  • In her Changemaker Keynote speech, Moksha likened caring for the planet to caring for her teeth: everyday action is needed to avoid future pain.
Moksha challenged the children’s media community to be ‘brave and responsible’ and wants children to be empowered to overcome climate anxiety by influencing the adults around them because these adults are ones who run the governments and businesses who can bring the "systemic changes" to combat climate change.
Media can do that by empowering older children to ask tougher questions like if their own parents' or relatives' employers pay fair wages to its employees aboard? or are if their pensions are invested in oil and gas? or does their employer pays taxes in the UK at all? Only then the adults can realise how they are endangering their own children's future, directly and indirectly.
Despite what the media is showing kids, children in the global north are totally disconnected with the fact that children in the global south are suffering the extremes of climate change already with floods, heat waves and air pollution severely affecting their basic human (children's) rights to exist respectfully. They are growing up just like their parents in the global north and are becoming part of the same unequal and fractured world which is constantly failing to find empathy for each other, even to ensure co-existence. The COPs have demonstrated this disconcert year after year, without any failure!
As a family of sustainability thought leaders and advocates, Moksha and her family has been preaching and practicing "Selfish Sustainability" over the years. So if children's media professionals too can just be "selfish" to protect their own loved ones from climate change and honestly do all they can, they can bring systemic changes that they think is beyond the remit of children's powers.
