My father got a guitar for Christmas when I was 11 years old.and they immediately put me into guitar lessons and I took lessons all through my teenage years, I.spent my whole teenage years playing with an older group of friends who played guitar also. I also took drumming lessons, played saxophone, bass guitar, 12 string guitar some keyboard.. For the last 5 years, I have been teaching a 17-year-old boy guitar every Wednesday night. I'm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I'm 55 years old.
Very interesting story, Ivor. I'm 71, been playing acoustic for decades, and have taken a lot of lessons from you, particularly those Beatle and other 60s song lessons. Thank you so much for what you do
I really enjoyed listening to that! Very interesting. I'm similar age, 74, I couldn't afford a guitar in the early Beatle years but borrowed one from a friend, limited value as I am left- handed. Didn't have a natural gift and without anyone to teach me never got anywhere. In spite of that my best friend and I got invited to join a band at age 14, purely because our singing sounded like the Beatles. We had great fun, my mate was vocalist and I eventually got a cheap guitar and pretended I was actually playing with the volume turned off! Big regret that I never made more effort to learn to play. I was too busy enjoying the attention from the girls! I've learned more from you Ivor than anyone else. I have to be shown everything - your lessons have been invaluable to me.
Nice to get to know you a little Ivor. It's always a pleasure learning from your videos and you make them helpful and easy to follow. One of the best guitar tutors on TH-cam.
I was always curious about this. I looked on Google a few times. Thanks for the interesting story. Besides a person thinking about their own life, they also wonder how others ended up where they are.
The video we Ivor fans have been waiting for! Thank you Ivor for your interesting story of your musical journey. I envy your friend Malcolm! Wish I had a local friend with your expertise to jam with. My only comment on your remarks about "don't know scales, not a technical person, etc"... I think you have a unique ability to be able to listen to a song and be able to arrange it for solo acoustic guitar, (even songs that were originally recorded on piano), and make it accessible for us lesser talented players. You have come out with so many lessons for songs I love and never thought I'd be able to play. For that I am grateful.

Thanks Ivor for giving us your personal history with the guitar we are the same age and started playing at the same time yea getting a guitar at the time was difficult i was lucky my big Brother came back from university and left one in my Bedroom Ivor Carry on doing what you do it does that it says on the can 😀

You're an essential conduit of cultural transmission Ivor! You've created an important archive of material here. I hope TH-cam realises that. I'm trying to do a little bit of the same thing at ultimate-guitar, transcribing the songs that no one else seems to have had a go at, mainly from 60s-70s-80s British pop bands.

Hi Ivor, I loved listening to your musical history, I have no doubt that we all have very similar stories to tell. I am 74, and we migrated to Australia in 1960 after dad retired from the British Army. I have to thank Hank Marvin for my career in playing guitar because when I first heard Apache, about 1963 ?, I said to myself, I have to learn guitar and play that tune. The rest is history. I still play guitar, I don't read music but play by ear. I watch you quite regularly because I enjoy your presentation. Thanks again, George.

You keep things nice and simple and easy to follow your fingers for chord shapes, I played when younger and give up for 30years due to life getting in the way been playing again for the last 10 and enjoy your no fuss tutorials a lot thanks

Your output rolls out at a rapid pace,and I often wonder how long it takes you to learn a song,then convert it to a lesson. Do you have the chords to follow or do you determine the chords/runs from the records?
Hi Frank. Glad to hear that you enjoyed my potted history video. I generally work out songs by ear and run through my arrangement a few times before making a lesson on it. This usually takes 2 to 3 hours unless it's a simple song. Ivor
