In a split second he can think of a multitude of options, pick the most appropriate one, and execute it to perfection. Simply the best.
That's the scary thing. As a defender there's almost literally nothing you can do except try and foul him. As a team mate you'd have just been in awe. Maradona had a presence that was hard to match and ability that's actually quite crazy at times.

For me he was more like the Jimi Hendrix of the football world. Passionate, wild, vibrant, and done things that nobody did and still can't do. He sparked a flame in me so deep when I was a small child watching the 1986 World Cup on live TV from my parents lounge room. He was my childhood hero and inspiration. I spent countless hours watching and studying his every move on the pitch. I wanted to be like him on the pitch when I played. He was poetry in motion. He was mind, body and spirit in perfect coordination when he had the ball at his feet. A commander. A general. A leader. A player with unparalleled vision as well. He got kicked and got back up, often times stumbling on his short legs and keeping balance. He was cheeky. He was a cheat. He was deeply flawed and pained. He was like a small boy who refused to grow up. Playful. He suffered and we all suffered with him when he got banned from the World Cup in 1994. He represented the roller coaster ride of life and we all went along for the ride. It has been a beautiful ride. Thank you Diego Armando Maradona. Seeing your creative genius is what makes life worthwhile to me. On a deeper level it reminds me of the miracle of life and the beauty in it and in all of us. We all highlight Maradonas's gifts in terms of dribbling, pace, power etc, but for me he is without doubt the finest player you will ever see in tight situations, with 2 maybe 3 players trying to get the ball off of him, his exemplary first touch and control just made it impossible to get the ball even when being so tightly marked. This was even more evident when he was slightly older and had lost little bit of pace. Phenomenal.

You should have seen him, he made it look easy and magical at the same time. Messi scored some amazing individual goals but Maradona did it every game, week in week out. There's a reason Messi said he could never be that good and it wasn't just hero worship. The 80s were something special. Nevertheless, please take a look at first Arg. vs. Uruguay (!!!) and Arg. vs. Belgium (where he again scored twice). Many players argue Maradona's match against Uruguay was the best of all seven -- even in the final he played a great match staying calm and doing his job, not searching for glory but focused on the WC... and did the key assistance to the 3:2. All in all WC 1986 a masterpiece in the history of sports.

In this game, in order to score one simply has to convince, yes „convince“(!), the referee that the ball moved completely behind the scoring line AND that it was done within the rules.
You as a German will very well know, that none of both can be easily assessed:
completely behind the line… the 3:2, this time from England to (West) Germany in 1966…
within the rules… the 1:0 Argentina to England in 1986.
As you see, in both cases the referee needs the assistance of the lineman. The referee then decides.
In any case, the ruling is done by humans! In football: by the referee and not by the players. And humans are by no means perfect, hence irregular goals are and will be given - yes, even today(!) even though the probability of that is very, very low.
Just to finish off with fair comments, and since so far in my comment I refer to Argentina profiting from a bad decision of the referee, England profits in 1966 and suffers in 1986 from a bad decision, Germany suffers from a bad decision in 1966; we would need Argentina to suffer once and Germany to profit once from a bad decision of the referee.
Once again from a World Cup, 1990:
4 seconds footage from 0:20 to 0:23, where Lothar loses the ball to Calderon and then kicks his leg twice, the first time not necessarily to be taken as a foul, but the second kick is definitely not within the rules… ball was long lost by Matthäus and the extra kick is simply a foul and hence penalty ;):

As with the „hand of god“ („Hand Gottes“ wie ihr es nennt) Lothar would never go to the referee and say: „Hey, wait, that was a foul.“ (the referee stood directly in vision within 2,5m…); Maradona will not go to the referee and say: „I did it with the hand.“… and so on. No.
There is NO CHEATING at all, not from Matthäus - by the way a penalty is statistically 3/4 of a goal… and at the end of a final… goldwert!, as it was the case 4 minutes later ;)-, not from Maradona, not from Hurst, no. To cheat is to act outside the rules; and the rules do not say, that a score from an irregular goal is forbidden!
If it were, there should be then consequently sanctions against those actions and player; and that’s not the case! (no punishment => no prohibition!) Hence no cheating!
Morally, if you wish, one can say smth. about it; but then whoever has competed at elite level knows that EVERYTHING which brings you closer to winning and is not forbidden can and will be used!
It’s the referee’s decision to give it or not, and these are the rules of the game; simple as that.
So, anybody who calls Maradona’s „hand of god“ cheating, does not have any clue at all what elite sports is about! Today luckily with VAR every single of these situations would have been decided correctly within the rules.

The only way to take the ball off Maradona was to foul him. And if you consider nowadays rules, most of the time he was fouled and defenders were so aggressive towards him, but yet he didn't care about it, he just kept going. And that was so beautiful .

Rules got a bit stricter in 86 cus in the previous world cup he literally spent the entire time getting clipped and tripped and fouled. That game against Belgium in 82 was ridiculous, nothing but filth for 90 minutes and the Brazil game wasn't a show of class, they gave a goal kick for what should've been a clear penalty.
