I think that's called 'Cruiser bum. i get that stance when I drive my Landcruiser any distance from the craptastic drivers seat, you can walk it off but it's real.
I love the concept of the 70 series. Basic, strong, no frills.. it's just got aircon and rough as guts to drive. I just never got my head around the pricing. To me the 70 series should be the Corolla of the 4wd world. I understand why people pay the money for 200/Y62 level of refinement. It's unfortunate the 70 isn't viable in other countries apart from Au and South Africa, which is probably why we're paying 80k for simplicity. Blows my mind a ute designed for the mines and farms are priced so far out of touch with the public
Considering the high demand (private owners in AU and SA is a small percentage compared to mining, agriculture, military and militant groups) and no direct competitor and the high quality build all combine for that high price
Definitely not designed for the mines, never was and never will be. The L/C maybe proven and tested here in Australia as are many other vehicles but not designed specifically for Australia. The L/C and other vehicles are designed for a world market with only a very few minor differences if any. The fact is Australia has always had a good following of manufactures testing and proving their vehicles here and if they up to snuff here then it will very likely be good anywhere else. Its easy to say designed for Australian conditions because it sounds great and makes us feel proud but many manufactures use that phrase albeit to suit their country all too often. BUT IT IS THE BEST MEDIUM DUTY UTE PERIOD AND I for one would give my left nut and kidney to have one.
Visited Uganda a while back but was astounded at the sheer number of them on the roads. They mainly get them second hand from South Africa. From tourism companies to military, from NGO charities to hotel operators, everybody wants to own one. Their resale value is crazy stable there.! Wonderful cars
I`ve had my hzj78 for 20 yrs . Its on its third gearbox and 2nd rear diff at 560000 ks, motor is still all original apart from new injectors last year . It does everything and if you happen to hit a roo its not the end of your holiday .
Not for me now, but reminiscent of the Government FJ45’s I drove through impossible conditions in the Southern Highlands of PNG in the 1970’s. I once turned one into an articulated vehicle breaking the chassis on both sides behind the cab. They had an enormous 6 cylinder petrol engine based in an old US straight six that consumed fuel at an enormous rate, but could go almost anywhere with a low range that conquered the worst terrain, slopes and mud. This series 70 looks like pure luxury compared to the cars I used to drive. Great review. Thanks!
If you really want to see a Toyota that’s gone soft , take a look at the Tundra . I’ve owned many of them from 2000 on up to the 2016 that I drive now . The new 2022 has gone from leaf springs to coils , twin turbo V6 , aluminum box , and so on . They even dropped tow hooks . The 70 series isn’t sold here in Canada except for the underground mining industry . If this truck was available here they wouldn’t be able to slap them together fast enough to keep up with the demand. ,
Same here in the USA. I have a 2015 tundra and was hoping for a decent payload upgrade. Disappointed I’m buying a straight axle one ton Cummins next. I’m done with Toyota. I can finally afford to make a few repairs to have a capable truck on my farm
The reason Toyota hasn't changed the 70 series much over the years is they simply work!!! Nothing fancy but proven to do the job and do it reliably over and over again, I love them personally just think they are over priced!!!! Out dated yes but I don't necessarily see that as a negative
I agree with you 100%. Great rig but for the money I don't see the value unless you really use it what it's made for and that is to be abused off-road and flogged day in and day out. No other vehicle handles that punishment
They're a great bus and I love the concept of a simple rugged vehicle, but I do wish they'd widen them in line with the 200/300 series - they're 4 inches narrower than a Patrol cab chassis, and are indeed narrower than most small utes. That and the fact they're 20k overpriced for what they are...
If you are making complaints about this ute, you can't afford one! My current 2019 has done 60,000kms and I ordered my new one in July this year. Its a 12 month wait. So, you pay more than its value. And if they retain their value is because you can not wait a year for a new one. A car who fails like any other, but had the advantage of a huge aftermarket parts and used ones. Any 4wd 5 tonne truck can do the same and cost less.

I have heard on a few occasions that the fuel capacity variations between the models is due to manipulation of the under floor layouts to fit in the DPF and exhaust system.
I think it was in part to gain the 5 star ANCAP rating, removing the rear fuel tank & rear end collision risk of spill and fire. Thinner chassis metal too than the older ones I believe.

This winter I scrapped my '04 Cayenne and bought winter tires for the '02 Tacoma 2.7L 4X4 5 speed which has been little used since '08. When I look at a review like this one I start thinking of a full restoration for my eBay purchase from the U.S. 150,000 miles is still relatively new in Toyota years.
I have over 300,000 on my 97 4 x 4 with the 2.7. Many of those miles pulling a 16 ft travel trailer. Now I'd like to rebuild the engine and rear end but can't find a Toyota mechanic capable enough to do it. Still runs great. Bit I think the MAF was giving me problems. Toyota could not diagnose the issue. 150K = barely broke in.
The Sell Pictch of this car is that this is not a car, it's a tool, an heavy duty professional tool, as oposed to other consumer car that can also be use as a tool but don't have the "longer live cycle and durability".... is like going to buy a bosch power tool you can buy the "green line" or the "blue line" ... the LC79 is defenitivly the "blue line"
I have one and it is definitely fit for purpose. That engine pulls from 1200 to 3200 RPM as strong as you need . It does lack most of the modern niceties though.
Old school is a 40 series. The 79 series is a modern designed vehicle built for a purpose, any negatives are opinion only. The engineering is superior to any production vehicle of its type.
I had the HJ47 Land Cruser Pick up will Toyota bring back this version up dated to the 2022 models that are available overseas only left hand drive that I have been able to see . Just wanting to know if there New models will come to Australia with Wrigh Hand Drive moderls in the Pick Up please Can you have any information about this moddle please, Kind Regards John Dickson .
my dad has a j40 (bandeirante) in brazil. Is realy cool see a new version of this car in 2021, infortunily is limited to africa. We love this car and how stong he is
I've been a Toyota bloke all my life no doubt the 79 is a tough reliable truck but the price of it for something so underpowered "stock" and basic I think is a bit ridiculous
If simplicity and robustness are criteria for buying, the leaf-sprung 75 series was unbeatable with fold-down windshield, h55f/h150f gearbox, rugged look of the round headlights, windup windows, ultra spartan interior. Softened up 1999 onwards with front coils, puny gearbox (R151f on 1hz models)…
Dont like the interior, can say with some certainty that you will have some issues if you use a hose to wash the mud and dirt out like I do on my 2019 model. Way too much electronics!! Pitty about the smaller 130L tank. Can be an issue as I use all of the 180l capacity on mine. Do like the idea of cruise control, but mine lives in Low range here in the mountains, so just a nice to have thing for the resupply run once every two months.
Nice review, no sugarcoating the fact that it's still a very basic work and a rough off-road truck, and probably the best in its category... I like the few modern details Toyota have done to the 70 series the last few years, this one is particularly cool but not enough coolness to justify the price tag, I'll rather have the standard one, which already is expensive... Also, one may think it's time to change the design of those side rearview mirrors, they're ugly as hell.
@@CN-vc9bh cause they don’t know how well autos go in difficult terrain…… no gear change necessary, just stick in the boot …… smooth as …. Hill descent or manual selection covers crawling….. absolutely amazing …… started with a 1974 FJ45, been there done that ….Give it a go !
Or when they will fix the rear wheels to be the same width as the front.... Or when they'll implement a working handbrake.... Or update the centre console to be useful.....
I'd really like one of these but they don't sell them in UK. And I can never understand why the rear axle isn't a bit further back and the front and rear track widths are different. If they changed those 2 things it would be 'perfect' within reason.
Do they call it a 70 series, because the design looks like its still from the 70s? Wow 80 thousand dollars for manual movement mirrors. You toyota people are so crazy man lol.
I used to hate these things but then got one for it's payload and now I get it. But you won't get anywhere near that range on the highway. At 110-115 kmh it's more likely to do 16-17 litres per 100km.
Really? With a very gentle right toe, I can just about eek it out to 13 litres per 100 km with my JDM spec GRJ76 and its 4 litre petrol V6. I always figured that the Australian diesel would be miles better…
I do my diesel fuel useage every week with the petrol cost calculator website, I get around 11.6L per 100K's in a VDJ79R 12/2013 Landcruiser with a mix of city & country K's.
@@dustyfarmer what speed on the highway though, at 100kph they aren't too bad but as soon as you start creeping to 110 or higher the fuel use almost doubles because of the gearing
@@tcmx712 That's with 110Kph sections with some up-hill runs. if I put the boot into it it goes up to around 12.5L per 100K's on prolonged high speed highway work. The ones built after 8/16 have the higher 2nd & 5th gear ratio in the gearbox so they should like highway work even more but mine still cruises along nicely. There is no way known you would ever burn double that.
The trouble with late model Hiluxes and Cruisers is they're too long for many garages, particularly for working class people who live in unit blocks. Many working class people are ute buyers. I took a tape measure to the company Hilux at work (the 2wd singlecab tabletop)and blow me down, at five and a half metres, it was exactly the same length as my garage at home. Thanks Toyota! Instead of a ute, I'm opting for my second choice:- a Toyota CH/R hybrid. Ironically, I'm sure a 1990 Hilux would have fitted in there easily.
Every time I have looked at a 4 door Tacoma in a showroom I have turned right off. The things are grossly out of proportion. My '02 Taco single cab, by comparison, looks right, even with a Lear cap on the box.
@@rodcros I always found a certain model of vehicle that was about the right size 30 years ago, has been replaced with bloated equivalents. A current Corolla is larger than a Cressida from the 70's.......it was then Toyota's second largest model. If the Corolla was a person, it's weight gain would warrant a Jenny Craig weight loss diet.
Nah I’ll keep my 2006 Gu St 4.2 cab chassis for a bit longer. Still tows my 6.5 m yellowfin with no problems and more capable off road too. That Front end looks like Fj cruiser.
I agree it’s a purpose built work vehicle but it still has 70 nm less torque than the Hilux. This V8 should be producing at least 180 kw and 550 nm of torque. 1 put of 10 Toyota.
Engine can put more power from factory just look at the 200 series. When the v8 came out in the 70 series I remember looking at the figures and the output was the same as the 100 series Turbo diesel. I did query the sales manager at my local toyota dealer at the time and he kinda did say that it's still using the same manual transmission as the turbo 100 series and the turbo 79 series so I just figured that was the reason for the power output limit.
Toyota just discontinued the sales of the LANDCRUISER 300 series for the American market. I honestly believe the 70 series will be a perfect and affordable replacement for the overly priced and ultra luxurious 200/300 series LANDCRUISER.
No they haven't. They are too tight arse to spend the engineering and plant tooling $ to sort that amongst other things. They get away with it as they have no competition in this market niche. If you are looking to build a tourer look at the Ineos Grenadier coming next year. Will cost more upfront but probably save you more not having to spend money modifying stuff that should come standard from factory.
It doesn't need to be. There is no problem. In practical operation there is no noticeable issue with differing wheel tracks. Where the myth originates is from the dual cab which is often over loaded and this causes light steering and people started saying it was the different wheel track which was causing control issues.
@@adelarsen9776 I believe it’s in off-road conditions is the issue. Since the rear wheels are not following in the same tracks that are created by the front wheels the vehicle is doing more work having to plough four tracks instead of two! The difference is like 100mm so it is not insignificant.
So many questions on why toyota dont sell this in the USA 1. Because it will bankrupt US automakers if they do. 2. You guys already have jeeps there. The jeep gladiator is a knock off 79 series pretty much. 🤗 Enjoy the jeeps you guys and good luck. Ur gonna need it. ✌
No matter how many comments go on about how strong they are and how built to last they are blah blah blah……. The fact of the matter is they are OVER PRICED by at least 40k. With all the old school simplicity and old school features and old school technology should come old school pricing. It’s the government departments that keep buying them and driving up the prices. Without that market I don’t believe we would have them here in Aus either! A 4.5 V8, 150kw, 400 odd Nm, 12ltr/100, @ 80+k. Those numbers in them selves are embarrassing Toyota!!!

Only a Cruiser owner will understand what it’s all about. The rest will be secretly dreaming about it forever..
which is why they watched this video! they can watch my 12 month review on my channel!!
Yep, You can explain it to them, but you can't make them understand it.
Love how in the time codes you go to hit safety and it doesn't exist , fitting for the car
5 star ANCAP rating. It's in there if you watch it.
@@dustyfarmer never said it wasn't! Said the time codes weren't working , just like the five star rating from 10 years ago
it is close to ''it doesn't Breakdown'' or it is very good in terms of reliability which is needed for business or else
Personally I'd prefer a bench seat and higher sides on the load bay
What you called a 79 wagon is really a 76
I love my 79. I hate those beepy driver aids going off and are a distraction when going in tough terrain.
The sooner the black rim craze is over the better
It's a craze only at Toyota. Hasn't taken off anywhere else.
Upgraded suspension with Pedders, turned the Landcruiser into a very enjoyable getaway truck!
They last as long as you can be bothered to drive it
My DC drives really well on ordinary Perelli SUV highway tyres. I never go off road
my dad has a j40 (bandeirante) in brazil.
If you think its underpowered put a 2L in it
@@littlesteve855 🤣🤣 yeah I've got a 2l Hilux on the farm definitely no power house but big price difference
This makes me want to move to Australia. Why can’t we get these in Canada????
Love it. I like to drive and dont need all the tech.
Where can I get on in the USA 🇺🇸
Thank God toyota are keeping with old school work horses , or we just go back to rebuilding the golden oldies
Old school cool for sure
Don't need all that fancy stuff
Dont like the interior, can say with some certainty that you will have some issues if you use a hose to wash the mud and dirt out like I do on my 2019 model. Way too much electronics!!
Pitty about the smaller 130L tank. Can be an issue as I use all of the 180l capacity on mine.
Do like the idea of cruise control, but mine lives in Low range here in the mountains, so just a nice to have thing for the resupply run once every two months.
I love it so, how can I order to buy?
You need to upgrade the clutch if you give it extra beans
Or a 3" TORQIT exhaust as I found out.
Amazing…. Finally got cruise control …….. progress …..
Wonder when they will advance to an automatic box …..?? 😂😂👍
All the bits are in the Toyota parts bin. I Drive a 1991 LJ78 that has an auto as standard!
never because real men and women drive manual
@@CN-vc9bh What about if you only have one leg?

Or when they will fix the rear wheels to be the same width as the front.... Or when they'll implement a working handbrake.... Or update the centre console to be useful.....
LOVE IT..... Too bad it isn't available in the US.....
A lot of money for old school technology! Road and wind noise in cab are irritating. However still a good works horse!
In Saudi Arabia the same one but fully loaded 70 anniversary with twin lockers , winch and freezer /cool box for 60k with 15% sale tax included
With a V8 Diesel ?????
@@c10196 yes and we get the 1gr v6 gas which is cheaper
@@xwhels nice
Fantastic video! I would strongly consider purchasing one of these if they were available in the US.
I'd really like one of these but they don't sell them in UK.
And I can never understand why the rear axle isn't a bit further back and the front and rear track widths are different. If they changed those 2 things it would be 'perfect' within reason.
Regular keys?
Do they call it a 70 series, because the design looks like its still from the 70s? Wow 80 thousand dollars for manual movement mirrors. You toyota people are so crazy man lol.
Not much fun if youre out bush and your electric mirrors stop working
70s?? Let's revisit the 70s and find that 79 cruiser for you that you remember so well.
Love it but does it come in the Troopy?
Yes....... haven't you seen any? Common in NT.
they're a work horse, not a show poney. that vehicle will do a milliom km and more if it's maintained.
@@simonjones5614 the 1hd fte gets about 11.2
I do my diesel fuel useage every week with the petrol cost calculator website, I get around 11.6L per 100K's in a VDJ79R 12/2013 Landcruiser with a mix of city & country K's.
I thought it was the new turbo diesel v6 motor that is also coming out in the new 300 series Landcruiser.
Gosh. I can think of a LOT better vehicles to do some highway miles in..........
Don't think it's designed to be a highway vehicle mate.

these 70's are expensive and old school but they are a very good investment and hold there value
It's not a car you can take off road. It's a tractor that you can drive on the road, so keep your expectations realistic
This vehicle dune bashes in the middle east
Good review but they are absolutely crazy to ask that amount of money.
@@rodcros
I always found a certain model of vehicle that was about the right size 30 years ago, has been replaced with bloated equivalents.
Hey Adam Nissan Discontinued the Y61 UTE AND WAGON in 2016. HA HA
@@mattc699 now nissan is softer than any landcruiser has ifs in the rear, a petrol engine and auto box...is more like a lifted suv
@@mattc699 Not in Gulf Countries. They still sell them as 2022 models.
I agree it’s a purpose built work vehicle but it still has 70 nm less torque than the Hilux. This V8 should be producing at least 180 kw and 550 nm of torque. 1 put of 10 Toyota.
thats cause they detune for reliability..these engine can push out way more power just arent AS reliable
A basic 4x4 at a premium price.
What a joke aye
Do you know how long the waiting list is?
12 months

In Australia since 2008 they all have the V8 turbo diesel.
Nice truck. Wish they were sold in the states.
Pity they cant make the rear wheel base the same width at the front FFS.
That’d be the track!
Toyota just discontinued the sales of the LANDCRUISER 300 series for the American market.
I honestly believe the 70 series will be a perfect and affordable replacement for the overly priced and ultra luxurious 200/300 series LANDCRUISER.
Why not here in the Philippines.
70 thousand for that dang vehicle
If us Americans could get our hands on them, Id have a 79 and a 76 series!
Love these but have they made the rear track the same as the front yet?
No they haven't. They are too tight arse to spend the engineering and plant tooling $ to sort that amongst other things. They get away with it as they have no competition in this market niche. If you are looking to build a tourer look at the Ineos Grenadier coming next year. Will cost more upfront but probably save you more not having to spend money modifying stuff that should come standard from factory.
Check what Norweld company does with these rigs much better then Toyota!
Wow, 6 months servicing schedule is a joke.
So many questions on why toyota dont sell this in the USA
1. Because it will bankrupt US automakers if they do.
2. You guys already have jeeps there. The jeep gladiator is a knock off 79 series pretty much. 🤗
Enjoy the jeeps you guys and good luck. Ur gonna need it. ✌
Does the tech make us rely on the tech too much, I think so. Old school cool
Is there only one turbo
Yes, it’s a single turbo on the V8 in the 70 series.
Those rear springs look sagged down already, she's hanging down in the rear like its got 500Kg in it while empty.
