angie mango What makes you think it is sponsored by Rode? It is not sponsored by anyone. I had to purchase all of the equipment myself. The Airstash was at the time of filming the *ONLY* way to get audio recorded on an external recorder using an SD card on to your iOS device *without* using a computer. And as of today, it is still the best solution.
I found this very helpful. Haters are sad people who love to slap a dislike on smart content they didn't make themselves, I fear. It happens on my videos too (where the sound isn't perfect, but I'm working on it). I think we end up at the point of realising that no matter what we do, some are going to try a smackdown. Ignore them and know that you've done something cool to help those who are willing to accept the help. That's how I think about it anyway. Good for you, putting yourself out there and helping other people try to improve what they do. I appreciate it!
Thank you, thank you! I was about to give up on this app. because of its infuriating lack of instructions; No overview, for starters. Your vid is a great help.
Very informative. I went ahead and amazon primed the Behringer, and a mic and cord. I plan on using the mic set up with my ipad and airplay you tube karaoke songs thru my apple TV. I'm not really looking to record but this looks like the best way to use the apple technology for some family fun, karaoke style. Let me know if you have any other suggestions...
G'Day mate. We have never experienced any crashes or lost files and have been using this for a few months now and recorded hours of audio with it. We had it running for over an hour on an iPad, iPhone and iPad mini for this shoot and it worked flawlessly on all three devices. That's just out experience with the app. Hope it helps.
The iRig is working great with the mobile "studio" I've cobbled together. And it saved me from buying a new mic. Thanks! And thanks for the great tutorials.
This is a great video. Thank you very much. I am researching the best mike to record vocals on my iPad Pro for my church choir during the quarantine. This really helped!
Most excellent job. This tutorial is well organized and delivers valuable information in a short sitting. This will be a great help to our student radio station. Great job!
Some of these days I will ask you about how to set a pro recording studio like at home using an ipad. Thank you. I think you are the right person to be asked.
This is a very clear explanation done at good pace to follow. I appreciated you showing different ways because I am looking for a way to record better, and this is informative & practical. Thanks.
Hi there, a really great review that should have many more views. I have a good question, it is now a year later since you filmed this, ... is there a truly wireless way to record audio on my iPad ? So a mic that is Bluetooth, and some sort of receiver that plugs into the iPad ? ( I would love to see a 100% wireless version ) that records real-time audio into the iPad WHILE it records video. Just wondering if you have ever seen something like this ? Thanks and thanks for your great video review !
I solve many problems with your tutorials. Tks. Now I have one question. Is it possible use the same Ipad which I use to connect duet 2 to make video os my performance at the same time? If not, can you tell me how I can solve the problem of record a video simultaneously of me singing and playing ?
Thank you very much. Loved the video and clear instructions. A question though: My mixer has mics and some other inputs going through it. The master output connected to an audio interface, while the stereo out connected to a digital recorder. Now, I would like to feed all the mixed signal from my mixer into the ipad/iphone while recording a video. How can I do that? Can I just connect it to a headphone amp using a ( 3.5mm 4 conductor TRRS Male to 3.5mm TRS Microphone Input Jack with built-in Attenuator) from kvconnection? (I have a 4 output headphone amp connected to the phone output).
Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing this. One question. How did you hook up your Rodes Lav mic to the mixer? What other accessories would I need to do this?
Yes you can record the input level on the app itself (Rode Rec is the best) and on the input device if using an Apogee Mic or Behringer Q502 USB mixer.
I watched another TH-cam video that a Professional Sound dude use the Rode smartLav with the Rode Rec PAID version (about $6) and the bells in whistle within the Rode Rec paid version help resolve the issues of the peaks (called clipping). Its funny that in this review here, the guy spent all this money on all this gear and couldn't pay $6 for the paid software that is suppose to handle most of the issue he claimed the analog mics produce.
@NOWitsOKto - we are using the paid version in this video. The only thing that resolves clipping is setting your levels correctly so the audio does not peak, and is not something specific to RodeRec, paid or free. If you are referring to 'limiting' this is certainly not a completely reliable way to avoid clipping.
fantastic.... n heres my query.... while shooting an iphone video is there a way to get in a stereo input in realtime.... Purpose : need to record a music video demo and trying to avoid tranferring video to editor n replacing the i[hone audio track with the high wuality audio track
Just stumbled across this video. Well done! Quick question. I have a Rode NT1 and a Behringer X302US. I'm trying to determine the connections you used with your 502. What output did you use from the 502? Aweseome job again with the video.
A really great review - covers all the input methods for an iPad. No silly nonsense and waffle - just really good information. There are better usb interfaces on the market than the Behringer - I wouldn't say that this Behringer was a " best buy". Additionally : Now there's the iRig HD mic which connects straight to the lightning port - wasn't available when this video was produced, and the iRig Pro interface for connecting other mics to the lightning port.
Thanks a lot Paul. And you are right! We are about to produce our 2015 guide and the iRig Mic HD and iRig Pro along with many many more will be featured :-)
Appreciate the video. Quick question...I record all my stuff from my iphone and I wanted to be able to record with a better mic (plugged into the headphone jack) than the built in one. Is that possible? I was definitely looking at the Rode SmartLav. Any other tips/advice with my circumstance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again. Cheers.
The SmartLav is definitely much better than the built in mic for recording dialogue but no matter how good the mini jack microphone is, it just can't compete with using the 30-pin or Lightning connector with something like the Apogee Mic (they are about to release a new version which records at 96Khz). Check out our iRig Pro Review as this is the best iOS audio recording solution I have used: iRig Pro Review - Unboxing and Epic Demo | IK Multimedia iOS Audio/MIDI Interface
I use shou recorder which records your screen. As you can see in my videos I do live commentaries not voice overs. I Need better audio so will it do live or do you have to use rode?
Hi great video, so if I wanted to just plug it directly into my iPhone or iPad I can use iTunes to get the audio off right? Then I need to convert it into WAV or the like as I want to incorporate it into my website.. What software can I use to do that? Do I need a mixer Thanks
Hi Samir. Thanks for the feedback! Would love to help but what do you mean by "if I wanted to just plug it directly into my iPhone..." What is "it"? And yes you can use iTunes to import audio files from Rode Rec app. Also Rode Rec will let you export in whatever format you want: WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC etc. If it is for a website you probably don't want uncompressed WAV files as they are so big. MP3 or AAC would be more suitable for your website.
Thanks for quick reply ,I have a panasonic hdc sd90 Camcorder which I am using for the hd video with same problem will the air stash solve this problem as well it sounds like the perfect solution ,also once in iMovie can you cancel video audio and align the claps spikes too zoom audio too sync sorry too keep asking questions but I am tearing my hair out trying to simplify making a vid thanks again ,I will wait for your air stash tutorial
TNice tutorials man is so good at explanation ...since I have been watcNice tutorialng soft soft tutorials , tNice tutorials is my first ti to really understand it . I love soft
In most of the video u use a rode lav and the mixer into an ipad with rode rec, right? How are you hooking your lav into themixer? If you dont mind.... i love this video and hope to use one of these options thanks so much
Yes I do normally use the Rode Lav (not Smartlav) for all my pieces to camera hooked up to the Behringer Xenyx Q502USB mixer via an XLR chord. I then run the Mixer into either my iPhone, or iPad using the USB to Lightning cable from Apple or sometimes straight into a Laptop or Desktop using the Mixers included USB cable. Hope this helps you out :)
Thank you for this fantastic overview! I film using an iPhone 5. I have the Audio-technica ATR2100-USB connected with the iRig PRE but when I filmed with the mic at a 3-4 ft distance, the sound was not good - echos and unclear. I teach yoga and move around a lot in my videos - is there a wireless lavalier mic you recommend? I don't want to have a black cord in my all white video backgrounds. Thank you!
Thanks so much for this informative,well-produced tutorial. I'm a teacher who is having his students make short movie documentaries and iIwant to make my own example to show them first, using my iPad 3.. Since I'm also a musician using Garageband on iPad the Apogee mic sounds the way to go. This is a super example of the way a tutorial should be. Thank you! (Shame we didn't find out your name, though!)
Hello. Excellent informative and clear video. Can you recommend a wireless mic to use with iphone 5 to record yoga videos? Having trouble finding something. Many thanks.
Epic Tutorials for iPhone, iPad and iOS with these mics do u have to have an iOS device also will I be able to record on screen to bc I play mobile games
So how does this equipment provided power into the iPad why you recording, And editing? How is the iPad receiving external power During lengthy sessions? Really great , informative presentation ...I hope you'll be able to answer the questions. Thanks, Chas
Hesynergy I’m by no means an expert but what I’d recommend is getting a deep cycle car battery 12v, inverter to DC to AC power, and some extension cords. This way you can plug a microphone, iPad and two more devices into it if need be and go on for a very long time.
That's fine that you WON'T be needing it :) It is only there for people who use a field recording like the popular Zoom H4N and want to import from an SD directly on to their iPad without using a computer. Thanks so much for your feedback. Appreciate it.
Great video - 2 years later it still applies which speaks to the video (the positive) and apples 🍎 "refuse to improve " technology (the negative). I use Apple as little as possible but because I am in the advertising industry and do a lot of creative pic/video "stuff", my as little as possible is 1/3 of my device load (device load? I just made that term up...I think). Anyway, thank you sir
can you export recorded audio from Rode to another app such as a DAW like garageband? Im thinking of buying an ipad for making music but i want to make sure it will be versatile enough, i want to be able to play synths, record audio and make/mix a song without touching a computer.
Great tutorial, and informative about some products I wasn't aware of. I was hoping you would have included an explanation of how to get recorded audio into the computer for editing in post. Is there a way to move the files via iTunes, or do they have to be uploaded? Large audio files would be so much easier to move via connecting my iPhone to my Mac using iTunes, but I don't see a way to do it.
The best method is to use iTunes and access the audio files via the iTunes File Sharing Section available under the 'Apps' tab. Rode Rec supports iTunes file sharing.
I do some amateur voice acting and don't own a laptop, but own an iPad. I'm just not sure if you can control the microphone input on an app and I have to yell sometimes. Do you know any app that lets me control that? This method of using an iPad could work for casual speaking, but I'm not sure if I could use something like an iPad when yelling because it may result in terrible peaks if I can't control the input.
I will be looking out for it. I am making videos on my iPhone 5 and I am not happy with the audio. Looking for good external microphones for my iPhone 5
Great video! But I have a question. I want to use the Behringer mixer with my iphone 5. But I want to record the video and the audio simultaniously just using the camera app. I don't want to edit the audio and video together after. Is it possible?
Sorry to sound thick - but once you havre the vocal recording - how do you match it up to the visual aspect of your video. I am trying to record my daughter singing so I need good sound and visual recording capture? Advice is much appreciated since i am in the process of purchasing the Apogee mic and using this with an iPhone 7 Plus and Rode rec as in your tutorial? (which was fab by the way). Thank you
+Colette Hobson hi. You don't sound thick at all. If you connect the Apogee Mic (or any other compatible mic) to your iOS device and launch the camera app, any video you shoot will use the audio from the mic and it will be synced automatically for you 🙂
Great tutorial! Recently I purchased a Sony Nex 700 Rh cinema camera. As you are probably aware add ons such as external audio , rigs and so forth can be expensive. However I have an IPad Mini as well as a 27 in IMac loaded with Logic Pro and of course Final Cut. My question is while I now know how to use my I Pad mini to record external audio thanks to you I was wondering if there is anyway I can use my IPad Mini as an external monitor for my Sony fs 700. The LED screen is quite cumbersome on this model although the camera itself is fantastic. I was hoping to save some money by utilizing the Mini as a field monitor which I can attach to my rig. Any suggestions? Regards Shane
Yes Voice Record Pro is excellent! Highly recommended. Apogee MetaRecorder is my overall favourite, but VRP is more feature rich but the interface isn't as nice.
I love your videos! Forgive me, I'm a very new film maker learning everything on my own. (and on TH-cam, LOL) I wanted to ask (hope it's not a stupid question) how do you use Filmic Pro and the Rode Smart Lav together on your Iphone? Can you? I'm assuming you'll also have to download the Rode app? I have an Iphone 4s and want to make a mini documentary using just the iphone's apps. Or do I need another apparatus (Iphone, Ipad) for the sound mic and app? Any thoughts, suggestions, help appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks for a very helpful tutorial. I've just found out that a new SmartLav+ came out this month, July 2014! It's £10 more but according to RODE has a better mic, cable and jack, so much better sound quality.
Is it possible to use other USB audio inputs such as M-Audio Pro? Also can the Air Stash handle up to 128GB? On Amazon I saw there is an 8GB and 16GB version, but in the product info it says it can store up to 128GB, so I'm a little confused.
Do you have a suggestion for microphone to increase audio when recording a Facebook LIVE stream? The purpose would be to increase audio during board meetings when roughly 10 individuals are present and speaking at different volumes but more than that, capturing speakers voices more loudly. The microphone on my Iphone 7 or Ipad don't create a loud enough volume for viewers to hear (and I have tried my laptop which doesn't work well enough either). Any suggestions on what microphone would work well to improve audio during a Facebook LIVE stream would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks in advance! Great video, by the way!
+Bertrand Laurence It certainly would be possible, but I have not tested a direct line in to the headphone jack for quality. You may get better results taking the line out from the mixer into an iOS compatible audio interface like the Apogee One (amzn.to/1ZxVFAa) or PreSonus iTwo (azon.ly/u5QJsF) - both of which the Lightning input over the headphone jack.
+Epic Tutorials for iPhone, iPad, and iOS Thanks!. I am trying to turn my iphone into a good sampler/trigger. Though they are some good iphone mics, it is nice to have the options of a direct sound.

Hi, Thanks for the very informative video. Do you know of any way to use a Bluetooth headset to record during a video on Ios7? Maybe there are apps that can do this? I use my Bluetooth headset with Skype when I teach but would like to use it to record my video as well. Any suggestion?
Great information, very well produced. Love it. Question: I have a Mackie 1202 from the 1980s; would that be able to enable me to use an XLR mic (Shure SM58) on my iPhone 5S? Obviously it's not digital, so maybe it belongs in the trash. I don't have an iPad to get the Behringer.
+Robert Gabriel Thanks for the feedback. Your Mackie 1202 would not allow you to use your SM58 (great mic) with your iPhone 5s. The Behringer does work with an iPhone, not just iPad. You would need one of the following iOS compatible audio interfaces to connect your SM58 to your iPhone (from least to most expensive and I have used them all with an iPhone 5s): Behringer Q502 - amzn.to/1OqLDOA iRig Pro - amzn.to/1WS8i9K PreSonus iTwo - amzn.to/1OqLIlA Apogee One - amzn.to/1WS8jKB
Hi Epic Tutorials. Can you please teach me how to record video using external microphones step by step? When iI start recording video I don't know how to turn off the internal microphone. I bought duet2 and also bought rode rec as you suggested. Step by step please
So I have a condensor mic that I want to run through my presonus audiobox 96 and into my ipad pro 12.9 via lightning to usb camera adapter. My question is, will I need an additional power supply to work the phantom power or will the ipad provide enough power?
Hey thanks a lot. I have a Videomic go and I want to position the mic closer to the subject I download the app and now I can't seem to get it to work with my mic. Is it not compatible or is there some process to "install" the mic to get it to work. Thanks!
I want to record an interview from an incoming phone call on my iPhone 5. Can I wire the speaker output from the iPhone jack directly into my laptop, or would I still need to have a microphone close up to the speaker on the iPhone to pick up the signal?
Thank you. I have to revisit the video. I waste a lot of joey on things that almost work... problem now is getting files from Rode recorder in iPad across to iTunes or files on the "desktop" without going to the cloud or outside the iPad. etc... Why not? I wonder. I should not have to go outside iPad because I have all software... record, edits an mix in the iPad. Will resume my education this weekend. Grateful for all support and videos. Great.
Hi, great introduction. I'm about to buy the Behringer Q520USB mixer for my iPad Pro. Wonder if you have any ideas if iPad Pro can provide enough power for it? I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and the iPad Pro does not have enough power for it. All the best and many thanks.
+Calvin Fu Hi Calvin. Do you mean the Q502? And no, the Behringer series including the Q1202 all need their supplied power supplies plugged in for the iPad to be able to use it (same goes for iPhone).
+Epic Tutorials for iPhone, iPad, and iOS Thanks for your reply. For my Focusrite 2i2, it does not have a AC power supply while I just found out the Q502USB has it. I believe it should have no problem regarding the power supply. I bought a Q502USB online and looking forward receiving it and having it connected to my iPad Pro. Thanks again.
Hi Calvin. You should be able to use a powered USB hub to supply power to your Focusrite 2i2. Have you tried that? If you have one lying around give it a go or see if you can borrow one before purchasing as I make no guarantees. Thanks.
+Epic Tutorials for iPhone, iPad, and iOS no, I don't have a powered USB hub and so I haven't tried that. Understand that there are no guarantees, like your tutorial explaining various ways to use a mic with the iOS devices, thanks
I gave your video a like for all the content you put in the description more than for the actual vid.... some was hard to make out what you were saying. Rode somethin? Thanks for putting this out here though
How about just taking the analog audio out of the little mixer? Some mixers don’t have a usb, so using audio cables from the mixer via an adapter to mic in on the iPhone seems like one more option not mentioned here.
I can't imagine why anyone would down vote this video. It's so helpful.
That's nice of you to say Synthia. We hope it helped :-)
Yes, very helpful. Thank you!
I agree can't understand the few thumbs down. I wonder if someone just hit the button by mistake lol because this was clearly a helpful video.

Hi Epic, I have read some reviews about the Rode rec for IOS crashing and losing files, etc. How has your experience been?
This an excellent sharing video, thanks!
Thank you, thank you! I was about to give up on this app. because of its infuriating lack of instructions; No overview, for starters. Your vid is a great help.
Amazing tutorial, much appreciation for this video :)
+Nick Ackerman glad it helped you out.
TH-cam served me this clip more than four years after it was made because its evergreen content offers exceptionally helpful techniques.
What would you recommend for recording lectures while I'm in the middle of a class? Maybe with the iPhone inside my pocket?
Thanks so much for the continued support. Really appreciate it and it makes us want to keep making videos :)

Thanks a lot David. Great to hear feedback. Glad it was helpful.
I need a mic to use while I'm video taping using the iPad. How is that accomplished and what is the best mic.
What’s the best recording mic for enhancing my iPhone’s mic so that I can record music videos? Thank you!

Yes you can record the input level on the app itself (Rode Rec is the best) and on the input device if using an Apogee Mic or Behringer Q502 USB mixer.
Rode Rec allows you to adjust the input level via a nice slider. Also mics like the Apogee Mic 96k have a volume knob on the mic itself.

Hello. Excellent informative and clear video.
Can you recommend a wireless mic to use with iphone 5 to record yoga videos? Having trouble finding something.
Many thanks.
***** Hi Rebecca. Sorry but I have not delved into the world of wireless microphones, so can't help you there.
Epic Tutorials for iPhone, iPad and iOS Thanks you anyway :)
Epic Tutorials for iPhone, iPad and iOS with these mics do u have to have an iOS device also will I be able to record on screen to bc I play mobile games
beginners. Thank you so much! x
So how does this equipment provided power into the iPad why you recording, And editing?
How is the iPad receiving external power During lengthy sessions?
Really great , informative presentation ...I hope you'll be able to answer the questions.
Thanks,
Chas
Hesynergy I’m by no means an expert but what I’d recommend is getting a deep cycle car battery 12v, inverter to DC to AC power, and some extension cords. This way you can plug a microphone, iPad and two more devices into it if need be and go on for a very long time.
What is the best recording software for IOS according to your opinion for recording audiobooks.
Do you think the internet voice app is sufficient
Yes a GoPro Hero Black for the front camera and a Canon 5D mk ii for the iPad shots.
Epically clear_ and thoroughly explained ...however the wireless device ??? I'm a little fuzzy I think I WONT be needing that.
thank you
That's fine that you WON'T be needing it :) It is only there for people who use a field recording like the popular Zoom H4N and want to import from an SD directly on to their iPad without using a computer.
Will these work for games?
can you export recorded audio from Rode to another app such as a DAW like garageband? Im thinking of buying an ipad for making music but i want to make sure it will be versatile enough, i want to be able to play synths, record audio and make/mix a song without touching a computer.
Is it possible to use the Apple camera kit and the Audi Technica 2020 USB mic?
Great tutorial! What tablet stand is that?
2 year old video, no less phenomenal.
+Gabe Goldiamond Thank you Gabe. We will be releasing an updated guide in Dec which will make things more current. Appreciate the comment.

It sure is! And for even better results use Filmic Pro.
These, as I understand are options to record only audio on an Apple device. Can I use these mics to record audio when making a video on iPhone?
Very informative, thanks for the tutorial well worth watching, by the way your voice is well modulated and perfect for voice overs etc.
Thanks Robert. Appreciate the feedback.
If you connect the Apogee Mic (or any other compatible mic) to your iOS device and launch the camera app, any video you shoot will use the audio from the mic and it will be synced automatically for you 🙂
Man your rock this review. Brilliant. I will be keeping a close watch. Keep rocking the world with your talent man.
Thanks Punk Rooster. You too.
Thakns so much - what's the ipad adaptor for the Apogee Mic called?
Nice......a thorough and succinct tutorial ! Thanks.
Thanks Robert. I'm glad it was of use.
Could I connect a Behringer C1 USB to my iPhone 4S? Thanks for your answers :)
I don't know I'm sorry. I have not been able to test the C1.
Excellent video! A+! Great info, very clearly and succinctly presented. Thanks!!
Thanks very much Mark. Kind of you to say.
Amazing job on everything about this video!
Thanks so much for the great info
Thanks for this good explanation. What do you think about app Voice Record Pro? Whats better? Thank you very much.
Yes Voice Record Pro is excellent! Highly recommended. Apogee MetaRecorder is my overall favourite, but VRP is more feature rich but the interface isn't as nice.
Appears that MetaRecorder is a little bit better than VRP, but I think that these 2 apps is good :) Thank you very much.
You definitely deserve more subscribers.
That's kind of you to say.
Thanks!
Thanks for the positive feedback. Glad to hear our videos help. Yes you can use Filmic Pro and Rode Smart Lav together! Happy filming :)
Thanks for a very helpful tutorial. I've just found out that a new SmartLav+ came out this month, July 2014! It's £10 more but according to RODE has a better mic, cable and jack, so much better sound quality.
I love your tutorials. Thanks for your efforts
Nice. Would it be possible to take a line out ,from the mixer, for example, into the iphone for direct recording?
No, sorry.
You would need one of the following iOS compatible audio interfaces to connect your SM58 to your iPhone (from least to most expensive and I have used them all with an iPhone 5s):
Behringer Q502 - amzn.to/1OqLDOA
iRig Pro - amzn.to/1WS8i9K
PreSonus iTwo - amzn.to/1OqLIlA
Apogee One - amzn.to/1WS8jKB
+Epic Tutorials for iPhone, iPad and iOS Thank you so much for a very thorough and helpful answer!!
what do you recommend to get for recording songs? like if im going to rap what stuff should i get?
You should get this: amzn.to/1rvEEGq - you can watch our review here th-cam.com/video/WYOUNkVZMvY/w-d-xo.html - it is a great mic!
Using the Berhinger mixer and the camera jack can you use two microphones and record in L R stereo and send stereo to your iOS app?
Great tutorial and advice!
Thanks Landon, appreciate the feedback. Glad to hear it helped.
Hey thanks a lot. I have a Videomic go and I want to position the mic closer to the subject I download the app and now I can't seem to get it to work with my mic. Is it not compatible or is there some process to "install" the mic to get it to work. Thanks!
Great information
I want to record an interview from an incoming phone call on my iPhone 5. Can I wire the speaker output from the iPhone jack directly into my laptop, or would I still need to have a microphone close up to the speaker on the iPhone to pick up the signal?
Excellent, Thank-you.
. Good job. Comprehensive enough for my needs +. TY.
John Cahill I am glad to hear it helped John. Thanks.
+Epic Tutorials for iPhone, iPad, and iOS
Thanks for your reply.
Excellent I understood this and am not a TechHead, very helpful cheers.
Andy White Thanks Andy.
great video. Is it possible to record video while using an separate app like Rode Rec to record the audio?
