  • This is a long lost recording of several phone company intercept recordings. some are rare, and some you can still hear today. Just take a nostalgic listen to the voices of our past. We have all heard these at one time or another! You will hear Jane Barbie and Pat Fleet among many others. This is the chorus of the 80's phone system. Enjoy.

Back when I was a kid, I used to spend hours on the phone dialing random numbers back in the early to late 1980s hearing telephone recording errors, and a few would even say for an example "This is a recording" and also say the city and state where the recording was from. Some recordings will say: "It is not necessary to dial a 1 dialing this number"

OMG! I thought i was the only person who used to do that!! I was obsessed with wrong number recordings when I was a kid, back in the 80's! I remember if you dialed one number on a rotary phone half way, it would connect you to an operator and they would say "Hello, what number are you dialing?" And then they would say "Hold on" and you'd hear a click, followed by a recorded message saying 'I'm sorry, the number you have dialed is no longer in service, no further information is available about 765-4321" Or if the number you gave them was a valid number, the recording would end in "Is a working number".

OMG!!! You too??!! I did the exact same thing!! I loved it! I would actually look forward to when my parents would go out and leave me home alone, so I could fool around on the phone. Hahahaha. When I lived in Maine, if you had a rotary phone, you could dial one number halfway and then an operator would come on the line and ask what number you were calling. I'd make one up and then she would say hold please, and then a recording would come on telling me if the number was working or not in service. I used to do that for hours!

There is really something unsettling about the background buzz/hum and the lower audio quality voice speaking to you. Like something from a horror movie. For children growing up with this, the landline phone was one of the main sources of comm & fun back before internet & mobile phones. So we took it seriously, and as a kid that combined with the creepy feel really made it scary. Similar to the TV emergency alert system, which was def worse

The Weatherchron AIS lady used to scare the crap out of me when I was a kid, I thought she sounded like an angry robot. The disconnected number recording was the most frightening not just because of the mechanical repetitions of the number and the ghostly looping crosstalk in the background, but also the finality of it: no further information is available. The changed number recording at least had some consolation, but the machines won when the number was disconnected.

I was not around in the 80s or 90s, and these messages scare the living daylights out of me. They trigger every flight or fight response.

me too. really wanna be creeped out? look up the tests of the "emergency alert system" that would air on TV. the electrical buzzing is twice as creepy as these. Has the same feel as this stuff, sort of

Back in the 1980s I was a tsps operator for Diamond State Bell, a baby Bell that no longer exists. When you would stay in a hotel and needed to place a call I would handle the time and charges of a call or person to person calls as well. Back in the day getting a job with the Bell system was a dream, well paid, very well trained and often a career.

Back in high school, when I had my first telephone (a red rotary just like the one in this video!) I remember once trying to call a friend of mine, and apparently misdialed, and got a recording I had never heard before, nor since: "We're sorry, the number you have reached is not accepting incoming calls." No matter how many times I tried to recreate that misdial, I never managed to get that recording again.
Have you ever heard it? Got a copy? I'd love to have it, for old times sake.

You probably called a private pay phone, as in a pay phone that is operated by a company other than the local Telco. They usually lease lines that are outgoing calls only. Very rare and very cool.

If you call the weather number in Cincinnati (513) 721-1700, they use the NOAA Weather Radio forecasts, but the menu selection voice is great! If you don't make a selection, she says, "Hello! Are you still THERE?" 😂
