How to Root the Nexus 6 & Flash a Custom ROM

  • One of the great benefits of the Nexus 6 (besides being a super fast Android device with no bloatware) is the fact that it's almost guaranteed to have a ton of custom ROMs, software hacks, etc. thanks to it's easily unlockable bootloader. Rooting the Nexus 6 is definitely not as hard as most of today's devices because of that fact, but it might still seem a bit overwhelming to someone new to the amazing world of rooting. Because of this fact, I figured I'd do a quick walkthrough video of the entire process of rooting the Nexus 6, as well as how to flash a custom recovery (the thing that allows you to flash different versions of the operating system as well as perform backups, etc.), and finally how to flash a custom ROM on it as well (which is a pre-packaged customized version of Android created by some talented third-party developers from around the world).
    If any of that just got you even mildly excited, then I think we're ready to continue.

    Thank you. Partially worked for me in 2023. Using the ADB console to flash after rooting was better than using TWRP which refused to work for me. I was probably doing something wrong though.
    This was a great start and comprehensive tutorial for rooting

    Good Day! My build is not listed in the tool. I have an MOB31T and the tool stops at S. Should I use the last one before my build or just go with Auto Detect Device + Build?

    Mate, I got a rooted nexus 6 and by mistake i wiped the partition and OS. Now the phone doesn't have the OS it says and showing a google logo and unlocked sign. How can I put back the Android? Will be thankful if you could guide me.

      Plug in your nexus 6 into your computer and see if your computer sees it. If your system sees it then you can download the adb files, open a command prompt and issue "adb reboot recovery" to boot to the recovery and flash a new ROM. If you are unable to boot to the recovery and can issue adb commends then issue "adb reboot bootloader" to boot to the bootloader. Grab TWRP and issue "fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img" to reflash the recovery, use the arrows to select reboot recovery and boot to the recovery to reflash the ROM.
      If anything, you can download the original images off of Android's developers site and just flash all the original images again using the fastboot protocol.

    I love how when I go to your website you have a pop-up to join your site that can't be closed with the "close" button and won't let to navigate the site at all unless you sign up with your email address. That is really awesome cause I want more spam and not useful information that I know is on the website but I can't get to. Super.

      Hi there, no need to be sarcastic. If there is an issue on the site just let me know. I don't want that to work that way obviously and if it's broken I need to fix it. It works for me so not sure why it's not letting you use it. Are you using a phone or a computer? What browser?

    • @alstory87
      @alstory87 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that was fast. First, let me apologize for being a stereotypical internet coment section bitch. Mobile phone, chrome browser on nexus 6.

    • @TheUnlockr
      @TheUnlockr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +alstory87 ha no worries, I get it --it was frustrating I'm sure. I see why it won't let you close it. I'll fix the code asap in the meantime I've completely disabled it. Try to go there now if you still need to and you should be good to go. Sorry!

      +alstory87 again no worries I'm sure it was annoying (I'd be pissed too). Thanks for responding though and letting me know what was the issue! Have a good weekend!

    So you can remove all of that AT&T crap now,right?

    • @TheUnlockr
      @TheUnlockr  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. Flashing a custom ROM after this that has the boot logo replaced and ringtone folder would do that :)

    What is a custom rom ????

    • @TheUnlockr
      @TheUnlockr  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! Basically its a custom version of Android that can be flashed onto the device after you've rooted it (aka gained full permissions/root access). You can see some of the ones we've found on my site for the Nexus 6 here - theunlockr.com/roms/android-roms/nexus-roms/nexus-6-roms/
