Representing just the lower trunk of the tree is the way to go. I think if you are more selective in where you cut your sticks (like at a node or near a y branch) you can depict the root flare of the tree.

This channel is amazing! The quality of the crafts is top notch, the editing is super tight, the narration super charming. You're really coming out of the gate swinging!
The one small change I would make to the trees is painting the ends of the cut branches black so they visually disappear in the play space rather than the bright buff circles they are when cut.
re: moss - aside from being where moisture accumulates, moss also prefers less light, hence it's on the north side of trees. Apply moss as if there's directional light.
The auto-focus did some fucky stuff in the topdown-views but I really like everything else. The presentation, the tiles itself, the puns. I'm here for it!
You can also wrap your trees in Elmer's glue and 1-2 ply toilet paper to give it a wood like look. It's also perfect for making planks of wood for houses, docks, etc. Just take a sheet of card board, lather it in a thin layer of Elmer's glue, then lay rows of toilet paper over the glued areas. Let dry then cut the sheet of cardboard in strips of whatever width you want your planks to be (make sure cuts go with the grain). Then cut those strips in whatever length you want your planks to be. I've used this method since 1989 when making planks and still to this day (even though I use 3D prints now) still will only use this method for plans for docks, houses, etc as it is by far the realistic looking plans I've ever seen in terrain builds.

😂 I hadn't thought of that one haha. If anyone asks me how I would describe my terrain, I will absolutely say it's magnet-ficent. Also, disappointment and waiting is definitely the curse of finding my channel early. 😅
If you want the magnets to get a better hold with superglue, you can file the side you are gluing just enough so that it scratches the magnet and gives a better surface area. This works if your magnets are removing themselves when you pull it away from another magnet.

Thank you very much! I'm happy to inspire and excited for others to try them out too! I would definitely say the waiting game when things are drying is the most time-consuming. It's helpful to craft in batches like 6 tiles at a time so that they're all drying at once and hopefully by the time you finish one part on the 6th tile, the first tile is dry and you can move on to the next stage.

You're on a completely different level from the rest of the terrain makers. Not just from a craftsmanship perspective but also the artistry is several levels above
and now I want to take a tree top and magnet and make removable tree tops and modular tree trunks..... Another excellent video, thank you! I made my attempt recreantly, but tried tile grout instead of proper soil....and that was not really worth it to make mud - better as a dry top effect! But I am getting better at the Proxxon getting consistent sizes! I bought several 2x2x1" "project panel" foam boards that were not full a 1" thick, so my half-inch thick tiles have a lotta cutoffs, but I'll certainly find a way to use those! I recently got into 3d printing, and discovered several folks who have files on sites like Printables that are specifically to help with magnet orientation and storage, which I always wind up mixing up, but the idea of cutting out a hole and forcing the magnet to flip is brilliant - absolutely will make use of that!
Yeah not gonna lie, that's in the back of my brain somewhere too. RP Archive has a tutorial on how he made magnetic tree tops if you're interested. Thank you for the compliments! I do want to experiment with "toppings" like grout for dirt/sand effects. Will probably come down the line at some point. I'm happy you're trying the modular tiles again and sounds like you're having some success! It's wonderful the community's support in making magnet-placement jigs, and I think Matt himself has made a few. Happy to propel his ideas, including the magnet-flipping one!
Another great video and loved the shout out to RP Archives. I've recently went back to watching those as there were some great nuggets of info in there that I'd forgotten. Shame he seemed to disappear towards the end of last year, his instructional approach to builds was top notch (yours are pretty awesome too)
The level of detail and consideration that Matt at RP Archive puts into his videos is unparalleled for sure. He's still making videos though! He's just been fighting a rotten bought with long covid :( But yes there's so much to learn from what he's already put out there!

A little tip for carving rocks out of foam. An ice pick if your friend. Also, crinkling up some aluminum foil and pouring plaster into it gives some really good texture that you can attach to your tiles with Sculptamold it's great stuff.
Yes! I have some other clay-picking tools that I have found immensely helpful! And honestly, I'm a little mess and goop-averse so plaster and sculptamold are slightly intimidating for me to work with, but it's definitely on my list of, "Hey, c'mon now. You gotta try that at some point."

Great to see new uploads. Have you ever considered making magnetic tree tops to hide enemies and secrets under the tree canopy? Would make a cool reveal as the players progress through the forest.
I am considering somewhere in the back of my brain to do magnetic tree tops, (RP Archive has a done a video on this too) I just haven't quite found something that works for me yet. But for sure that'd be a great surprise to have a mini just shoved in there haha.
This was super great! I really like RP archive’s system so really nice this integrates with it. Would be cool if you and him did a collab For the magnets, I think it could be a good tip to try to consistently orient them, eg north facing up south facing down. If you hang a stack of magnets on a string it becomes a compass so you can tell which side is north. I also would be interested in how well metal sheets would work. Matt does some of his tiles with tin strips in the top, by taking off a tiny slice of foam and adding tin strips there, before gluing the top back on By using a thin metal sheet (I’m trying .04” thick, 3” wide), you could maybe have flexibility to place the trees anywhere, as well as other magnetic scatter terrain
Haha I mean that's the dream to collaborate with some of the terrain GOATs on youtube! But yes I like your suggestions and tips to give. I'm trying to find the balance with how much magnet-oriented advice I give if Matt has already given it, in which case I refer to his videos/channel, since I would rather support the original creator(s)! Because these particular trees are heavier than model trees, they do need a stronger connection to stay upright securely, but I definitely want to experiment with more flexible systems (like the thin metal sheet) for lighter scatter terrain in the future.

Great to see new uploads. Have you ever considered making magnetic tree tops to hide enemies and secrets under the tree canopy? Would make a cool reveal as the players progress through the forest.
I am considering somewhere in the back of my brain to do magnetic tree tops, (RP Archive has a done a video on this too) I just haven't quite found something that works for me yet. But for sure that'd be a great surprise to have a mini just shoved in there haha.

For the magnets, I think it could be a good tip to try to consistently orient them, eg north facing up south facing down. If you hang a stack of magnets on a string it becomes a compass so you can tell which side is north.
I also would be interested in how well metal sheets would work. Matt does some of his tiles with tin strips in the top, by taking off a tiny slice of foam and adding tin strips there, before gluing the top back on
By using a thin metal sheet (I’m trying .04” thick, 3” wide), you could maybe have flexibility to place the trees anywhere, as well as other magnetic scatter terrain

Haha I mean that's the dream to collaborate with some of the terrain GOATs on youtube! But yes I like your suggestions and tips to give. I'm trying to find the balance with how much magnet-oriented advice I give if Matt has already given it, in which case I refer to his videos/channel, since I would rather support the original creator(s)!
Because these particular trees are heavier than model trees, they do need a stronger connection to stay upright securely, but I definitely want to experiment with more flexible systems (like the thin metal sheet) for lighter scatter terrain in the future.
