Well, the one ring is still legal in commander. Modern players already sold their rings since summer, that's why the price dropped so much. I don't think it will drop too much. In a year it might even go up again. And there are still great hits in lord of the rings, like bow master.
The one ring lost about 40% of it's value over the past month or so with the anticipation of this ban announcement, I don't expect prices to change at this point. I'm fairly certain most commander players will continue to scoop up their copies now that it's in the "OP but affordable" weird spot, which seems to be cards between 30-50$ at least from my experience.
the funniest part of all of this is that boros energy replaced the one ring and amped raptor by adding in 4 village bellringer(basically pestermite) and splinter twin. nature is healing
The price for the one ring went unchanged while the unbanning of the mox opal made its price double. I guess people don't want to sell their precious ring regardless of the ban.
My locals run nothing but pioneer and commander, so I've never actually seen a lot of the crossover cards in play, the one ring included. I think nobody just wants to be the guy to play it. Not that crossover cards aren't allowed in commander, of course they are. It's just that most of the guys who play commander in my area basically just split their deck in half when they play pioneer. For example, my pioneer deck is a mono white cat deck, and my commander deck is a white and green cat deck.
These are huge changes to legacy and modern. Psychic frog was an absolute powerhouse in legacy, completely removing one of the downsides of graveyard decks, and vexing bauble completely warped the format. Legacy revolves around free spells like force of will and daze. Bauble broke that entirely. Modern will be fun again as the most powerful deck has had a piece that enabled some of it's ridiculously explosive starts banned, as well as the 1 ring getting iced. Faithless looting and twin being unbanned is pretty big, but i was NOT expecting mox opal to return to the format. I could see some nice artifact decks coming back and a hollowed one deck being even stronger now with looting and opal. Depending on how strong opal is, i can see bauble being in sideboards to stop the early ramp.
So beyond hyped for these bans and unbans. The mox opal and looting kind of concern me, but this is the shakeup that the format needed. The format is fun again. A lot of mtg friends I have left modern because of MH3 and the one ring. They are now back in modern.
I may be an idiot, but I don't think splinter twin is going to be that meta-warping in "modern" modern, the game has gotten even faster since it was banned.
I would agree. The format has definitely gotten fast enough and has extremely effective removal that will be able to combat splinter twin. Spells like go for the throat and static prism should be plenty fast enough to stop it. I'm excited to see what people are able to accomplish with faithless looting and the mox unbanning. Maybe some Rakdos affinity and/or hollowed one decks start popping up
Cost is 1 of my main problems in regard to decks, and I usually just build budget decks. The problem is when I take those to the card shops, and they ask what standard it uses because most of the cheaper cards are older the deck is labeled as a legacy/vintage. Most of the time when I tell people that, they just flat out lose interest (assuming it's overpowered) or they come in with an insane op deck of their own (often saying afterward that they expected it to be a bigger challenge). Perhaps I can finally make a moderen deck now.
see if any shop plays Pauper (a format with any card that was ever printed at common in paper or online) you get the legacy and vintage staples of Brainstorm, Ponder, Lightning Bolt, etc but all the cards (outside of a few sideboard pieces) are under a dollar. You can 10 of the top 10 decks for under 100 bucks, with some even as low a 50
The damage portion of the One Ring should've been an emblem. I think then it would've been fine. Every time you tapped the card, you would get a Chandra style damage emblem. Now you can just reset the damage and it's way way too strong.
I got two of The One Ring from the same box but I never play modern and only EDH. I probably should’ve sold one during the hype but as a fan of LOTR, I decided to keep them
i quit caring about winning. i just go to waste peoples time as much as possible. i feed off draining their energy like colin robinson from what we do in the shadows
The idea that Phoenix could be good again because of FL's unban almost has me more hyped that the One Ring ban. It's still my favourite deck that I've ever piloted. So explosive and versatile. I ran it in Arena back in the day with Skewer the Critics (for extra burn) to make good players underestimate my damage output. Hit mythic that season with a 90% winrate. 10/10 would Skewer the Phoenix again.
These bans don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Still modern horizons block constructed. Still tier 0 to tier 0 decks. Still expensive af. I’ll stick to commander XD
They absolutely do matter LOL. Modern just had it's best deck lose 8 cards in a single day, and most decks lost a 4x. It is a massive change. Legacy will return to a more balanced state as now combo decks can't use Bauble as free protection from the format staples, and dimir decks had one of their strongest cards banned as well.
@ my point is not that this wouldn’t shake up the meta. My point is the foundational problems with the format that most players have remain unchanged. They slapped a new coat of paint on and claimed the repairs made. New management same as old management type of deal
@Lazydino59 what is the fundamental problem with modern? Its a powerful format that remains mostly balanced as opposed to formats like legacy and especially vintage. (Vintage is an absolute blast if the people playing let you proxy)
@ the fundamental problem is modern horizons “rotating” the format. MTGGoldfish did a good meta analysis of how much mh2/mh3 impacted and transformed what was previously heralded as a “stable” format. The insane prices of cards was justified by “buy one deck and play it forever”, and now it is “buy one deck and play it until the next modern horizons power creeps it out of the format”. If you played modern for a few years before mh came out you would understand the sentiment much better
This is cool since I play EDH and limited and I want a one ring for my EDH decks. I'm not at all into constructed since the decks are nowhere as fun or as volitile as limited decks and are cram full of expensive cards and despite having 60 cards instead of 40 you run 4 of the same card of almost every card so the card variety isn't there.
It probably will never go down in price below $40 imo. Since it’s banned its reprint equity got slashed and the licensing issues could make it not worth their time. If you have the $40 to spend on a single card you’ll be buying one of the most powerful cards in the format that can be played in literally ANY deck. So it’s up to you but I personally bought one myself for these reasons having never owned one previously
@axelbrackeniers5488 it’s literally not I’m looking at cardmarket now and it’s 45 euro. $45 on tcgplayer. And I meant sustainably sub-40. If it hits $38 for an hour that doesn’t change anything. If it hits $30 and stays there for a week okay I’ll admit I’m wrong. But the floor average will be $40-45 and fluctuate around it slightly as averages do, but I guess I didn’t specify average I’ll give you that
Can we get news from here one out with silly news anchor outfits, this doesnt add anything besides viewing benefit for me. Thank you for considering have a nice day
@Vanity0666 turn 1 infinites are fairly rare even in Vintage. No banlist means a LOT of bullshit is legal. Time vault, tinker, the p9. But so is all the insane counter magic. Force Of Will, force of negation, daze, mental misstep, pact of negation. All of that is legal as well, which are staples in any format they are legal in.
I keep clowning on modern. It is just not my play style. Modern is the back bone of mtg an yeah now the format is made a little healthier for now but we lose the one ring and next year we are gonna gain shit like the Sandy Cheaks Doc Ock deck man. I'm not sure what horrors await us in spidermans new york and bikini bottom. love yalls content though keep up the good work. what an absolutely garbage not-thought-out card, oh an indestructible colorless artifact that has the best draw power in the game? Yeah, okay sounds like a great idea in Idiotland, fucking destroying the meta for months, yeah let's do that. Wizards is only getting worse at balancing as time goes on.
I went to a Friday night magic event with my dad and literally everyone was running 4 rings except us
Praying that lotr draft and set box prices plummet now
They've all already been cracked, they are gonna stay high because so few unopened products exist.

It’d be cool to see you guys do a pauper round robin or a pauper commander big deck energy

would love to see a modern budget battle. there is an endless sea of commander games on youtube but not as much of 1v1 games, which I think is a shame

I love how collectively we believe they banned it because WOTC can’t make money on the boxes anymore which to be fair is probably true
Havnt played modern much but i imagine the one ring made alot of decks viable that wouldnt be without
No, since every deck ran three-four of them bad decks were still equally behind
Not so much, the card is just mechanically overloaded and allows you to prolong the game significantly
Does anyone know why they don’t post one piece content anymore?
Does anyone know the Reddit post they're talking about?
