Thank you sir. I wish I knew this before putting the engine back together. I made sure to get the pin in the top centre. I did not check the sprocket marking but it won't be far off. Just wondering how precise this needs to be? A couple mm off might be ok?
You need to be pretty precise there have you checked to see when the points break open in relation to the cam timing since reassembally?.... there is a tiny bit of wiggle room but they run so much better when you get that lined up straight and start a hell of a lot easier
@@thepyrodude Thanks for that. So I've pulled the rockerbox off. Found some metal shavings in the oil, not good.. Or is that normal as I've done a full rebuild and there's a lack of oil in the first seconds runnings? I've only had it run for 3 seconds and don't see damage to rockers or valves so I think Im good. Is that were damage would occur? The dot was about 6mm off. I'll adjust it and see how we go. Thanks
PYRO NATION just hope it helps others make these run again....I've gotta tear the top end down on the one I recently bought...the head wasn't properly torqued down so when I took it out to ride it for the 1st time it burned a hole thru the head gasket or blew it out one of the two....just waiting on a gasket and seal set for it and a bunch of other parts I bought for it.....new parts for theses are expensive even used parts aren't cheap.....a n.o.s yamaha head gasket is 56 bucks for one gasket......that's why I buy these bikes when I find them not running and just stock away the parts.....I'm up to 5 of these bikes now and parts for days...and already have another bike lined up to buy....restored these bikes sell for for 5 times what they sold new around 5 to 7 grand....but some sell for a hell of a lot more there's an HL replica tt 500 yamaha on ebay right now with a 17,800.00 reserve ...like I said these sell for big money restored...a reconditioned fuel tank for one is 1500 exchanged for your old one with out an exchanged as much as 2100
Just going thru my new parts and cleaning up some old ones preparing for the big day when I pull the engine out of my bike... I'm just about there waiting on my gaskets to arrive which should be tomorrow.....but the weather may be so bad I don't get to work on it we have a big storm going on right now 70mph winds and calling for a foot of snow or more tonight
George its much much easier to remove the engine....but some you can barely squeeze the rocker cover off....super tight not much room between the rocker cover and the frame to get the rocker cover off
+George when you are about to set your cam in double check that the piston is at t.d.c on the intake stroke and the points are about to open....its very easy to do valve damage if it's set in on the exhaust stroke
George welcome if you run into any other issues or problems or just have questions don't hesitate to ask....ive got quite a bit of experience with these bikes
That’s only half the story. You didn’t show the viewers the timing marks. It’s not the F mark it’s the T mark, Top dead centre. F is before top dead centre for ignition timing. The T mark is found by removing a plastic cover on the RH crank case. This exposes the crank end and the plate that rotates with the crankshaft. Or the T mark can also be found on the alternator flywheel (in most cases)
Yes it’s there under the points cover on every XT TT and SR I’ve ever seen. I’ve all three here at home ans all three have timing covers and all three have marks on the flywheel. So i accept your engine has no cover which is very strange but the marks are on the flywheel and it’s T not F.
@@thepyrodude True later ones have no points as my SR. But it’s still T not F and showing a cam twirling around without showing the viewers an image of the crank timing marks or flywheel marks, and then how to align all is useless.
I apologize I'm not receiving messages on this video anymore please refer to another video of mine for future questions
Also make sure that the chain slack is on the tensioner side.

@@thepyrodude thanks, I'll pull the rockerbox off again. Cheers
Let me know what you've come up with and I can assist you further from there if needed

do you need to remove the whole engine from bike to do this ??

Nope no plastic covers on a tt500

@@petergarvey2358 I didn't say it didn't have one I said it isn't plastic
Oh and by the way not every sr xt and tt has a points cover

Shame you didn't show how to time it properly so the points don't end up 180 degrees out
Why is that a shame do you think I owe you something 🤔 video was for cam position not ignition timing
