Very informative! Leg cramps run in my family. My podiatrist recommended 800 mg magnesium daily which worked very well. When my cardiologist told me to stop taking it I halved the dosage to 400 mg daily the halved it again to 400 mg every other day. The cramps began to return. When I informed my cardiologist of this he relented and told me that I could resume the supplement. I now use 400 mg per day and have been free from night time leg cramps ever since.

She has some bad info. If you get a cramp while laying down in the bed you have no time to fool around while horizontal and the cramp is intensifying. You have to get out of the bed immediately, no matter how much it hurts and stand on the leg and then walk on it. If the cramp is severe and pain persists, a hot shower is helpful. I learned this from prolonged experience with statin meds, which I no longer take. Much better to control cholesterol by diet than by meds.

Being an avid SCUBA Diver, calf muscle cramps are quite common. According to the literature, cause is from dehydration, the cure grab your swim fins and pull back, stretching the calf muscle. This has served me well, similar to your wall stretch. Dehydration is caused by the dry air we breathe underwater, funny though your surrounded by water and suffer dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids before diving, usually with a salt pill added. Now that I’m in my mid 60’s I get the worst left calf muscle cramps imaginable due to a spinal cord injury. After multiple doctors visits, I can not find any relief, it usually last 1-2 minutes almost weekly. Hopefully more research will help the 30-40% of older people this effects. Thank you for your videos, I share them with my GP trying new ways to find relief from my lower back injury’s after three surgeries.

      @carolmason9386 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with your findings. I just added a post saying the same thing.
For every muscle that cramps, there is an opposite muscle you can use to pull yourself out of the cramp.
I am not saying in every case it's dehydration, however, in ours, it is.
      Stay hydrated!! 😁

I have two comments. First is that stretching is not really the most effective way to stop cramps- the most effective thing is to activate the opposing muscle (the antagonist). It works because (with a few limited exceptions eg. standing from a seated position) you cannot contract both the flexors and extensors at the same time- your brain automatically relaxes the muscle opposite to the one being contracted. So for a calf (gastrocnemius) cramp, you want to actively pull your foot upwards towards your knee, contracting the extensors in the anterior (front) compartment of your leg. This will inhibit the calf from contracting. Then you can stretch it to relax the spasming fibers.
-The second thing is to add to the stretching technique shown in the video. We have three muscles in our calf complex, however the one we are concerned with is gastrocnemius, the most superficial one that is commonly thought of as our "calf". It actually has two heads- a lateral (outside), and a medial (inside) head. Look at any image of it and you will see it very clearly. While the stretch demonstrated is OK, it is more effective to isolate and stretch each head individually- you can do this by rotating your body at the hips while stretching, or swinging your opposite leg in front of your body to the inside and outside.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. They are very useful. I'm over 70 and suffer from muscles cramps eventually. The muscles affected are the thigh abductors. It happens rarely but when it happens it's really painful. I cannot move, even stand or walk. I try to stretch those muscles but it hurts, it hurts it hurts. Taking magnesium everyday helped me so far as well as some mild workouts I do everyday. Is there any other way to cope with this terrible feeling? They happen only at nights and they awake me from my sleep, never when I'm awake, swimming, driving or exercising. Thank you so much.

I'm nearly 80 and I get leg and foot cramps after exercise - walking more than 7 or 8 km. I've tried everything, but have found I rarely have the problem if I take ibuprofen the morning of the exercise. I always take it after breakfast so my stomach is lined (as a lot of ibuprofen damages the stomach lining). That's all the ibuprofen I take, just on the day of the exercise and only one 200 mg tablet. Another thing that helps - apart from stretching at onset of the cramps, is massage with a long armed massage machine - but this is a last resort. Push-ups and the "dog" and "cat" exercises are very effective in stopping neck cramps and lower back pain. The push-ups are an trick told to me by an old (Australian) shearer - if anyone would know, they would.

When an excruciatingly painful calf cramp strikes, counter intuitively, immediate relief can be obtained by standing up and putting one's full body weight on the affected leg while keeping that knee slightly bent.

I sometimes have leg cramps severe and then I remember: there is a pressure point at the point above the lip and below the nose. I squeeze there and the cramp goes away. Sometimes I forget to do that. I am usually lying down, trying to sleep, when it happens.

Two solutions to ease or cease cramps I have found useful are Cuprum Metallicum tablets, or if not available a few grams of seasalt.

I frequently get calf cramps at night which diminish once I sit-up and grab and massage leg. It mostly happens during leg stretching at night in sleep or otherwise

I used to drink pickle juice too. I upgraded to celtic salt. It naturally has sodium, potassium, and magesium in it that refined salts may not have or may have them artificially added. It's important for these three to be consumed together. They work together to make sure that the body is processing them correctly. For example table salt gets in the body and causes blood pressue to rise, which is what it's supposed to do, but what happrns is because potassium is not present, the salt is not expelled properly from the body so it keep circulating and causing the blood pressue to stay high for long periods (which it'snot supposed to do). Athough the body needs salt, prolonged high blood pressure causes problems in other parts of the body if it goes on for years. For people with high blood pressure, I recommend using Celtic salt or Himalayan pink salt (be careful with the pink salt, many are fake). I recommend ICE for an emergency spasms. Get an ice pack or something cold and put it on the effected area wrapped in a towel or sheet. At night, I keep the product Biofreeze next to my bed. I use the roll on but it comes in a gel, roll on, foam, and patch. Those two methods work the fastest. Stretching makes mine waaaaaay worse. I focus on telling my body to relax first. Most of the times, spasms happen when I need to urinate. Which is good because although I don't want to move, it forces me to walk it out. When I get to the bathroom my feet are on cool tiles which helps the muscles to calm a bit. When I am done, the muscles are normally loose enough to make it to the kitchen to grab my ice pack. It can be super hard to walk through that pain but it works for me. Prevention things I've learned is taking celtic salt everyday just a pinch directly and in all my cooking, DO NOT stretch in bed, don't let the legs and feet get too warm at night.

Move your legs rotationally until you find the least painful spot.
Walk after every houre sitting behind computer desk
Try all sort of leg movements during the day to adapt you muscle n nerves with all positions so when you dream your body wouldnt be fooled to respond to ur dreams by contraction/expanding of muscles and nerves..its metaphysical and psychological phenomenon i believe but still unknown to us..in case of non medical related cramp ..thanks for video

I use either a heating pad, aspirin, pickle juice or vinegar, (drink or rub on muscle) or a combination of these. Pickle juice is just the electrolyte salt and vinegar. The vinegar works within about 20 seconds and works almost every time and a heating pad always works. The aspirin works if the cramp is a little more stubborn or as a preventative. I found out about the vinegar because the Amish make a liquid which you can drink or rub on the muscle. It is garlic, vinegar and I think one other ingredient. It is a little expensive so I decided to try a cheaper version. They all work well.

Are you familiar with Reynaud's Phenomenon? I suffer from this and let cramps have plagued me all my life. I know that when I take a multi-vitamin with Vit D in it helps but not a fix all. Do you have anything about someone with that ailment and cramps? My cramps can happen anywhere, under any circumstance and can last for 1-5/6 minutes. A long time.
