This is a real discovery for me. It is one the overlooked gems of the mid C20 trumpet repertoire, joyous and thoughtful by turns, which refreshingly avoids the brash militarism of works of this type. This concerto and its composer should be more widely known.
First time that I have heard this music . Enjoyed it from the beginning , whereas usually i have to listen to piece a few times to get to like it . More please !
A month or so ago I came across Williams' Symphony No.2 and Ballads (Handley/LSO). For me, there no was breaking-in period. She grabbed me in the first couple bars, and simply held me, fascinated. And she's doing it here again with the trumpet concerto. I can't thank you enough for this post. I wonder if this performance is available as a commercial recording.
Thanks for your very nice words on Grace Williams' music! Unfortunately, this fine performance has never been released commercially - it's taken from a BBC broadcast from March 1, 2016.
Alun Hoddinott with whom I studied in Cardiff University from 1968-71 is often credited as being the first distinctively Welsh composer of international standing. He wasn't; Grace Williams preceded him by a generation.
My old Prof at Cardiff University, the late Dr. Alun Hoddinott, i s frequently cited as the first composer to bring a distinctively Welsh voice to international music making. Grace Williams beats him by a generation.
HUW….you sound like a beast….what a great performance and work!!!!

Thank you for your sterling work promoting her work and giving us a chance to know and appreciate it
Great sounds!
One hears the surge and rising of the Sea in much of this amazing welsh cmposer's work !
she was born by the sea and when away in London longed to return to it, which she did :)
