are all gone now (sadly), I guess it doesn't matter. RIP Steve, Clydie & Vanetta
Myself and my then girlfriend sat with Venetta Field in 1990 at Terranorra Country club in the Northern rivers of New South Wales. Venetta was very courteous and told me she sang wirh Ike and Tina Turner.
@@craigalden9416 I am very happy to stand corrected. I thought I remembered hearing that she had passed on. Bless you Vanetta and thank you for all the great music you contributed to.
Watching your reactions to Steve Marriot's BEST performance is pure joy to me. Jamel and friends, your appreciation for the blues and for the power and depth of his voice gives me hope that Humble Pie's music will never lose its appeal. I met him 2 nights in his hotel rooms in 1972 when he was touring the Midwest. My friend at school had been a DJ in St. Louis while in high school and had interviewed him on the air - LIVE. My friend insisted that three of us go see Humble Pie's concerts during that week - a short drive from our university to Louisville, Cincinatti and St. Louis. Steve Marriott was as engaging in person as he was mesmerizing on stage. Looking back over these 50 years and hearing his voice, I realize that I have always measured every blues musician against Marriott. Very few musicians have ever been his equal in terms of guitar magic, harmonica finesse, and his raw and emotional voice. You noticed it too. It is my hope that you will continue to remember his music and come back to it again time after time.
Venetta Fields is one of the three wonderful backing singers, The Blackberries. She was born in Buffalo, and is now an Australian Citizen. She lives on the Gold Coast, Queensland. She is one of our best known singers, who backed John Farnham for lots of years. Love her voice ❤❤❤
This man has soul and grit. I love how he taps into his influences and peers, then just projects it perfectly. My skin is white but my soul is black! Yep, I’m the same way. Great reactions guys. I’m a fan of yours now.
Black coffee ☕️ and Humble Pie 🥧 TASTEE AS IT GETS!! Steve could say "my skin is white but my soul is black" without ANY backlash. No doubt-just checkout the Sistas-Blackberries singing with him. Love this, and HUMBLE PIE!!! "That's where its at!"
It was only a couple of years ago that I found out that this is an Ike & Tina song. The original and the Humble Pie cover are both amazing. Steve Marriott was an amazing musician. I'm sad I never had the chance to see him perform.
I met him one time and has a little conversation with him. He was a little vulcan. Funny story, he want a beer, but his wife is always behind him like a Nanny.🤗
I recently read Led Zeppelin wanted Steve as the lead vocalist but he said no as he was involved with other projects. Robert Plant who became Zeps lead vocalist was inspired by Steve Marriott’s vocal talents.
I just heard this for the first time a couple of days ago. The lead singer and the guitar immediately made me think of Plant and Paige. This is probably the most Zeppelin-esque song I've ever heard. It turns out Steve's band Small Faces opened for Zeppelin and the Zep stole Whole Lotta Love and the singing style from Steve.
Jerry Shirley (drummer) tells a funny story about how when they played this show in SanAntonio, Steve (who hadn't slept in days) passed out in the hotel bar and had to be carried up to his room. Come show time - no Steve, so they broke down his door and he was still totally passed out. Jerry had to pick him up and throw him in the shower to wake him up, and Steve went on stage about 1/2 hr later and absolutely KILLED. Jerry said Steve was a total showman who ALWAYS gave 100%, even when he wasn't feeling up to it. - Bless him. Wish I could have seen them live...
Oh, I loved humble pie. I still have the album smokin. I hope you listen to several of their songs one of them 30 days in a hole is great also. It was glorious that British bands loved the R&B sound, and kept that tradition going.
Been listening to Stevie since 1970, couldn't believe what was coming out of this little British dude's mouth when I first heard him in Humble Pie. He is a legend that few people ever heard of, such a shame.
A true 'soul' voice. Humble Pie were great as were the Small Faces before them. Most things to do with Steve Marriot were excellent. Energy, musicality, timing, presence...they had the lot those guys and girls. Perhaps the best thing was they way they were always enjoying it so much when they performed
My fave bands in chronological order: The Beatles, Led Zep, Humble Pie, and SRV. I could listen to a mix of nothing but their music for the rest of my life and be quite happy.
When you listen to the blues If you don’t listen and watch it live There’s no comparison because when you watch people perform live it just makes you feel the music that much more I got hooked on the blues when I was 14 years old and now I’m 53 years young and I love the blues probably more now than I ever have I was at a party in 1984 and someone put a Muddy Waters Album on and the rest is history I freaking love the blues It just gets in your soul and I can’t get enough I love all blues music and it doesn’t matter if it’s Muddy Waters,BB King,Albert King or SRV The blues is for every race of people and I love all kinds of music from Rockin roll to Rap,blues, country and gospel it doesn’t matter to me I just love music and to see it live is a whole different experience I was in Daytona Beach in 1987 and watched SRV and he blew my mind This man gave everything he had every time he walked on stage and to me he’s the best guitar player that has ever played one When you have BB King and Eric Clapton tell you that SRV was so special and that it will be a long time before you see anyone that plays like SRV To hear that from those to great musicians What else can you say You don’t have to say anything Just sit back and enjoy and take it all in I always think of all the great music we missed out on when the good lord said it was time for SRV to say goodbye To one of the very best to ever do We love ya SRV and man I sure do miss you so much Rest In Peace to a legend
Steve Marriott RIP was a force of nature. You should watch the video when he was with Small Faces before this in the mid 60’s’ Little Tin Soldier’ with backing from PP Arnold!
I remember when I was young and discovered Humble Pie my friends were like.....what's this stuff you listening to? I introduced them to the sound and it quickly spread amongst most my schoolmates. They were just awesome.
hey the first time i seen Donna Summers singing i was 7 i thought this women was beautiful, my dad told me to move away from in front of the tv. I'm white many of the singers from back in the day had me hooked on their voices and the music. gladys night aretha franklin so many, great stuff!!
If you can, try and watch a video of Steve Marriott live in concert, shortly before his death, doing a Blues song called "Five Long Years." It was absolutely an unbelievable performance, both vocally, and musically, on the guitar. I knew he was an excellent guitarist, but this performance was one of the best I've ever seen. Please at least check it out. You will be glad you did. Thanks fellas
My best friend was black from Philly, we listened to this 100 times, went to see Humble Pie 1970, friend was shocked he thought lead singer was black 😂😂😂
Humble Pie: Wikipedia, The original line-up featured lead vocalist and guitarist Steve Marriott from Small Faces, vocalist and guitarist Peter Frampton from the Herd, former Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley and a 17-year-old drummer, Jerry Shirley, from the Apostolic Intervention.
What a tragic loss to all those who love great rock and soul music that Stevie Marriott died in a house fire back in the '80's (I think). Humble Pie were a great rock band and much of their stuff is still available on You Tube, and I believe they're still performing. God bless 'em.
The great P.P. Arnold had a wonderful vocal influence on Steve Marriott and he truly is one of my all-time fave musicians and one of the best vocalists in the history of rock 'n' roll music.
Yes Steve Marriott really had a great voice. A small thin guy just a little over 5 feet. Unfortunately, he didn't quite get the success and appreciation he so well deserved. Died too soon just a little over 40 years.
Unfortunately, Peter left them in 1971 for his solo gig because of friction with the singer, Steve Marriott. He was replaced by the man you see. David Clempson.
@@pugowner1347 Kinda figured that, but couldn’t tell and didn’t google to figure it out. Saw them open for someone (early to mid 80’s) but can’t remember who, getting old sucks. Thx Pug
Jamel, you are absolutely right about Clydie King being the same singer who was on Ronstadt's "You're No Good." She was terrific! Allegedly, Bob Dylan was secretly married to Clydie for a time and she bore two children by him.
Now listen to Steve Marriot in The Small Faces, which was his former band. I suggest Tin Soldier. Steve had been a child actor and played the Artful Dodger in the musical Oliver! in London. But in his teens he decided he wanted to become a pop star instead, and he did!
I have a request that you would play Humble Pie's "I Wonder" from the "Smokin'" album. It is my favorite blues song in the whole wide world and that particular recording of it is the best musical recording of it. It will open up another guitarist to you named Clem Clempson.
The 3 twins! Thanks for the laughs. Can see how close y’all are, I love it. Your brothers seem as cool as you! How many other siblings do you have & do you all look alike?
Glad you guys enjoyed that. You should check out The Small Faces track, You Need Lovin'. I had the immense pleasure of meeting Steve in 1987 just after my 19th birthday. It was waiting for a Steve Marriott & The Packet of 3 gig, what a gentleman he was. I met him a few more times after that and shared a few joints. He was cruelly taken from us far too soon. R.I.P Stevie Marriott, the world's most soulful white dude. 🇬🇧 A Brit in Ireland 🇮🇪
As much as you love Steve Marriott, WHY haven't you done more reactions besides Black Coffee & 30 Days in the Hole (although both are classics)???? You have barely scratched the surface of his huge inventory of brilliant performances. Please try something you haven't heard yet. My recommendations: "I Don't Need Not Dr" ( from live at Fillmore) or the totally soulful "I Wonder" from album Smokin. Also, Steve's first band Small Faces was a very hot little band, way ahead of it's time in 1965-68. You did get blown away with Small Faces version of "You Need Lovin" - which Led Zeppelin covered as "Whole Lotta Love". I recommend you try : "Tin Soldier" their most popular song - there is a video from French TV that must not get blocked as MANY other reactors have played it. I'm sure you will love PP Arnold on back up. She's a real beauty... or... "All or Nothing" Kind of Steve's theme song for his life... SF's first #1 hit. I doubt any of these songs will get blocked as long as you stay away from the "Beat Club" videos. Please play more Marriott
Peter Frampton had left the group by the time of this performance, the replacement guitarist is Clem Clempson. This track 'Black Coffee' is on Humble Pie's double album called 'Eat It.'
Wait till you hear the small faces. Steve Marriott is the best. Real deal. And you’re spot on about seeing stuff live catching a new vibe from the “essence of performance” thumbs up.
So true - just listen to a Small Faces track ‘You Need Loving’ from their early years - 😊 among Stevie Marriott influences were Booker T, James Brown and Otis Redding
1:64 A student told their singing Teacher, "I can't sing. guess I don't have the talent." The teacher responded, "Nonsense! Just pick a song that you really feel."
when he mentions Steve Marriot being the 'definitive artful dodger' he is referring to Steve's first role as a youngster doing Oliver Twist play. You realise his introduction is the same person of his comments as a young man with the big boofy hair and bucky teeth at the end of the video Vanetta fields is the middle backing singer, she would have some stories to tell, look her up in biography, so many artists as a backing singer and ended up in Australia with a more long standing relationship with the great John Farnham, great singer great voice would love to see an in depth interview of her life as a Child in america and to who and how she worked with so many well known estrablished artist and to her final stage in Australia. She is must get for interviewing in to , even just for Music History. Amazing women. Please do it Vanetta!

Wait till you hear the small faces. Steve Marriott is the best. Real deal. And you’re spot on about seeing stuff live catching a new vibe from the “essence of performance” thumbs up.
There’s appreciation then there is FEELING it….
This dude reminds me of Robert Plant, I wonder if he ever did some soul/blues songs like this as his voice certainly suits it. 😎👍✌
So true - just listen to a Small Faces track ‘You Need Loving’ from their early years - 😊 among Stevie Marriott influences were Booker T, James Brown and Otis Redding
Marriot was the first choice for Led Zep.
Ahhh great to see some Steve Marriott on your channel!
I've heard this man dudes got soul
Love this reaction!!
1:64 A student told their singing Teacher, "I can't sing. guess I don't have the talent."
The teacher responded, "Nonsense! Just pick a song that you really feel."
when he mentions Steve Marriot being the 'definitive artful dodger' he is referring to Steve's first role as a youngster doing Oliver Twist play. You realise his introduction is the same person of his comments as a young man with the big boofy hair and bucky teeth at the end of the video
Vanetta fields is the middle backing singer, she would have some stories to tell, look her up in biography, so many artists as a backing singer and ended up in Australia with a more long standing relationship with the great John Farnham, great singer great voice would love to see an in depth interview of her life as a Child in america and to who and how she worked with so many well known estrablished artist and to her final stage in Australia. And yeah, that is where it’s at!
Have y'all listened to Terry Reid?? He's another English guy with KILLER vocals.
You got a blue Humble hoodie on too 😎✌🏽
It's funny another great back up singer to Linda Ronstadt was Emmy Lou Harris which became great in her own right as well
