As an american, it infuriates me that this vehicle is not directly sold in the north american market. One of the best toyotas in production and you can't find them anywhere.

people have had problems with the DPF on these, the front wheels are also further apart than the back wheels (for bigger engine) so toyota cheaped out and just didn't bother widening the back wheel distance either (which some people just get done aftermarket) but those are minor gripes really.
These things have lots of issues, starter motor failure (8 hour job to change it in the V8 valley) Alternators fail in wet or muddy conditions due to being the lowest item in the engine bay. They crab all over the place on any loose surface (sand/mud) due to the narrow rear track not following the front. The park brake is inoperable after a couple of months. All that before you begin on the under powered engine that gobbles fuel like a thirsty camel! Very poor value for money.
This vehicle is just a work of art. I love it. I wish it was sold in the US. All of the things it doesn't have are the things I don't want like lane keep assist, auto start/stop, etc. All of these modern annoyances are gone. And you know it won't be a broken down piece of junk in 4 years and won't appear ugly in 4 years when the "new model" comes out.
I believe you can import a 70series model from 1997, they all from same chassis, the only difference from the new model is interior and tech (mostly ABS and ESP and such) and front bumper and fender and back bumper, and the petrol engine did change after 2009, which was 1FZ-FE and now it's 1GR-FE for the petrol models.
@@yinyangsaladgang8789 Well, where i live we only got diesels after 2019 or 2018, before that it was only V6 Petrol, and they were quite reliable, we live on desert so rust isn't really an issue, most of those who buy LC70 they will use it harshly, because they know it will go back home, unlike a Land Rover, price comparison between LC70 and the new LC300 or LC200 is quite big, and those vehicle doesn't have the clearance or the short wheelbase like LC70 has 😅
You ever wonder why reliable vehicles aren't sold in the US? I'm in the US and most reliable thing u can get are Tacoma's and rangers (old ones not the new ones) god forbid they give us a small diesel in a pickup

Everything pointed out as shortcomings is exactly what keeps you away from repair shops for a really really long time in these vehicles. It's just a robust workhorse and it's magnificent at it.

I have a 2009 76 Series here in the Middle East. As an American, I always wished they would be available in the states. I looked for 2 years to find one here. The pros definitely outweigh the cons. I think the lack of electronics and the simplicity of this vehicle is exactly what it is supposed to be. It was never intended to be a luxury vehicle.
What about the uneven wheel track, underpowered engine, uncomfortable ride, terrible fuel economy, low spring hangers that get hung up in every rut, flex of a brick do you want me to go on?

I own a 2014 76 Cruiser. You have to have a passion for overlanding and travelling the back roads to justify this vehicle. Its dreadful in traffic and ghastly on freeway but once you are in the Bushveld in Africa there is nothing better. It's a beast that stops at nothing. Reliable and unbreakable. Beautiful high ride for game viewing, tows like a dream and rolls over anything in its path. You can pack it to hilt and add a roof rack and pack that too. Add a clamshell rooftop tent and you can sleep wherever you stop whenever you like. The low range and front back lockers with live axels give it an edge over most other SUVs. I did more than half a 4x4 obstacle route before realising I hadn't locked the hubs and actually wasn't in 4x4. Ground clearance is unparalleled. My kids love it, my wife loves to hate it but secretly also loves it. I test drove a Prado and a Fortuner but when I test drove the 76 I couldn't get the smile off my face for days.
Nice honest review 👍 I’ve had two 70series, a 75 and currently 79 series. They haven’t changed much over the yrs , nice and basic but they just do the job they’re made for!

I drove virtually the whole range of Land Cruisers over my working life in forestry, first was the neck breaking FJ40 short wheel base. What I loved with all of them, they were so simple to drive and work on and started every time you turned the key. You couldn't ask for a better off road vehicle. A great review :)
there thirsty lack torque lack hp and are a real let down for a small v8 weak drive train and front and rear wheels aren't even aligned so good luck with mud
Just recently Toyota has become an icon to me, LOOKING BACK at its well earned legacy of overall quality/reliabillity with its 80s through mid 2000's models. Not a 4WD person, I'll agree they were good on that niche in the 70's. My admiration tends to drop off post 2010 as they've seemed to enter a tech-miasma that so many cars are caught up in today, thanks ESG. I'm amazed that Toyota has zeroed-in on that era and essence with this reiteration of the Land Cruiser. All the more reason to celebrate this 70th anniversay... but why no ENGINE review???
What a classic and solid looking vehicle! Has that rugged charm, history of its lineage, legendary reliability and off road prowess. An all around great vehicle and this new one looks stunning.
They need to be selling this in the USA instead of the Mall Crawlers the 4Runner and Landcruiser’s have become. Love this vehicle. Old school simple and capable. I’d buy one in an instant! Great review.
bullshit.. as a current owner of a v8 78 series toyota and a past owner of nissan patrol .2 turbo diesels i can confidently state that the patrols are a less worrisome tougher beast to own.. patrols have solid axle front and rear, a truely bullet proof 6 cyclinder strait 6 diesel (not as powerful as the LC V8 but good torque where it counts down low) far less troublesome with oil leaks and less tempromental with oil , engine sensors etc and general practicality like the starter and alternator positioning. Inedpendent suspension all around, so a way better ride and articulation combination than the 78 series. Not so polished inside but it sitll has everything you need and it stays working, apart from maybe the electric window regulators every 20 years or so. in saying that, i love the exrta overtaking power of the 78, and also teh sound but its nowhere near as durable as the patrol turbo 6. toyotas are popular because dealers are everywhere in australia, they havnt evolved much and parts and repair knowledge is widespread because the model is so old. but they have heaps of probs like rust in the roof, shit paint quality, sesitive to bad fuel, deadly weak brakes and handbrake straight from the factory, a widowmaker crash rating, terrible economy esp for how little power they make crap seats and general comfort/mirrors and all the things that could easily be fixed.. in sayting that though, i still like it.. but only cos there are few other well supported vehicles that are credible as opposition..
God I wish this was available in the US. They wouldn't be able to make enough of these. All the classic stuff that you mentioned as not acceptable in 2022 (instruments, etc.) are why I would want it.

The government in collaboration with local manufacturers' influence of Ford and GM, in a bid to protect local content, don't want you Americans driving certain foreign offroad capable vehicles, because they know, if allowed into the country, most Americans will prefer them over Ford and GM, which is not good for your economy.
Nice balanced review. It brought teary eyes as I relive some of the adventures with my old 1977 FJ40 short wheelbase: 4.2 Lts gasoline engine , 6 cylinders and no more than 125HP. It drank more than a sailor (~20lts/100km) and stiff as a 2x4. But I love it and we did over 200,000km. The word "indestructible" comes to mind. Bravo Toyota.
Great thorough review of one of my favourites. The highlight for me was demonstrating getting in/out of the vehicle, if limited to the back seat. From a disability perspective, and there's lots of us older arthritic folks out here, it would be great to see more reviews where the drivers seat is all the way back, steering wheel all the way forward and up, drivers door fully open, and seeing the reviewer climb in and out. My disability is progressing so my days with my XC70 are numbered, and I'm looking to find an alternative, maybe a van, or a bus??? Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work.
Wanted a 70’s series all my life. I had to go with the Lexus GX because I can’t get the 70’s series here in the states. I will be forever sour about the whole subject. Beautiful rig.
Hey man not sure where abouts in the US you are but there’s tons of jdm import dealerships! I just imported a kzn185 hilux surf and the place I got it from had a few 80 series land cruisers, prados, surfs, hiace 4x4 vans etc.
Not going anywhere just yet. Only thing likely to happen is an Engine upgrade in late 2023 or early 2024 to meet Euro 6. Out goes the old V8 oiler & in comes a likely single turbo variant of the LC300's new 6cyl unit to meet the Euro 6 mandate here in Jan 24. Might undergo a major refresh as well.
@@brocksinclair66 they may not be able to due to Euro 6 now being mandated in Australia in Jan 2024. All new vehicles including 4WD's etc must meet Euro 6 . Diesels will need AdBlue , Eolys or an equivalent additive. Petrol vehicles here will likely be mandated with a Petrol Particulate Filter here. The only way the LC can meet Euro 6 is to adopt the LC300 new oiler. The old V8 Diesel doesn't & Won't meet the new legislation.
Al Pal. Australia. I bought new a 2002, turbo 4.2lt diesel Troopy with factory diff locks. After warranty expired, I had fitted a DP chip, exhaust ram on snorkel and 3" exhaust, also wide wheels running Coopers only. Also fitted coils over rear leaf springs and replaced front coils for a very agreeable ride over all surfaces with a 2" lift. The ONLY repairs was an airconditioning pump and shock absorbers. Serviced only by me since Warranty expirey. Have now recorded 340,000 kilometres, travelled many thousands of Klm's over most of Australia's inland/outback/beach/Cape York tracks. Never missed a beat and embarrassed quite a few more "modern", electronically aided 4WD,s. Currently undergoing a body/paintwork make-over which I regard as a half-life refresh. A close inspection has revealed NO rust present, due to a very thorough rust proofing after original purchase and sensible maintenance since. 340,000 Klms AND 20 YEARS OF TROUBLE FREE EXPLORING. I ASK YOU - WHY WOULD I WANT TO BUY ANYTHING ELSE!!!?
Isn't it a sign of the times that you have to pay $80,000 for a pretty average boxy base model looking vehicle, and then have to spend more to spec it up to what you want or need!
80k for a car which cost less when it was cutting edge technology. The logic of less is more is okay but surely the price should come down too? If I have even less and dont have a LC at all is that worth more? Lol it should be 15k
I think the 70 series is only produced in limited numbers based on factory capacity and Toyota knows it will sell all of them without fixing any of the shortcomings you highlighted. In a more competitive market it would be crazy not to fix them as a lot have cheap fixes and the customers aren't very price conscious either.
The reason the middle seat is better padded is because it encourages the kids to sit there and reduces arguing for window seats. The reason the rear seat back is on such an angle is to induce sleeping. I have three girls across the back, I know this stuff 🙂
I think it's a good honest vehicle. New front seats, some sound proofing and a few modern day extras and this could tow a cub campa all around Australia. I like it. I score it eight out of ten as is.
The level of modern and comfort they brought to this is perfect. The wood trim and leather/wood steering wheel is super nice. It’s got modern conveniences, and yet it’s still a tried and true, capable and sturdy old school land cruiser but it’s brand new. I really wish this was sold in the US, there’s no way I wouldn’t own one.
Love my 76 series. Good honest and reliable truck that'll take you anywhere. Nothing wrong with basic controls. There are too many precious people wanting too much bling.
In the motorcycle world there are some bikes that have been made for 30 years with vary little change. Like 650s from the early 90s, they still even use carbs. My only guess is cars have so many more regulations and they want to have more check boxes than other people so when people cross shop they don't look worse.
Modern cars are more complicated mainly for regulations. Second for luxus some people seek for. I would like to see some car combining both. Reliability & toughness with "luxus" like seats where I can comfortably ride more than 50 km without backache. Better suspension. I know it's built more for off-road then city, but around Europe there is not much places like outback town there under. So parking sensors at least for back are useful. Camera will be real luxus :-D but it does help to reverse with bigger car. Not a big issue is you have a Warn solid metal bumper and reversing in the bush, but it would help in city jungle a lot. The 5 gear in 2022? Not sure it is more reliable and serviceable then some modern AT gearboxes, like AISIN 8th gear might be better choice. Speaking about last solid car .. I might think more about Lexus model/variant of this, then this particular one.
Mostly government regulations... CAFE standards, emissions standards, crash standards, driver assist standards. Leftism is very costly and reduces choices.

Thanks for the honest review. If I had the money the 76 would be my favorite. But as I don’t, I got the 2nd best option - a 2022 Jimny. (You mention the Troop Carrier. In my opinion it’s too much of a bus for my liking. Yes, it’s probably the better option for over-landing, but I still find the 76 more appealing for some reason as it looks to be more of an all rounder than the Troopy would be.) The solid rear back rest surprised me. I would expect a 50/50 split at least. Didn’t know the 76 comes with front & rear diff-lockers. Like that a lot. I like your view in the moderate factory tuning of the engine. It’s conservative for longevity.
Truth! Can't wait for the long wheel base Jimny to arrive! I think Jeep Wrangler sales are gonna fall heavily when it gets launched. Just hope they develop a small diesel variant as well
@@A.D.D.O.C.D.T Yesterday afternoon I drove my Jimny up a VERY! steep mountain track soaked in clay & mud after last nights rain. Going down to Laguna Brava/Guatemala was easy. Gravity helped… 😁😂. Going back up was a completely different story! The track is beyond belief steep with very sharp turns. Adding mud/clay to it all made me think the Jimny wouldn’t make it. But she did! 1st and 2nd gear low range and engine revs at 3000 or above. It was by far the toughest 4x4 driving I’ve ever done and the Jimny with A/T tires had no issues getting up to the top. It was far from an easy drive, but she delivered above expectations. - Regrets buying her? - Not in a lifetime!
It's sold here a ton in Saudi Arabia. It's a very popular car amongst people who like to offroad or just want a simpler, tried and true vehicle. The version we have here are way cheaper than the one in the video, they are pretty similar but the Saudi version is about 30k USD for the full spec. Meanwhile, the newest full spec LC300 Land Cruiser is over 100k USD in our market.
I love the 70 series and it is truly the last of the proper utilitarian 4X4's....However I like very much what I see in regard to the new Grenadier when it arrives later this year / early next year. It has been very well thought out and if it is any good they will sell them by the boatload..
This bad boy will never be in short of supply in GCC countries. Every year they launch updated versions. This year we got: 1) Land Cruiser 71 Series (3 Door - 4 Seater in Petrol 4.0L and 4.5L Diesel) 2) Land Cruiser 76 series (5 Door - 5 Seats in Petrol 4.0L & 4.6L and 4.5L Diesel) 3) Land Cruiser 78 Series (3 Door - 9 seaters or mostly used as conversion ambulance in MENA region) 4) Land Cruiser 79 Series (4 Door or 2 Door Pickup truck with Full Time 4x4 in 4.0L or 4.6L or 4.5L)
Great review. Nearly all the 4wds I've owned have been Land Rovers, mainly in NA - Defender TDI, 80s RR, D2, D3. They've all been pretty reliable but always very enjoyable. Like most LR owners, especially when they've had the inevitable issue crop up, I've looked over the fence and wondered... May be a Toyota Landcruiser or 4runner next time. After test driving them though I never left feeling enthusiastic, so never bought one. I have used my LRs to their full capability and beyond but never 100s of miles from civilization. If I was driving the canning stock road I would go for a Troopy every time. Maslow's hierarchy kicks in and survival above all else.
I've had a similar Land Rover journey but punctuated with hiluxes and different LandCruisers along the way. My latest change was from a D2a into a 76 series. Despite still liking older Land Rovers, the 76 is awesome. Lots to like about it including that the maintenance is routine and boring. I don't miss the LR ongoing oil leaks, three amigos making regular appearances, ongoing fuel block leaks and various other LR gremlins that are usually timed to coincide with a trip away.
I've still got my 1997 Prado 3.4 litre Petrol (ie Gas for Americans) GXL, built in Japan, sold as a Lexus in the USA. I bought it new, and waited months for it to come. I love it - its not heavy and full of lots of unnecessary extras. But ... I've done 107,000 km in my D4 Landrover. Totally reliable, accurate, comfortable, quiet, kills most off road and my wife never gets worried due to its ride and stability, I tow an off road van which weighs 2.5 tonne, and I get the same fuel economy as the Prado does, without it towing anything. The D4 is both a chassis and a monocoque. Ford did it great with the D3 idea, and sorry, but its like having your cake and eating it too. I must be getting old ...
Mostly a decent review. I disagree with the comment about not needing to use first gear around town. Yes, a 70 series will take off quite effortlessly in second gear. The current model perhaps not as well as the pre 2016 model which had a lower second gear. Although you have plenty of torque, it's a heavy vehicle and without a rolling start it's more advisable to be kind to the clutch and build momentum using first gear. Starting in second gear too often is likely to result in premature clutch wear.
@@damilolaakanni 76 is a lot more heavy duty than a 4runner. V8 diesel, manual trans, solid axles, twin lockers, much higher payload. Available as a wagon, troop carrier, single cab chassis and double cab chassis. Just way too expensive compared to US full size vehicles. In Australia they sell the 70 series along side full size landcruiser (300 series), landcruiser prado (same body as gx), fortuner (Asia 4runner) hilux, highlander and rav4.
Honest review. Does what it is designed to do by the bucket load. No frills at all. The two redeeming aspects of the beast are its ability to pull a heavy load over any terrain without a sweat (or a hunting gearbox, because you can stick in in the right gear and forget it) and diff locks on both axles-I have got almost too confident about where I can take it. One really has to have a strong trailer to go with this thing. Comfort is NOT its forte though!
This is all about taste and style, some people do not want to drive cars everyone does on the street. Few years on when toyota got rid of all V8 they have this the price of this 76s will shoot thru the roof, just like the classic defenders , used ones have now doubled in value from new with not delivery miles but USED USED USED. Note the defenders are even more difficult to drive and live with than this toyota. Few years onwards you can be SOMEBODY when you are really NO ONE while driving one of these on the street trust me!
This is timeless in design. It gives chance to people who want the retro look without the problems of old running models. Customizing this new model will be infinite and ra eal treat to hardcore enthusiasts.
Only issue with them is the difference between front and rear track which is a PITA on soft surfaces like sand. To the extent there are companies in Australia selling replacement rear axle assembles (Housing etc) to fix the problem . Also only has leaf springs in the rear.. but again you can get a kit in Australia to replace them with rear coil springs multi link suspension ... (Big hint to Toyota of what a lot of customers want and are willing to pay $$ for ) And there is a new model coming later in 2022.. Down side is there is currently a four year order backlog to get one ...

Love your reviews, and this very pricey Land Cruiser as well! Not available in my country. I didn't know it was still sold as new until a few years ago I visited a missionary friend of mine in South Africa. Somehow he took me to a Toyota Dealership in the free state.

Great car if you need a work horse of a 4wd to take onto a remote farm or mine site. Absolute nightmare to drive on the tarmac and in city traffic. Not cheap too.
This is the most constructive review I have ever seen on the LC76. You need to have a passion for this vehicle, same as the utes, if you're entertaining the idea of owning one otherwise you will will be disappointed in the long term. I own one, so I do know what I'm talking about. Are they the best? Most definitely not. However they're in a class of their own and can only be appreciated by someone who understands their limitations and benefits. Think about the old defender, great vehicle, but it too has its limitations, albeit different to the that of the lc76. Thanks for the content
This vehicle is my dream as second or third family car. There were produced some quantity for JDM with 4.0 liter V6. For cold winters gas engine is more preferred.
We live in these and 79s on 100% dirt at work, they never see the black top. If you drive these on dirt roads with the air on recycle it’ll resemble a dirt road inside in 6 months - it’ll be putrid. If you’re on dirt and there’s clean air in front of you put it on flow through. It’s what those black vents are for underneath the back window (on the 79s they’re behind the cab). Do your own test and feel what goes on with that vent. Reliable fourbies but I’d rather sacrifice a little reliability for ten times more comfort🤘
The only reason I'm not buying a brand spaking new one is because of emissions barring them from being sold in the EU... And up to a couple of years ago, I'd use to frequently visit one of the factories they were being built in... God, I joked so many times with the people there about stealing one for myself. They truly are a work of art.
Does the 76 have the staggered F/R track like the utes? I suspect it does, and that Toyota still hasn't fixed it... So glad I bought a 2021 GXL 200 Series while I could.. So much roomier and more comfortable!

Having recently driven my mechanic's Y62 Patrol, they are equivalent inside and the biggest passenger vehicles I've ever sat in. Wouldn't like to step up to a RAM or similar they are really expensive here and too big for our car parks, imo. There's just no advantage in them for me.

I hope Toyota keeps this vehicle and improves it to be like the G Wagen. People will buy these things far more if they were a bit more luxurious. I see them here in Nigeria but they're mostly UN branded and/or by Boko Haram (still a wonder how they get them). For me, if I had the means, I'd take this anyday, even in its barest of configurations. I love it bare and old.
If i was travelling around Australia this is the vehicle i would buy in about 5 seconds the LANDCRUISER is no stranger to harsh environments oh what a 70th 🤠🦘🦘🐨🐨 Toyota 👍👍👍👍
When these came out in '84, they were offered with automatic transmissions, but somewhere in the production run they were discontinued. I'd love to see this with the 8 speed automatic transmission from the 200 series, or at least the 5 speed automatic transmission from the 4runner.
My first Cruiser was a '93 KZJ70 short wheelbase with the 3.0 litre turboDiesel lump, still have a 2005 Prado with the similar 3.0 litre engine though now in D4D form. Interestingly my 70 had coil springs all round. There's nothing sold new in England i would buy, but if Toyota had seen fit to bring in the 76 i'd have gladly bought one.
Thanks for your great show. I learn't to drive in the Zululand Bush in a Land cruiser FJ45 and have a huge amount of respect for their rugged, practicality. Your commentary is true in every respect.. I would choose the simplest, most basic iteration of this series for Africa. Your comment around wheel and tyre pattern is 100 percent and winding windows are correct for the application. It still is King Of The Bush and I would give my left gombule for one.
Toyota USA makes a lot of marketing decisions that are difficult to understand. This Land Cruiser is a good example of a vehicle that would have a big following and increase their customer base. But they don't even try to bring it to the US, The Tacoma is a excellent mid sized truck but tens of thousands of people would choose a proper heavy duty truck over the lost in the crowd Tundra they sell. Thousands of truck buyers are looking for a solid long lasting heavy duty truck that's not just about fancy interiors and electronics. When will Toyota USA show some imagination!

This is a vehicle that has no hidden issues. You see what you get plus peace of mind knowing it will last and last and last.
people have had problems with the DPF on these, the front wheels are also further apart than the back wheels (for bigger engine) so toyota cheaped out and just didn't bother widening the back wheel distance either (which some people just get done aftermarket) but those are minor gripes really.
I wouldn't say that about Toyota's Diesel engine. Some of them go out well before reaching 200k.

These things have lots of issues, starter motor failure (8 hour job to change it in the V8 valley)
Alternators fail in wet or muddy conditions due to being the lowest item in the engine bay.
They crab all over the place on any loose surface (sand/mud) due to the narrow rear track not following the front.
The park brake is inoperable after a couple of months.
All that before you begin on the under powered engine that gobbles fuel like a thirsty camel!

This vehicle is just a work of art. I love it. I wish it was sold in the US. All of the things it doesn't have are the things I don't want like lane keep assist, auto start/stop, etc. All of these modern annoyances are gone. And you know it won't be a broken down piece of junk in 4 years and won't appear ugly in 4 years when the "new model" comes out.
I believe you can import a 70series model from 1997, they all from same chassis, the only difference from the new model is interior and tech (mostly ABS and ESP and such) and front bumper and fender and back bumper, and the petrol engine did change after 2009, which was 1FZ-FE and now it's 1GR-FE for the petrol models.
@@yinyangsaladgang8789 Well, where i live we only got diesels after 2019 or 2018, before that it was only V6 Petrol, and they were quite reliable, we live on desert so rust isn't really an issue, most of those who buy LC70 they will use it harshly, because they know it will go back home, unlike a Land Rover, price comparison between LC70 and the new LC300 or LC200 is quite big, and those vehicle doesn't have the clearance or the short wheelbase like LC70 has 😅

I have a 2009 76 Series here in the Middle East. As an American, I always wished they would be available in the states. I looked for 2 years to find one here. The pros definitely outweigh the cons. I think the lack of electronics and the simplicity of this vehicle is exactly what it is supposed to be. It was never intended to be a luxury vehicle.

I own a 2014 76 Cruiser. You have to have a passion for overlanding and travelling the back roads to justify this vehicle. Its dreadful in traffic and ghastly on freeway but once you are in the Bushveld in Africa there is nothing better. It's a beast that stops at nothing. Reliable and unbreakable. Beautiful high ride for game viewing, tows like a dream and rolls over anything in its path. You can pack it to hilt and add a roof rack and pack that too. Add a clamshell rooftop tent and you can sleep wherever you stop whenever you like. The low range and front back lockers with live axels give it an edge over most other SUVs. I did more than half a 4x4 obstacle route before realising I hadn't locked the hubs and actually wasn't in 4x4. Ground clearance is unparalleled. My kids love it, my wife loves to hate it but secretly also loves it. I test drove a Prado and a Fortuner but when I test drove the 76 I couldn't get the smile off my face for days.

I’ve had two 70series, a 75 and currently 79 series. They haven’t changed much over the yrs , nice and basic but they just do the job they’re made for!

I drove virtually the whole range of Land Cruisers over my working life in forestry, first was the neck breaking FJ40 short wheel base.
What I loved with all of them, they were so simple to drive and work on and started every time you turned the key. You couldn't ask for a better off road vehicle.

Just recently Toyota has become an icon to me, LOOKING BACK at its well earned legacy of overall quality/reliabillity with its 80s through mid 2000's models. Not a 4WD person, I'll agree they were good on that niche in the 70's. My admiration tends to drop off post 2010 as they've seemed to enter a tech-miasma that so many cars are caught up in today, thanks ESG.
I'm amazed that Toyota has zeroed-in on that era and essence with this reiteration of the Land Cruiser.
All the more reason to celebrate this 70th anniversay... but why no ENGINE review???

bullshit.. as a current owner of a v8 78 series toyota and a past owner of nissan patrol .2 turbo diesels i can confidently state that the patrols are a less worrisome tougher beast to own.. patrols have solid axle front and rear, a truely bullet proof 6 cyclinder strait 6 diesel (not as powerful as the LC V8 but good torque where it counts down low) far less troublesome with oil leaks and less tempromental with oil , engine sensors etc and general practicality like the starter and alternator positioning. Inedpendent suspension all around, so a way better ride and articulation combination than the 78 series. Not so polished inside but it sitll has everything you need and it stays working, apart from maybe the electric window regulators every 20 years or so.
in saying that, i love the exrta overtaking power of the 78, and also teh sound but its nowhere near as durable as the patrol turbo 6.
toyotas are popular because dealers are everywhere in australia, they havnt evolved much and parts and repair knowledge is widespread because the model is so old.
but they have heaps of probs like rust in the roof, shit paint quality, sesitive to bad fuel, deadly weak brakes and handbrake straight from the factory, a widowmaker crash rating, terrible economy esp for how little power they make crap seats and general comfort/mirrors and all the things that could easily be fixed..
in sayting that though, i still like it.. but only cos there are few other well supported vehicles that are credible as opposition..

Nice balanced review. It brought teary eyes as I relive some of the adventures with my old 1977 FJ40 short wheelbase: 4.2 Lts gasoline engine , 6 cylinders and no more than 125HP. It drank more than a sailor (~20lts/100km) and stiff as a 2x4. But I love it and we did over 200,000km. The word "indestructible" comes to mind. Bravo Toyota.
Great thorough review of one of my favourites. The highlight for me was demonstrating getting in/out of the vehicle, if limited to the back seat. From a disability perspective, and there's lots of us older arthritic folks out here, it would be great to see more reviews where the drivers seat is all the way back, steering wheel all the way forward and up, drivers door fully open, and seeing the reviewer climb in and out. My disability is progressing so my days with my XC70 are numbered, and I'm looking to find an alternative, maybe a van, or a bus??? Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

Not going anywhere just yet. Only thing likely to happen is an Engine upgrade in late 2023 or early 2024 to meet Euro 6. Out goes the old V8 oiler & in comes a likely single turbo variant of the LC300's new 6cyl unit to meet the Euro 6 mandate here in Jan 24. Might undergo a major refresh as well.

@@brocksinclair66 they may not be able to due to Euro 6 now being mandated in Australia in Jan 2024. All new vehicles including 4WD's etc must meet Euro 6 . Diesels will need AdBlue , Eolys or an equivalent additive. Petrol vehicles here will likely be mandated with a Petrol Particulate Filter here. The only way the LC can meet Euro 6 is to adopt the LC300 new oiler. The old V8 Diesel doesn't & Won't meet the new legislation.
My friend had two FJ60's here in Canada. An '84 diesel with manual and an '89 with the straight six and auto. My back remembers them well
Al Pal. Australia. I bought new a 2002, turbo 4.2lt diesel Troopy with factory diff locks. After warranty expired, I had fitted a DP chip, exhaust ram on snorkel and 3" exhaust, also wide wheels running Coopers only. Also fitted coils over rear leaf springs and replaced front coils for a very agreeable ride over all surfaces with a 2" lift.
The ONLY repairs was an airconditioning pump and shock absorbers. Serviced only by me since Warranty expirey. Have now recorded 340,000 kilometres, travelled many thousands of Klm's over most of Australia's inland/outback/beach/Cape York tracks. Never missed a beat and embarrassed quite a few more "modern", electronically aided 4WD,s. Currently undergoing a body/paintwork make-over which I regard as a half-life refresh. A close inspection has revealed NO rust present, due to a very thorough rust proofing after original purchase and sensible maintenance since. 340,000 Klms AND 20 YEARS OF TROUBLE FREE EXPLORING. I ASK YOU - WHY WOULD I WANT TO BUY ANYTHING ELSE!!!?

I think the 70 series is only produced in limited numbers based on factory capacity and Toyota knows it will sell all of them without fixing any of the shortcomings you highlighted. In a more competitive market it would be crazy not to fix them as a lot have cheap fixes and the customers aren't very price conscious either.

The reason the middle seat is better padded is because it encourages the kids to sit there and reduces arguing for window seats. The reason the rear seat back is on such an angle is to induce sleeping. I have three girls across the back, I know this stuff 🙂
I think it's a good honest vehicle. New front seats, some sound proofing and a few modern day extras and this could tow a cub campa all around Australia. I like it. I score it eight out of ten as is.

The level of modern and comfort they brought to this is perfect. The wood trim and leather/wood steering wheel is super nice. It’s got modern conveniences, and yet it’s still a tried and true, capable and sturdy old school land cruiser but it’s brand new. I really wish this was sold in the US, there’s no way I wouldn’t own one.

In the motorcycle world there are some bikes that have been made for 30 years with vary little change. Like 650s from the early 90s, they still even use carbs. My only guess is cars have so many more regulations and they want to have more check boxes than other people so when people cross shop they don't look worse.
Modern cars are more complicated mainly for regulations. Second for luxus some people seek for.
I would like to see some car combining both. Reliability & toughness with "luxus" like seats where I can comfortably ride more than 50 km without backache. Better suspension. I know it's built more for off-road then city, but around Europe there is not much places like outback town there under. So parking sensors at least for back are useful. Camera will be real luxus :-D but it does help to reverse with bigger car. Not a big issue is you have a Warn solid metal bumper and reversing in the bush, but it would help in city jungle a lot. The 5 gear in 2022? Not sure it is more reliable and serviceable then some modern AT gearboxes, like AISIN 8th gear might be better choice.
Speaking about last solid car .. I might think more about Lexus model/variant of this, then this particular one.

If I had the money the 76 would be my favorite. But as I don’t, I got the 2nd best option - a 2022 Jimny. (You mention the Troop Carrier. In my opinion it’s too much of a bus for my liking. Yes, it’s probably the better option for over-landing, but I still find the 76 more appealing for some reason as it looks to be more of an all rounder than the Troopy would be.)
The solid rear back rest surprised me. I would expect a 50/50 split at least.

@@A.D.D.O.C.D.T Yesterday afternoon I drove my Jimny up a VERY! steep mountain track soaked in clay & mud after last nights rain. Going down to Laguna Brava/Guatemala was easy. Gravity helped… 😁😂. Going back up was a completely different story! The track is beyond belief steep with very sharp turns. Adding mud/clay to it all made me think the Jimny wouldn’t make it. But she did!
1st and 2nd gear low range and engine revs at 3000 or above. It was by far the toughest 4x4 driving I’ve ever done and the Jimny with A/T tires had no issues getting up to the top. It was far from an easy drive, but she delivered above expectations.

It's sold here a ton in Saudi Arabia. It's a very popular car amongst people who like to offroad or just want a simpler, tried and true vehicle. The version we have here are way cheaper than the one in the video, they are pretty similar but the Saudi version is about 30k USD for the full spec. Meanwhile, the newest full spec LC300 Land Cruiser is over 100k USD in our market.
I love the 70 series and it is truly the last of the proper utilitarian 4X4's....However I like very much what I see in regard to the new Grenadier when it arrives later this year / early next year. It has been very well thought out and if it is any good they will sell them by the boatload..

Great review. Nearly all the 4wds I've owned have been Land Rovers, mainly in NA - Defender TDI, 80s RR, D2, D3. They've all been pretty reliable but always very enjoyable. Like most LR owners, especially when they've had the inevitable issue crop up, I've looked over the fence and wondered... May be a Toyota Landcruiser or 4runner next time. After test driving them though I never left feeling enthusiastic, so never bought one. I have used my LRs to their full capability and beyond but never 100s of miles from civilization. If I was driving the canning stock road I would go for a Troopy every time. Maslow's hierarchy kicks in and survival above all else.
I've had a similar Land Rover journey but punctuated with hiluxes and different LandCruisers along the way. My latest change was from a D2a into a 76 series. Despite still liking older Land Rovers, the 76 is awesome. Lots to like about it including that the maintenance is routine and boring. I don't miss the LR ongoing oil leaks, three amigos making regular appearances, ongoing fuel block leaks and various other LR gremlins that are usually timed to coincide with a trip away.
I've still got my 1997 Prado 3.4 litre Petrol (ie Gas for Americans) GXL, built in Japan, sold as a Lexus in the USA. I bought it new, and waited months for it to come. I love it - its not heavy and full of lots of unnecessary extras. But ... I've done 107,000 km in my D4 Landrover. Totally reliable, accurate, comfortable, quiet, kills most off road and my wife never gets worried due to its ride and stability, I tow an off road van which weighs 2.5 tonne, and I get the same fuel economy as the Prado does, without it towing anything. The D4 is both a chassis and a monocoque. Ford did it great with the D3 idea, and sorry, but its like having your cake and eating it too. I must be getting old ...
Mostly a decent review. I disagree with the comment about not needing to use first gear around town. Yes, a 70 series will take off quite effortlessly in second gear. The current model perhaps not as well as the pre 2016 model which had a lower second gear. Although you have plenty of torque, it's a heavy vehicle and without a rolling start it's more advisable to be kind to the clutch and build momentum using first gear. Starting in second gear too often is likely to result in premature clutch wear.

I wish Toyota could sell these in the States. Cars in the States are loaded with so much stuffs I don't need, but make them so much more expensive.

Available as a wagon, troop carrier, single cab chassis and double cab chassis. Just way too expensive compared to US full size vehicles. In Australia they sell the 70 series along side full size landcruiser (300 series), landcruiser prado (same body as gx), fortuner (Asia 4runner) hilux, highlander and rav4.

Honest review. Does what it is designed to do by the bucket load. No frills at all. The two redeeming aspects of the beast are its ability to pull a heavy load over any terrain without a sweat (or a hunting gearbox, because you can stick in in the right gear and forget it) and diff locks on both axles-I have got almost too confident about where I can take it. One really has to have a strong trailer to go with this thing. Comfort is NOT its forte though!

The idea of paying so much money for 30 years old design in 2022 is hard to swallow and Prado is not a Land Cruiser.
This is all about taste and style, some people do not want to drive cars everyone does on the street. Few years on when toyota got rid of all V8 they have this the price of this 76s will shoot thru the roof, just like the classic defenders , used ones have now doubled in value from new with not delivery miles but USED USED USED. Note the defenders are even more difficult to drive and live with than this toyota. Few years onwards you can be SOMEBODY when you are really NO ONE while driving one of these on the street trust me!
The Prado is known as a light duty L/C , I owned a early prado years ago it was a 1994 KZJ78 series , factory 80 series transmission, google & learn 👍

This is timeless in design. It gives chance to people who want the retro look without the problems of old running models.
Customizing this new model will be infinite and ra eal treat to hardcore enthusiasts.
Only issue with them is the difference between front and rear track which is a PITA on soft surfaces like sand. To the extent there are companies in Australia selling replacement rear axle assembles (Housing etc) to fix the problem . Also only has leaf springs in the rear.. but again you can get a kit in Australia to replace them with rear coil springs multi link suspension ... (Big hint to Toyota of what a lot of customers want and are willing to pay $$ for )
And there is a new model coming later in 2022.. Down side is there is currently a four year order backlog to get one ...

There’s Jeep Wranglers & Broncos all over the place but I almost never see one of these old Land Cruisers. Beautiful truck

Unfortunately, it's a case that there are still a bunch of brand-new or demo examples in stock but at vastly inflated prices (there's a red wagon like this one with 20km in VIC for $129,999…)

Not available in my country. I didn't know it was still sold as new until a few years ago I visited a missionary friend of mine in South Africa.
Somehow he took me to a Toyota Dealership in the free state.

Great car if you need a work horse of a 4wd to take onto a remote farm or mine site. Absolute nightmare to drive on the tarmac and in city traffic. Not cheap too.
We used this toyota series during geothermal project in the Philippines loaded with rock bit uphill no problem. Tough Powerful engine.

This is the most constructive review I have ever seen on the LC76. You need to have a passion for this vehicle, same as the utes, if you're entertaining the idea of owning one otherwise you will will be disappointed in the long term. I own one, so I do know what I'm talking about. Are they the best? Most definitely not. However they're in a class of their own and can only be appreciated by someone who understands their limitations and benefits. Think about the old defender, great vehicle, but it too has its limitations, albeit different to the that of the lc76. Thanks for the content
This vehicle is my dream as second or third family car. There were produced some quantity for JDM with 4.0 liter V6. For cold winters gas engine is more preferred.

We live in these and 79s on 100% dirt at work, they never see the black top. If you drive these on dirt roads with the air on recycle it’ll resemble a dirt road inside in 6 months - it’ll be putrid. If you’re on dirt and there’s clean air in front of you put it on flow through. It’s what those black vents are for underneath the back window (on the 79s they’re behind the cab). Do your own test and feel what goes on with that vent. Reliable fourbies but I’d rather sacrifice a little reliability for ten times more comfort🤘
Wish we had these in the U.S. the 70 series has always been my dream cruiser.
The only reason I'm not buying a brand spaking new one is because of emissions barring them from being sold in the EU...
And up to a couple of years ago, I'd use to frequently visit one of the factories they were being built in... God, I joked so many times with the people there about stealing one for myself.
They truly are a work of art.

@@yucynthia5210 I don't know what you are comparing it to, maybe big American utes? Having recently driven my mechanic's Y62 Patrol, they are equivalent inside and the biggest passenger vehicles I've ever sat in.
Wouldn't like to step up to a RAM or similar they are really expensive here and too big for our car parks, imo. There's just no advantage in them for me.
I love the “white UN” look these vehicles had. Useless for my urban life in UK I’m sad to say.

I hope Toyota keeps this vehicle and improves it to be like the G Wagen. People will buy these things far more if they were a bit more luxurious.
I see them here in Nigeria but they're mostly UN branded and/or by Boko Haram (still a wonder how they get them).
For me, if I had the means, I'd take this anyday, even in its barest of configurations. I love it bare and old.
If i was travelling around Australia this is the vehicle i would buy in about 5 seconds the LANDCRUISER is no stranger to harsh environments oh what a 70th 🤠🦘🦘🐨🐨 Toyota 👍👍👍👍
Really well done Toyota! Beautiful and great blend of classic and new but I would want an automatic though.
When these came out in '84, they were offered with automatic transmissions, but somewhere in the production run they were discontinued. I'd love to see this with the 8 speed automatic transmission from the 200 series, or at least the 5 speed automatic transmission from the 4runner.

Great review. 76 series is a great starting point for an overlander. Although a stock GX 300 series would always be better.

My first Cruiser was a '93 KZJ70 short wheelbase with the 3.0 litre turboDiesel lump, still have a 2005 Prado with the similar 3.0 litre engine though now in D4D form.
Interestingly my 70 had coil springs all round.
There's nothing sold new in England i would buy, but if Toyota had seen fit to bring in the 76 i'd have gladly bought one.

Thanks for your great show. I learn't to drive in the Zululand Bush in a Land cruiser FJ45 and have a huge amount of respect for their rugged, practicality. Your commentary is true in every respect.. I would choose the simplest, most basic iteration of this series for Africa. Your comment around wheel and tyre pattern is 100 percent and winding windows are correct for the application. It still is King Of The Bush and I would give my left gombule for one.
BTW my current car is a Mahindra Karoo DC 4x4 which is surprisingly good for my application in the
Toyota USA makes a lot of marketing decisions that are difficult to understand. This Land Cruiser is a good example of a vehicle that would have a big following and increase their customer base. But they don't even try to bring it to the US, The Tacoma is a excellent mid sized truck but tens of thousands of people would choose a proper heavy duty truck over the lost in the crowd Tundra they sell. Thousands of truck buyers are looking for a solid long lasting heavy duty truck that's not just about fancy interiors and electronics. When will Toyota USA show some imagination!
