For better traction try reducing the air in your tires to just 10 psi before going through sand & carry an air tank to reinflate your tires when you leave the sand.
@CxOxLxE Front suspension was almost free for me. My year 2wd has Torsion bars like the 4x4. I cranked the torsion bar adjusters to give me 3" of lift. 4x4s can't do that as high because of the CV shafts up front. Had to get it aligned after that. For the rear I bought a set of longer shackles and an add-a-leaf off of craigslist for $50.00. The three inch body lift was $150.00. Yours will be different though because you have IRS and IFS. You'd need longer coils or coil spacers front and rear

@ericgerth well its hampered by ground clearence. im wel aware of its suspension design, set up and parts. But It handles like a car and does awesome on road. Off road its a little bouncy but still good

Allowed me to install 33's on the truck and gain precious ground clearance. I won't say it goes everywhere a 4x4 does but it suprises some guys. I don't think it was pointless.

Haven't like the current gen of explorers. When they went over to a unibody layout I lost faith. Third and fourth gen explorers were the best with body on frame and independent rear suspension. I own a 2002 and it's cost me a boatload of money to repair but I think it's worth it.
@punchmaster123 It'll still be a soccer mom vehicle. Im buying a 94 Explorer Limited (thats the last year of the first gen) And even with it being all boxy and manly looking. It's still a soccer mom's SUV. The explorer is a city truck that is just "okay" off road seeing as how it wasnt really built for that. Though the 1st gen kicks ass off road
I'd die if I lifted an explorer that high with the mountains I live in. No straight roads 45 minutes in any direction. I'd spend more time on the roof or shooting 1000ft off a cliff than on 4 wheels. A bit top heavy and narrow to be that high. I owned an 04 for about 10 years or so. Super stable stock for the most part and great in the snow.

John Rowley no, it really affected my wheel travel, without lockers in it I got stuck a few times that I never should have if I'd had the down travel. The body lift on the other hand I loved.

@CxOxLxE Not when everything is in good condition. My tires were like new bought when my friend went to 35's so he sold them to me cheap when he was hurtin for money. They had only 3,000 miles on them when I bought them, exactly one oil change. Compare that to the price of a brand new 33" tire and you'll see why I bought them. I'll never wear out the used shackles so why not buy used ones ? I bought the body lift off of craigslist too but it was new in the box so I really not sue about websites

@CxOxLxE Costed me about $200.00 for the body lift and used shackles off of Craigslist. You could probably get a set of coil spacers for yours for about $200.00 and a body lift for $200.00 for the body lift.
ik I have a 2003 explorer and my father wants to trade in for 2013 and I said no way they don't have the off road truck style body anymore it sucks were sticking with the one weve got its so good in deep water and snow and mud and everything we have the 4.0 v6 but we have a super charger on it 401 hp

@CxOxLxE I bought my 33 inch tires off of a friend for $150 and a set of rims I had already but I paid $100.00 for those. Watch cragislist for used tire and rim packages. I've gotten good deals off of there

@ford2thebone Done the hubs a few times. more often for my abs sensor than for bad bearings though.

Didn't notice any difference in mileage and I record each fill. Didn't have any problems with the body lift in the year ad a half that I had it in.

Those were some of the best looking SUV's ever made. I'm still a little iffy about the new Explorer design. It has grown on me a little bit though.

I have a 2004 explorer... it's about as much and "off road" vehicle as your average minivan would be if you put 4wd in it.
