5:04 is when the moment of conception for Tastosis, and probably paved the way for English casting of so many eSports to come. Pretty cool that it's included in this footage.
This video has so many tiny but important bits. Like at 5:00 , tasteless says he might be able to cast in WCG Singapore. And thus the first foreign caster goes to the east and eventually Korea.
5:05 is an unbelievable shot to look at. Artosis looks at tasteless like "yeah, whatever, go talk to him, do what you have to do". I wonder if those two were even friends at all at that time. And yet, somehow, here is captured on video, the SINGLE moment that changed these two people's lives, and also the future of starcraft and sc2. It's unbelievable that you captured on camera the moment that would link tastless and artosis for a decade, and maybe more.
@@taichen6895 First, I highly recommend you search for Day9's "My Life of Starcraft" which explains all of this and covers this event specifically if I recall. Anyway... There was a caster that WCG had brought to the event but he didn't really know what was going on in Starcraft, so he wasn't a great caster. After Tasteless (Nick) lost his game he asked if he could cast the games (or maybe they asked him? I forget) that were going on afterwards. He did a great job and really enjoyed it. The moment that we are seeing right here is Nick deciding to ask the WCG team if he can cast the WCG finals which were held in Singapore. They liked his casting so much that day that they said yes and invited him to do just that. So he went to Singapore with his brother Sean (who was playing) and got to cast the games which in turn lead to his career as we know it today.
Damn this video is so heart warming. I love watching all three of them to this day. It's so nice to see them so young. It almost feels like we're growing old together damn...This was uploaded 13 years ago, I was watching Day9 then, still watching him from time to time now, I still love seeing Tastless ans Artotsis do their thing...time flies man
My favorite moment in this video: Tasteless: "Uh um maybe I can [cast] in Singapore or something... I'm actually gonna go talk to them right now." And Artosis just kinda shrugs.
BNice, Thank you so, so, so much for putting this together. This is one of those rare glimpses into a little known world, and is precious to the people starved for more of the early days of SC. You talk about how unhappy you are with the final product in the description but man is this appreciated. I don't care how little you knew about cinematography back then, all that matters is that you were there with these greats and you took the time to talk to them, interview them and film it all! You've done a great service to this community and I wanna say thanks.
4:37 This is the "commentary save" that Sean was talking about in Daily 100; when the announcer said something stupid about drops on an island map and Nick completely saved him
Oh how much more seriously I would've taken this tournament had I known how much it would blow up. Peep @ 2:03, that's me in the far back with the white headphones and gray polo. I'm JelloPud. Makes me re-think my life decisions of cutting out starcraft and pursuing a college education. "Thanks mom"
don't beat yourself up man, you made the choices you made, and that's just the way it is. if you want to beat yourself up, then do it over how well you executed your plans after this. i have a friend that had to pick between going to BUD/S, joining air force, or becoming a full time musician. each choice would have led to a completely different life, but one is not obviously better than the others. you just pick one
4:36 Tasteless casting for the first time... So amazing to see where they started... Right before that you see Sean explaining / teaching a build to people. This video really foreshadows their careers well.
2019, 4 years after your comment. Artosis still has no clue how to age lol. And he still sounds EXACTLY the same. omfg, he might actually be a real vampire O:
This tournament was the most important thing to happen in the history of competitive gaming. Day9 becoming a freaking king, Tasteless beginning to commentate, Artosis quitting his career in push-ups.... What an amazing thing it was.
Very, very important Starcraft and PC-Gaming history right here. Many people just don't understand how big of a deal PC gaming was in the early 2000s in the competitive Starcraft scene. Counter Strike was also a revolutionary game in the competitive scene; competitive FPS on consoles had sort of a staggered start, but once Halo arrived it grew to enormous heights... especially in the mid-late 2000s around when Halo 3 arrived on the 360. Before then, it was a very PC focused genre. But RTS will always belong to PC E-Sports! There are very special moments in E-Sports that are not talked about with the reverence that they deserve. Films get made, like _Moneyball,_ about special streaks in baseball and things of that nature, but there really should be more films about stuff like this. Artosis, Day9, Tasteless, Neeb, Idra, Qxc, Astrea... they are our American heroes for Starcraft just as Jaedong, Boxer, Flash, Bisu, Stork, NaDa, and FireBatHero were for Korea. There are more I'm not mentioning obviously, but still, they had some of the best moments and went on to legendary status many of them. Artosis and Day9 are to this day a joy to watch. And I still shutter at Jaedong's mutalisk micro. *Cheers to all Starcraft fans!*
I just can't get over it. 5:04 is the very moment Tasteless' life would change forever. How often do you get such an incredible moment captured on video? Amazing.
Dude it was awesome! Thanks for making this video. I think it captured really well the mood and atmoshpere of an e-tournament from a perspective of a one key player. Thanks again!
The gameplay footage cuts with no game music are really cool, it lends an air of intensity and suspense to the game that emphasizes the fierce competitive spirit of the players.
I love this video! It was great to see the dynamic between day9 and tasteless and the lack of communication between tasteless and artosis (AHHH! It's unnatural!) It's also great to see tasteless doing the casting mentioned in day9 daily #100
This is really great stuff man. I've heard both Sean and Dan tell this story before, but it was great to actually see it. WCG 2005 was Sean's first tournament win, and was without a doubt the event that pushed Tasteless towards professional commentary. Again man, thanks for putting this out here, I think we'd all like to see any other footage you were fortunate enough to capture as well.
the editing in this video is godlike! When I saw the "footage" in the title, i thought of no editing at all, but the quality of this video blows my mind!
thank you so much for posting this! i had watched day9's video about this experience but i would have never thought that there would be actual footage of the event. the whole event just goes to show that you never really know how life's going to pan out. i mean sure that tartosis and day9 don't play at the professional level anymore, but they made a career out of their hobby and i think that it's just that much better.
is this the tourney Day9 mentions in Daily #100 where Tasteless jumps up on stage to help commentate for the first time? Something he says around 4:38 reminds me of it.
This video contains the start of Tasteless' casting career. Seriously, him asking about casting WCG Singapore launched him into getting casting gigs in Korea and the rest is history. Funny how casual it was: "I'm gonna go ask.. be right back".
I just found this, and I have to say the production quality on this video is fucking awesome. Switching to exclusively game sounds for the 'battle sequence' was just great.
Awesome video, I love it! I hoped to get to see some of the Tasteless vs Day[9] match but this is already more than you can ask for. I'm glad you watched over the old tapes again and finally released some of it.
The match b/w Artosis and Day9 was edited like a pro. (No pun intended.) It was beautifully done. Man...the graphics and the music bring back sooo many memories. Beautifully edited!

so amazing
12:56 "I'll probably play starcraft until I'm 50" This has aged so well like fine wine. Now just a decade left, what a legend.
Yeah, but the "I'll just practice hard and win the next one" hasn't. He had never won. And now it's certain he never will.
With Brood War ripping his ass open, he's basically played until he's 80.

Tasteless' first casting gig came from going to talk to them. He is still casting Starcraft 2 to this day for GSL in Korea.
LHK ooh, makes sense, will he cast with TB in Blizzcon?
Tasteless basicly was the first who created the foundation a bit for casting in korea. Then later came Arty
It looked like Tasteless was casting for THIS gig though?? He was up on the microphone.
Mick Foley commentating over Artosis' shoulder is the strangest thing I'll ever see in my life
I love that Day[9] looks way younger, but his voice is literally identical to his older self. :P
