I think it's well worth mentioning that the review from Jayz2Cents was quite positive simply from the point of view of a guy who builds PC's rather than a tooling expert. In my mind that is quite representitive of the audience that this product is aimed at. 2nd place overall from a Project Farm review is amazing, especially considering this is your first entry into the market. You're competing against companies that have poured decades of time and millions of dollars into R&D. To accomplish such a high ranking with your (relatively) low R&D cost, fair product value, and scale of manufacturing is phenomenal. Great job to all the wonderful people that worked so hard to make that product a reality.

In europe you can buy a version of the pb swiss with bitstorage and the same ratcheting mechanism. And here it costs 80 CHF. The ltt screwdriver costs at least 86 Dollars because of shipping. So for the price difference isn't a factor for us. Just the planed application for the driver and the timeframe in that you want to get your product. For more rugget but still precise use the pb swiss is better suited and for more delicate work the ltt driver is better suited.

Take reviews in TH-cam with a grain of salt. There’s more to buying a tool than what they tested it for. If it breaks how long will the warranty return take. Why wasn’t that taken in to account. Plus Linus just uses it to put screws in a computer. How he does it I can do the same with a regular non mechanical screwdriver and even a version that takes bits. If his piece would of been lower then most wouldn’t have an issue with it.

I had low expectations for the LTT screwdriver prior to it's release. As a carpenter and former construction worker, it's often painful to watch tech oriented TH-camrs attempt to build things as they have little knowledge of tools and construction materials as well as a tendency to misuse or use improper equipment. Not even close. It's $70 US dollars. The Megapro what the LTT one is based off is less than half that. And Gearwrench as well with very similar reesults.
As a screwdriver on it's own merits, it is far too expensive, and so are some of the others that Project Farm tested.
Maybe its reasonable if you consider it what it is, and that is LTT merch, where the product is half of what you're paying for the other half being supporting a creator you like. And that's fair enough, but as a screwdriver itself, its definitely not reasonable value.

Cost is relative. Having a distribution center in the EU might mean it would cost more than having it shipped over. A more effective way of having a inexpensive screwdriver is to have a manufacturer of the tool out in the EU. Other problem with that is the logistics of running another production facility overseas. That's exactly what I was thinking while watching Todd's video. I absolutely hate when I can't get the bit out of a screwdriver without using another tool. There's a sweet spot for bit retention and it's got to be strong enough that you can kind of torque the bit and the screw head together without the bit hanging up in the screw head when you go to pull the bit out of the screw head while still being able to remove the bit from the screwdriver without extra tools. The thing about pricing can really make or break a product. I recently started woodworking and want to buy a nailgun but in germany we don't build many houses out of wood so nailguns aren't really a thing here especially electric ones. So in the US you can buy one from various brands for something like 200$ but here you can only buy one model, from one brand for 600€. On the other hand a circular saw that costs like 2000$ in the US can be bought for 800€ because it's made in germany.
As for the review of the screwdriver. I was surprised how good it matched up to the competition and how much it differs from other products. It really shows how much research, engineering and work went into the product.

@@mojolotz Yes, most use pneumatic ones or Paslode ones with gas cartridges that need service once a year. Pneumatic ones are cheap but you need a compressor, extension cords for air and electricity. In other markets they switched to battery electric ones. It's a lot more comfortable to use a battery one when you're up in the rafters or on a site where you don't have electricity or access to it is limited.
Talked to some carpenters if they have access to more electric nailguns apart from the Makita for 600€ I can buy and they don't. Most of them stopped using nailguns and switched to using screws because they the building code allows it, they safe on some hardware to secure rafters and they can use the impact drivers they already have and have the freedom of a cordless tool. However it was actually the independent reviews that convinced me, largely because of the mentality LTT has always had on trusting and cross-referencing data from multiple independent reviews. The fact that New Zealand has a very narrow selection of brands when it comes to products like this also helped.

A truly detailed test would require repeating the test several times with fresh ratchets every time. Now you're getting into serious money for what is really a personally subjective decision. The reviews are great guides and I just don't need to have the kind of precision that some people demand. If the test used a representative sample of the product AND the test procedure is actually relevant to intended use, it's a good test. I would have expected LTT to test a dozen of them to failure before final approval, but that isn't necessary for TH-cam tests. Anyone who needs that kind of test depth should hire an engineering firm to test case quantities. It's a ratchet, it's not that complicated.

I love Project Farm for his reviews and subscribed to him for YEARS over how good they are in making tool purchase decisions.
Not only that, I think anyone complaining about the cost really doesn't know the tool sphere where anyone buying quality tools (especially if you run a business using those tools like with woodworking) knows you HAVE to have a "buy once; cry once" mentality where you spend the moolah (cry) and then are almost guaranteed never to spend it again vs cheaping out and needing a new tools every 3-5 years that quickly adds up to more than the expensive one in the long run! When it comes to the differences between tests, most notibly the screw retention strength of the magnet, its worth pointing out too that theres some varience due to testing methodology. Todd measured the force it takes to pull a screw from the bit, this is a combination of both magnetic and mechanical grip. If the screw and bit were more tightly toleranced the subsequent force is higher than the magnet alone. Whereas Jeff tested magnet strength at the tip of the bit only, which may also be lower on the LTT driver compared to other brands because it may rely more on magnet proximity rather that magnet strength. As the bit is much shorter a smaller magnet can be used, but that means a magentic field strength works on the square-root power rule that the closer proximity of the top of the screw will experience more magentic field strength. In other words its entirely possible the LTT screwdriver has a smaller effective magnetic field range, but once in said field it is comparably strong.

In the late ‘90s a contractor friend of mine showed me his t-handle snap-on ratcheting screwdriver and I was instantly smitten by it. I initially bought their ‘stubby’ model but in short order got the medium shank and long shank one as well. I’d say 99% of my use case for these three has been building and repairing PCs and the medium shank in particular has probably cycled through thousands of PC component screws (the long shank is great for harder to reach areas; I don’t use the stubby much - but it’s in my ‘oh crap!’ go bag.)
So yeah, I’ve had these three for going on 25 years and wouldn’t touch a PC without them. Thing is, I paid roughly $240 for the three of them back in ‘96-‘97 (and my friend had to help me flag down a truck 2x…) bottom line is, if you are looking for tools that do the job you need them for, the price shouldn’t scare you away from buying quality. So I work as an electrician and I'm really considering adding it to my set of carrying tools(The tools I have always in my tool pocket/pouch. I most likely will add it but damn if i could get the handle isolated would be soo perfect!! Like in electrician tools you have fully isolated tools(Shaft and handle) and you have partially isolated(Only the handle). If there was an LTT screwdriver that was partially isolated ohh perfect!!!

I’ve never used internal bit storage because I work at a bench and have a nice, labeled tray for my bits. When you are working in tight spaces and need to get a screw started without cross threading it, having less slop in locked mode helps with feel.

The thing to bear in mind about reviews like Project Farm (which are very thorough and good) is that they are an objective review of various metrics in isolation, with no regard for context. That's good for comparison, but just because one scores badly doesn't mean it's bad. It might have excelled in the areas that are most important for what it was designed for and performed poorly in other areas.
With regards to the LTT screwdriver, if it performs exceptionally in PC building and other electronics then I think you've succeeded. When I've got my hand in a tight space trying to put a small screw in that only requires very light torque, I don't care how much rotational slop there is in the fixed mode because I'm never going to use that in this scenario.

    • @itscaptainterry

It looks nice, sounds like it functions perfectly for professionals that would use it for their job as one of their go to tools akin to a snap on tool. But for the everyman this is not the tool for you, nor would I use it in more industrial areas or jobs. If your building stuff as a trade that require something like this things versatility (I see most of those bits never even seeing use or leaving the driver once loaded into their cradles). As far as bit retention goes, I have a screwdriver that performs better in that category. But, it is so strong that for half the bits I use I need a pliers to remove the bit. :( Magnetic strength is definitely a balancing act. Project Farm's review is definitely going to make me consider using it on the farm (where I am only happy if a tool has industrial strength). This is something that is well outside LTT's design scope. Based on the independent reviews, I feel that LTT did a great job at building a quality tool for its intended purpose.

I just happened upon the PF roundup. I'm kind of unusual because my 2 primary "hobby" interests are computers and wood/mechanical related activities. The latter has caused me to accumulate a tremendous number of tools over 50 years. I should also mention that my personal tool approach is buy the best you can afford so you only buy once. Also I also have a Batchelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering so I know a piece of crap tool when I see one. All of that said, as I watched the test video my feeling was it was thorough, fair and rigorous. My takeaways were; viewed as a purpose built computer assembly tool, it's unbeatable. Even though the Swiss tool was better in a couple of categories the price was a) ridiculous and b) when viewed in context, actually in my mind, made the LTT driver's price reasonable especially when the thoughtfulness of design became apparent . The fact that it could also be used as a general purpose tool is true, but for me is inconsequential. I have so many beater drivers that I don't care about that I wouldn't reach for the LTT driver unless necessary, but I do realize that some folks don't have that luxury, and for them it seems plenty durable. Finally, the tool directly addresses so many issues that I experience (trust me, when you get to 65 years old your dexterity is nowhere close to what it used to be). In view of all of the above I'm going to buy one and if you're a computer enthusiast, you should too.

I work in IT supporting field service repairs of IT equipment (PC's, Servers, Printers, Scales, etc) - ie, a lot of screwdriver work, lots of bits. In my screwdriver, here is what I populate my 12 slots with: Top six - T25/20/15/10/8, 5/32 security hex. Bottom six- SL2.5, PH1/2/3, PZ1/2. For most things, all I need is my screwdriver, and a telecom spudger (those little plastic pick things, I use the yellow version designed not to damage PCB's, not the black sharp ones that you see Linus use sometimes, as those like to stab me and can damage things if you slip). I want to love the LTT screwdriver - it is essentially an IT optimized version of the Megapro Automotive, and has a CRITICAL manufacturing refinement in the ratcheting mechanism tolerances to reduce jams (see the "why it took so long to make this thing" video, where Linus talks about the jamming problem). The jamming/ratchet wear issue on the Megapro Automotive has resulted in me being on my fifth copy of the thing, in just 4 years, due to me preferring to just buy a new one once that little rocker bit starts misaligning and causing jams.
Given how much I use my screwdriver, does that mean I've switched to the LTT one vs the Megapro? Sadly, no. I wish I could, but I simply can't, due to the 20mm bits - not being able to use standard bits in all 12 slots - and I both need and want ALL 12 if I want to carry just one tool - is a killer. Being able to replace worn or lost bits immediately by walking into any store that sells tools is critical when you use a tool for work. Sure, you could buy more of the stubby bits from LTT, but that's an additional expense, and an additional thing you need to keep track of - but even in that scenario, LTT doesn't make every possible bit type. 5/32 security hex is available at any Lowes/Menards/Home Depot, but unavailable from the LTT store (... T25 security would work I suppose).
I ended up giving my LTT screwdriver to my boss as a gift, as it did not meet my needs. If Linus ever makes one that can store regular size bits, I'll buy 5 for myself, and 3 additional to give away as gifts (ie to coworkers who I am tired of having to come help out when they can't fix things). No hesitation on that, when it's for work, the price is less important than the function, and if it held the regular size bits the LTT tool would be the handsdown king.
