Creating a shimmer reverb the right way: with a feedback loop in Reaper!

  • In response to my previous video where I lazily hacked a shimmer reverb together, I got some comments: 'isn't the pitch shifter supposed to go in a feedback loop for it to be a proper shimmer?'
I guess they were right, but I find both ways equally interesting and useful.
Make sure you have sensible channel levels, and that you have 'auto-mute' setup in Reaper (it should be by default anyway)... just in case you blow up your speakers, headphones, or neighbour's house.
I'm using Kilohearts freeware here because it's awesome, but you can use whatever you have to hand.
    Tips:
    1. Make sure in project settings that you have ticked the option to allow feedback routing,
    2. Guitar amp sim on one track
    3. Add a reverb as a send fx to a new track, route the send from track 1 and then set to a decent length (10-15 seconds is fun).
    4. Add a pitch shifter on a 3rd track, turn it up to +12 or +24 semitones. Send from reverb track to this track, and then another send back to track 5. Turn down if necessary or you'll get shrieking and destruction.

Nice one, I didn't know you could do that in Reaper! Try a frequency shifter in a feedback loop next 😉
