The use of Lust for Life in the opening moments of Trainspotting was one of the most brilliant moments in cinema. Also, that's Bowie doing background vocals. Their careers crossed over in the 70's with Bowie producing Pop's music and Iggy writing some songs that Bowie covered like China Girl and Tonight. Please do Pop's Candy. Kate Pierson is featured and her vocals are amazing.

Traditionally, when artists are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they perform at the ceremony.
In 2008, when Madonna was inducted, she requested Iggy Pop and his band the Stooges perform in her stead, as a protest to the Hall of Fame for not inducting the Stooges despite their being nominated several times.
The following year, it was announced the Stooges would finally be inducted.

And someone hit Iggy in the face with a balled up cup of ice, like hit him right in the eye, and he just stood back fro a sec, wiped his eye, blinked a few times, and kept on singing barely missed a beat. Iggy & Bowie co-wrote a LOT, over the years (as well as: Bowie covering Iggy's songs! Most famously: "China Girl" ....).
Bowie, also, Produced Iggy's first two solo albums (including THIS one-rather: NOT the Trainspotting soundtrack (if anyone was thinking THAT1), but, rather: the original album. Lust For Life (Iggy's sophomore solo album)))
AND played in his live/touring band, at the time, too.
....they have an extensive personal history (never mind the massive influence that Iggy and Lou Reed had on Bowie (musically as well as image-wise!)-not to mention on: nearly everyone else, paying attention, in the world; at the time and for decades-and-decades later.

Iggy is a legend and he survived everything, i like to think he will outlive us all. He' is present in instagram and makes videos with his parrot. Such a character. He represents freedom, rebellion, and the underground like no other. No wonder he was there when punk was born and inspired many that came next. David Bowie was one of his closest friends. When he was having rough times in the 80s and had debt, Bowie released China Girl, which was written by Iggy Pop so to help with the royalty income. There is movie called Velvet Goldmine, which is inspired by David Bowie and the Glam Rock genre from the 70s, that has Ewan Mcgregor (ObiWan from episodes 1 to 3 of star wars) playing a musician based upon Iggy pop and Ewan sings his songs there. By the way, this is from the soundtrack to Trainspotting, a great movie from the 90s, it could be very shocking cause it is about the junkies taking heroin in Scotland and it also has Ewan Mcgregor as a main man.

Iggy Pop is another one of the more colorful characters that emerged onto the scene in the sixties but is mostly known for his comeback in the seventies. Born James Osterberg, he became Iggy because of his time playing in The Iguanas, a local neighborhood band from Ann Arbor, Michigan. A fairly competent drummer, Iggy saw a Doors concert in 1966 and became fascinated with Jim Morrison's ability to communicate with the audience. From then on he worked on becoming a front-man with a few fellow dropouts thus forming The Stooges. As a child, his parents were teachers and lived in a trailer parked near cornfields in the outskirts of Ypsilanti near Ann Arbor. A very perceptive child, and taunted by kids in school for living in a trailer, Iggy learned to be distrustful of people at a very early age. All signs suggest that he did not have the emotional maturity to deal with the minor success that he gained with The Stooges in 1969-70. The whole band minus the guitarist became heavy heroin addicts which effectively destroyed their carriers. Through David Bowie who admired Iggy's stage presence RCA signed Iggy Pop which gave The Stooges a second wind. But alas, still junkies, the band managed to release one last album (produced by Bowie) in 1973 then fizzle out mid 1974. Iggy spent the better part of 1974-75 cleaning up in a mental institution. Once out and about Iggy and Bowie, who himself was in the process of cleaning up from his addiction to cocaine, gave each other moral support to stay clean. Bowie helped Iggy orchestrate a comeback. Bowie produced Iggy Pop's first solo album 'The Idiot' (Mar77) and the follow-up album 'Lust For Life' (Set77). Iggy Pop promoted the album by touring the US playing small theaters and the occasional TV show with a small four piece band having David Bowie as the pianist and backing vocalist. That Bowie, already world renown, toured in Iggy's band as such a minor player speaks to their friendship. Bowie's relationship with Iggy, a man notorious for not trusting people, is an example of kindness that I suspect had a positive effect on James Osterberg's psych. Regardless, Iggy Pop became a respected artist from the eighties onwards to this date. There is plenty of footage to see him on stage as a young man and as an old man. As frontmen go, he is always a very wild active act to catch.

Iggy Pop, Blondie, and The Talking Heads were some of the biggest influences on the American Punk scene. Pretty much all of those New York underground bands of the 1970s were just going against the music industry. They got sick of being rejected by Music Labels and Concert Promoters, so they played underground clubs like CB-GBs and found their audience.

Detroit's own Iggy Pop started out with The Stooges in the late 60s and early 70s. It was Punk before Puink and a huge influence on UK Glam and Art Rock artists, ESPECIALLY Bowie, who helped produce the last Stooges album (Raw Power, 1973). Iggy recorded two albums cowritten and produced by David Bowie in 1977 in Berlin, including the parent LP for this track, also called Lust for Life and The Idiot. "Lust for Life" turned the classic Motown beat (that bassline is everywhere in Pop and Rock and can be traced back to The Supremes "You Can't Hurry Love"). "Lust for Life" is probably Iggy's best-known track because it's just so fun. And since it came out in Punk Rock's big year (1977) it was largely associated with the early UK Punk movement (even though Iggy is from the US).
So, while the song it from 1977, this video is from twenty years later and the iconic 1996 Trainspotting film soundtrack. At this point, Iggy was well into middle-age, but still couldn't find his shirt. I'm not sure I've ever seen him wearing a shiert, actually. LOL This was the original version of the song, but it became a much bigger hit 20 years after it came out because of the success of Trainspotting (the film that gave us Ewan MacGregor). The song and film were both inspired by heroin abuse (good call, Amber!), as Iggy was cleaning up in Berlin when he teamed up with Bowie for his two best albums Lust for Life and The Idiot. He's commonly associated with Bowie, but his own brand of Art Rock is more chaotic, for sure. Try "The Passenger" or the original version of "China Girl" next.
Now y'all need to check out some EARLY Roxy Music for a fuller picture of 70s Art Rock. I recommend "Virginia Plain", "Pyjamarama", or "Ladytron" to start with.

Iggy has always been at his best musically when he's just purely being an agent of chaos. He's done some good "mainstream" stuff, mostly in collaboration with Bowie, but his classic stuff, both solo and with the Stooges, has been when he just throws the rule book out the window and goes for it. He's also incredibly intelligent and well-read. I'd love the chance to just hang out with him, smoking some weed, having a few drinks, and talking about whatever. There will never be another Iggster. Period.

As the kids today would say, Iggy Pop is an entire vibe. Like someone else said previously in the comments, though the song talks about that wild rocker lifestyle, it's ultimately about putting an end to that ( at least the drugs part) and embracing sobriety. Though the song was released in the 70s, this music video was made in '96 for the movie "Trainspotting", which is about a group of young men in Scotland struggling, with all caps, to also find sobriety. I've always loved the upbeat vibe of the song. It's a great driving song, too; just dont speed, because the song might make you want to.

I highly recommend Shades and Candy by Iggy Pop & Kate Pearson from the B-52'S, both from the album in the 80’s. I saw him with The Pretenders and his show is amazing. He & Bowie can imitate each others voices perfectly and he tells about them covering each other in the studio in the 70s when one was too hung over. He then did Let’s Dance & you couldn’t tell it wasn’t Bowie. Great show.

Iggy!!!! Ahhh. This album introduced me to punk in 1977, ... I was 15 ! I got it because Bowie was such a big part of it and was helping to promote it on tv. The Stooges (Iggy's initial band) were one of the biggest influences in punk... going back to the late 60s. He is pretty known for cutting loose .... like no inhibition dancing, not really dancing, but expressing. He is being pretty fun in this video( for the movie trainspotting) and he has plenty of fun songs. But look again at the lyrics. He is pretty deep in most of his songs. He is definitely a serious artist and his music has lots of different moods. The album Lust for Life is incredibly rich. Turn Blue and Some Weird Sin are 2 of my favorite songs. And he actually has a great voice. He has a huge, wonderful catalog of work. Good, good music. He is a force. Raw power. But let's not forget : Search and Destroy, Five foot One, Eggs on My Plate, Pumping for Jill, Bang-Bang, Real Wild Child, Repo Man(theme song)....He also wrote David Bowie's hit, China Girl. The list goes on and on. A Legend!

Pop and Bowie were very good friends. In the years 1976 - 1978 they both lived in Berlin, at times even sharing a flat. Bowie produced Iggy's albums The Idiot and Lust for Life, wrote most of the music on Lust for Life, played keyboards and piano and in some songs his background vocals can be heard very clearly. I love both Iggy and David!

Iggy is definitely a character! He’s considered the grandfather of punk. He was big in the mid to late 70s and early 80. He has kind of stayed in the music scene through the years still releasing a lot of music but not at his earlier popularity. He had several big collaborations such as David Bowie but in more recent years with Green Day and Ke$ha.

This man is LEGENDARY! He's considered the godfather of punk! BTW, he and Bowie recorded the same song, "China Girl", at different times because they composed it together (both are worth to have a look at, but I'd suggest you start with Iggy's version first). Also, Iggy's "Real Wild Child", "Little Know It All" and "The Passenger" are a blast! He guested in a song by Peaches called "Kick It" too, of which the video is really fun to watch, and he also has a couple of other interesting duets with some other 'special guests' for the songs "Well Did You Evah!" and "Candy". I won't reveal who because I don't want to spoil it ;)
