1934 Kingsbury Chrysler Airflow Light Up Sedan Restoration

  • I purchased this 1934 Kingsbury Chrysler Airflow Light Up Sedan off eBay July of 2020. The wheels were ready to fall off this one, the wind up mechanism did not work, nor did the headlights and tail lights. It was missing the battery retainer otherwise was all there. This one fought me in numerous ways. When I stripped the old coating off the parts, the factory grille dissolved in a matter of seconds, evidently I should not have tried stripping the coating. I ordered a factory one for replacement when it comes in, however to make the video for this weekend I made a custom one just for now. The factory spring clip for the drive assembly snapped during reassembly and I had to improvise with a short spring and push clip. It worked well, however I was still saddened that It was not the correct parts, I will continue to look for a replacement clip to fix this correctly in the future. While reassembling, I missed installing the insulators under the light bulb contactors at first and had to remove and reinstall them after. Other than the slight mishaps, I am extremely thrilled with how this little car works. It drives well, and I love the clicking sound as you wind up the spring. The tail light is my favorite part of this hole car. Thank you for watching!

My son Lucas is 4 and we watch one of your videos every night at bedtime. He was laughing his butt off for a solid 10 minutes over the sheep getting sucked out of the car at the beginning. He gives you a literal thumbs up every time you tap the subscribe on the sand blaster. Thank you for these videos. He now wants to."rescue" toys from the garbage himself, lol
From one of your littlest fans, "Hi! More sheeps please!"

Interesting restoration, it being a wind-up car w/ 3 lights. I didn't put 2 + 2 together for some odd reasons that there was a lit-up taillight because I was trying to figure out what the mechanism on the bottom was for. Nice restoration!!

I'm new in the channel. Great work. I'd prefer you to restore the grill instead to build another one.

I mean it's not just that the table is crowded but that you can't really appreciate all the beautiful work because they're all smooshed together

    Dear "Chip",
    Wonderful work!
If it's allowed here a few ideas/ thoughts from my point of view as a tin plate (clockwork toys) friend (if you like, check my website out - same name as channel):
    1) You should have only polished the "chrome" parts. In the 1930's very often they were only nickel plated. Chroming on toys was very rare, same for gramophone tone arms etc... (but H.M.V./The Gramophone Company - Hayes UK - did !)
    2) VERY often LESS is MORE... Better to hold the max. of the original parts possible, for example - the cable, it's straight copper and old rubber/textile around it, form my point of view no need to change that.
    3) NEVER, NEVER (!) clean a mainspring in an ultrasonic bath! They ALL get SOFT, yes SOFT...! (Losing power).
The spring steel softens due to the U.S.-sound waves.
    4) You are using very good tools, sometimes, in this video I thought you were a bit rough in removing parts (spring hold clip)
    5) A mainspring is greased (I use molykote BR2, a long life + 20 years graphite grease). For cleaning you take the spring apart. You start with removing the centre, recoiling it towards to outer. To redo a centre or outer/hole, put a flame (candle) on the place needed to be bent. This helps to bent and to avoid a further break at that spot.
    6) Mechanics (gears, mainspring) are best cleaned in lighter fluid (clean gasoline).
    7) I would have reused the insulator-papers (original parts)
    8) I think it was a great that they DIDN'T (the factory 1930's) used soldering for contacts. The headlights could have been put in with the holes wiped out at the car body inside rim with sand-paper before. No paint scratching needed, nor soldering.
    9) glueing the driven wheels: any out of alingement/excenter costs driving/clockwork power. Centreing is everything.
    10) ! :
ALL the rest is BEAUTIFUL done! (lets say 80%!)
The sheeps remind me at shawn the sheep from britain! VERY cute!

My Grandfather had a 1938 or 9 Plymouth. Can't remember the model but his only came with one tail light. Wonder when manufacturers started with double tail lights. But anyway....Great job!👍

I know they'll be replaced even 4:30 in, but those wheels/tires could be saved. Drill out and install an oversized bearing.

Everything was great, but it would be better if you didn't change the front window, I think the fabric accessories are better
