I had a 76 model when I was in high school in 1979. It was a pretty good bye and I had to rebuild the top end one time. This guy is an absolute expert in his field. My hat is off to you sir. When I did the second rebuild I was in the Air Force and it made it a better motor but I still didn't do it quite correctly as you obviously have

This reminds me of the James Bond movie when Bond is being chased by the guys on these bikes. Then the indicators rotate around and become machine guns! Hillarious.
The part in the movie where he starts with the assembly of the 535 cc. is my 1978 XT 500 engine. It runs very well. At the moment the engine of my 1981 XT 500 is undergoing the same treatment. TH-cam decided this video was a good fit for me....maybe artificial intelligence isn't so bad after all:) It is pure therapy watching you go about the process of breathing new life into classic dirt bikes. All the momentum in motorcycling is centered around dirt based bikes, as there is a great and interesting chronology of advancements taking place during this era. Thusly, it enables you interpret restoration with an eye on where things were going back then. Through the filter of your very capable mind and imagination, a bike is reborn and is stunning. Your aesthetic plays a big role, and I hope to see more.

The sound of a Yamaha XT 500 was a scary thing in Amsterdam if you were a teenager with a moped that ran illegal speeds. The police used these XT’s to chase mopeds and scooters in the 80’s and 90’s.
I've watched this video several times over the years. I love it! it was very helpful when I rebuilt my engine. I noticed that your valve cover has the rocker spindle grub screws added in. I would love it if you made a video about that modification. Does it quiet down the top end noise a lot? My XT is tame compared to yours: 535cc, 251-40 cam, 36mm flat slide carb and 10:1 piston. Fast enough to get the heart pumping though!

This is a massive increase in capacity but having said that back in the seventies you could kit a 250 out to 410. Mine was a kitted out 250 to 305. 8000rpm at 80 miles per hour.

I had an SR500 in the mid 80's, and it was lot of fun, light and torque beast.

Looking at the rebuilt bike,I much prefer the exhaust off the Mk1 Xt.. its a low down style,its just my opinion..But all in all nice job!!!
That's the one I had. Put a SuperTrapp with a 3" stack of disks on it. It out ran BMW's.
