Composing classical music is a dangerous business. When you are as talented as John Williams you expend a great deal of time and energy coming up with a fine piece like this. Unfortunately, all trumpet concertos are measured against the one written by Haydn. The piece he left us is utter perfection because it was composed by a supreme genius at the top of his game. So we thank John for adding an interesting piece to the repertoire and we admire Tom Hooten's amazing performance. But, in the back of our mind is that masterpiece that still thrills and delights us even after centuries have come and gone.

@Alcina Mozart Piano Concerto 23 or Symphony 40 cannot be beat.

As a trumpeter, this does seem like a strange comparison. Haydn’s concerto is well written and for the time, a game changer.. but there are so many other contemporary concertos which are written with just as much poise and musicality - I would argue more so!!. Arutunian, Tomasi, Gregson, Pakhmutova to name a few..
Plus this JW concerto is absolute tripe!!

@Alcina maybe my choice of words is rather harsh, I take it back but I’m still not a fan. For me, it seems like a montage of arbitrary musical ideas which have been thrown together... there doesn’t really seem to be much narrative - maybe it’s because he’s a film composer. These are purely subjective statements and I think others have a different view. compositionally, I think the orchestration is very good... also, it seems like a lot of very difficult corners to get under the fingers for not much pay off...

@@TheGeorge0407 They say there is no accounting for taste. The concertos you mention are fine pieces of music but the Haydn was written by one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time and that's hard to match. Haydn's concerto is perfection and one of the best pieces he ever wrote.

@@stephenjablonsky1941 I think taste is subject to one’s experiences as a musician.. I never thought I would like listening to atonal music until I started to understand it more. I completely respect your point of view, personally I think it’s over played and a bit boring. The Neruda or and Hummel are more interesting Classical concerti in my opinion (the former being the more rewarding to play out of the three)
