    Just want to say this helped me set up my M1 Macbook Pro with my Motu 16A and Ableton. I had to do some more steps due to the Motu matrix routing but finally worked it out. Now I can connect my outboard gear to my M1 with one cat6 cable. Tahnk you.

    Ray! Now my 24ai sits by the stage and I am 200 feet away sipping coffee with a 13" macbook pro, usb c to thunderbolt 2 dongle to a thunderbolt 2 to gigiabit dongle. The dude at the apple store looked at me like I was nuts. But it works with zero complaint. Boom, 24 analog channels. I would have never figured out I needed 2 dongles. Thank you. Thank you very much.

      @@BeerswiththeBeard I'm looking to connect my Macbook running Ableton Live to my NSB 16.8 stagebox [and ultimately route the audio to particular inputs to play through the house]. Is this possible with this method? Thanks for the video, I'm going to try it out this week but was just curious. My board is the Presonus studiolive III 32s.
      I'm way more familiar with the Yamaha + Dante system which made this extremely easy [pretty much plug and play]... I'm wondering if there's any official [ideally written in simple terms] documentation on this from Presonus?

    Thanks for the explanation! A use case it's not mentioned but it totally works is setting up to 64 channels between two Macs with just an ethernet cable. Adding Loopback to the equation you can have routing independent from the DAW and share the same regular (non AVB) USB device (or aggregated devices) I/O between those two computers! It's amazingly stable and latency is great. Audio routed to the same interface output is summed.
    Super useful for live uses like redundancy setups, two people (two DAW) performances, offloading CPU, audio and video/light independent processes (audio reactivity) and maaany more stuff I can't think of now. If you happen to have two Macs, I suggest to make a video specifically for a two Mac setup with USB audio interface, a lot of people would be interested. Cheers!

      What dongles do you use to connect the 2 Macs?
      I have 2 Macbook Pro M1 2021 laptops that I would like to route audio between. I have tried using the regular dongles but it doesn't work well.
      Please advice on what dongles or USB audio interface you use for your setup with Loopback.

      I know AVB “requires” an Ethernet cable, somewhere between the Macs (at least was a key to understanding for me). I have 2 Macs: each with an Apple Thunderbolt2 to Ethernet dongle (actually one is, first, a T3-to-T2-dongle, then a T2-to-Ethernet-dongle) & an Ethernet cable between them for 64 tracks.
      If I connect straight to one Mac’s Ethernet port, I seem to always be pulled into being limited to 16 tracks….(maybe I’m wrong & every Config defaults to 16 🤷‍♂️ I dunno 🙄)
      I know even an old Thunderbolt2 port is MUCH faster than a 1Gb Ethernet port (& the Ethernet cable just rides along at any speed it’s connected to…mine is Cat8)
      Btw I just got 2 of these ($6 for 10ft?? 🥳)
      & the first Ethernet cable I’ve weirdly ever thought of as “gorgeous” 🙄

    I was trying to set this up on my new Mac Studio M2 Max (Studiolive 32sc & NSB 16.8), some differences in the AVB util. No simple virtual audio window any more. It's all under the ATDECC controller. With those differences in mind, I did enable it on the new mac studio, but could never get return audio out of the mains. Banged my head against this for a few days until I broke down and got a specific avb thunderbolt adapter (sonnet thunderbolt avb adapter). Worked like a charm, got return audio out the mains. I'm not sure if there's been changes to the internal nic on the studio or not but I thought it would be a good idea to post this here in case others are having the same issue.

    Hi Ray,
    Thank you for this informative video!!!
    Since you know AVB inside out maybe you could shine some light on my following problem:
    I would like to set up a small home recording studio as follows (this would be of course the aim, I don't know if this is at the present stage of development possible):
    1. at my Mac I would like something with at least 2 mic and maybe 2 line ins, with 2 or 4 outputs for monitors and maybe headphones - something small 19",
    2. the interface at my mac should be an DAW connection point to the mac and also be able to connect digital stage boxes via ethernet (like Presonus NSB or Midas DL32 or Behringer SD16),
    3. there should be a possibility to connect via ethernet personal monitoring like Presonus EarMix 16M or Midas DP48 - it would be best if this was possible with power over ethernet and directly to the stage boxes.
    I know that I have mixed different connection protocols, like AVB and AES50, but it was just to show what kind of solution I am looking for.
    Any chance that such a setup might be possible without robbing a bank?
    Kind regards,
    Wojciech Migda

    Do you know if I can use my RME AVB device as an audio interface to record into my DAW as AoIP via the Ethernet port?

    Hey Ray, It's been over a year since this has been recorded. Bring on some more AVB videos/tutorials. I would love to see a complete start to finish with examples showing you actually going into the console menus and show us how to set this up. I tried last night but the subscriptions in the matrix never gave me a check mark in the box. Only an X in the box. Does the console need to be set to Network or internal sync. Can the ethernet AVB be on the same switch as my other Ethernet things. I was trying simply with an Ethernet cable from the console to the Mac, no switch involved.
    thanks, you da man!

    I am using the AVB connection to send tracks to the mixer from one mac (no other devices on the network). Is there still and advantage to setting the mac up as an endpoint vs just using the default acquire connection? Is the connection more stable as an endpoint? I'm currently able to pass signal with the acquire connection, but not with the endpoint set-up outlined in the video. If I am only connecting the one device, are there any compelling advantages to an endpoint connection over an acquire connection? Thanks.

    A big hello and thank you so much Ray for the video. I am a totally newbie to AVB, but have experienced enough latency/other issues via USB 2 route to make me never go down that route again. I am looking at purchasing a SL 32SC to be later used along with the 32R, both as a dumb snake box and as an iPad controlled mini set-up. I read somewhere that you cannot use AVB with the SL 3 series to add preamp channels (32R) when you are also looking to record/playback via AVB with an Apple computer. With my limited understanding of this subject, the process you discussed in the video would seem to be a workaround to this Apple driver limitation. Help!!
    In regards to the SL mixer, I need the road portability of the SL 32 SC plus the capability to increase the channel count via the 24R/32R while still maintaining the ability to record/playback this setup via AVB. What do I need to do to make this happen!!??And did I say that I absolutely hate USB?? Thanks in advance for any help/input regarding my very particular AVB / SL / Apple situation. Cheers!!

    • @BeerswiththeBeard
      @BeerswiththeBeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the method outlined here you'll be able to both use the AVB to add preamps (via the rack mixer or a stage box) and route AVB to/from a compatible Mac computer. Note however that at the moment, the Apple implementation for AVB has a latency similar to USB at around 10ms.

    Use it connected to my computer for my church setting as the main mixer, have all the inputs sent to Waves SuperRack Performer software, have it processed with waves plugins and then sent out the 16R XLRs to FOH
    My question is which connection to my computer (Mac) should I use, AVB or USB? Which should give me the least latency possible? Which one is more stable?

    Hi
    I have a Macbook Pro 15 inch 2017 with Mojave 14.14.6 and Logic Pro X 10.4.6.
    I ´ve been running a Motu Ultralite AVB via Ethernet Port. It has been working just fine.
    But after I was disconnecting the cables when I was moving things around I can´t get the AVB module to show in the Mac (sound) or in Logic Pro X?
    It´s really interesting because when I connect my older Mac Book Pro with High Sierra 10.13.6 and only uses the Apple Ethernet to Thunderbolt 2 adapter It works like a clock.
    But now when I Use my new computer (and it has really worked fine for a long time before i disconnected the cables and put hem back) with a Apple Ethernet to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and then a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3/USB C adapter as the support at MOTU told me I don´t get it to connect again.
    And I really emphasize that it has been working fine with those adapters until today?
    It seems that there is some connectivity problems with the adapters?
    Do you recognize the problem?
    Best regards

    This information is SO useful. Thank you. I am just finishing out my AVB network that includes 4 StudioLive 32R, MOTU AVB Switch and RME Digiface AVB for 128 / 128 over USB 3. While this setup has been rock solid, it would be great to not need the RME Digiface AVB and connect the switch directly to my 2017 iMac. I was under the impression from my previous dance with MOTU hardware (what a nightmare) that direct connection to the Mac was not supported with anything other than macOS 10.11 due to reliability issues with the macOS AVB driver. Is this not the case with the Presonus StudioLive Series 3 devices? Are they stable with macOS Mojave and Catalina? Anyway, thanks for the very useful info. You got a new subscriber!

Also, based on the most recent developments it seems Apple has a renewed interest in growing AVB on their platform. The biggest issue right now is it can be a resource hog. I notice the fans kick in on my Macbook Pro as soon I'm streaming AVB. But that aside, everything seems to work well. I'm running 10.15.4.

    Quick question for you Ray, and maybe for everyone else here in the community. I managed to get everything connected and set up except for one last crucial step. My Studiolive 32SC cannot see my Mac as an available AVB Input stream, so I cannot route any sound from the Mac into the Studiolive mixer. Everything shows up in the AVDECC Connection Matrix and I can connect all the streams there, but the Mixer cannot see the streams from the Mac. Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on why this might happen? Thank you!

    Is it possible with AVB to send a track to your computer to have that track processed through effects and then sent back to the studiolive for use in a live sound application? Like processing a vocal at a concert?

    • @BeerswiththeBeard
      @BeerswiththeBeard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this is possible. Keep in mind that right now the AVB latency is fixed at 2ms so you'll have 2ms to the computer and 2ms from the computer back to the mixer. Add to that whatever your computer internal latency is and you'll have the total round trip latency this will introduce. In the future the AVB latency will be adjustable but 2ms is the required default setting.

    I have a 2013 retina mbp with two tb2 ports. I have a motu 1248 interface, with a motu 24Ai, a motu 24Ao, a motu midi interface XT, and the motu AVB bridge. Motu tech support states that 1248 and midi xt interface must be connected via the motu USB ports to the mbp. I’m assuming that means tb2 to usb cables to both devices and then all three motu devices connected Ethernet through the motu AVB switch? That forces me to then use a OWC thunderbolt 3 pro dock to connect my two 37” display monitors(Dp/hdmi/usb inputs), raid drive(tb3/usb3 ports), soft tube console 1(usb), presonus atom sq(usb), presonus v3 station(usb) and a wireless router. Will my remaining mbp USB port communicate to these devices through the OWC dock successfully in your opinion? With my router Ethernet to the motu AVB bridge and then Ethernet to the OWC dock, provide communication to the other devices periphal devices thru the dock and the mbp successfully? Will my mbp hdmi port run both my monitors or does it have to connect to the dock then feed the monitors from its DP ports? Can you help with my configuration issue?

    • @BeerswiththeBeard
      @BeerswiththeBeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not familiar enough with the MBP display capabilities to answer your HDMI question. As for the Ethernet, if you're running AVB audio on that Ethernet the USB adaptor probably won't work as most of them don't have an AVB compatible chip. If all you need is control, that should work fine.

Yesterday, I followed this video and got our 64s all linked up, but for some reason when I did that, my 64s stopped receiving audio from my NSB 16.8. Now today I came back to continue working on it and trouble shoot it and the computer isn't seeing the 64s connected via ethernet. Trying to figure this out. Hope you can help. Thank you!

    • @BeerswiththeBeard
      @BeerswiththeBeard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Joshua! Just to make sure, you don't have the 64S selected in Core Audio as the sound device correct? This will cause the mixer to enter into "acquire" mode which blocks out all other AVB connections. The computer should have its own Ethernet port as the sound devices. Second, if the computer isn't seeing the 64S over AVB check to see if it shows itself in the ADECC setup or if it reports as all zeros. If that's the case there's a bug we've seen where something on the Apple AVB gets messed up. Reinstalling the OS will fix it.

    That's a pretty nice explanation of AVB. Unfortunately it starts at a late stage of connection procedure. In my case, SL3-24 -> MacBook Pro 15' Retina Mid 2015 running macOS Catalina 10.15..4, it worked fine, however I updated this morning to this macOS version (from 10.15.3). And I upgraded the firmware of my SL324 tob2.3.16845.With the older versions, the SL3-24 showed up in the MacBook's Audio Control as an input/output-device without any problem. Connection was and is made through Audio Network -> CAT6-cable -> Apple adaptor GBit Ethernet to Thunderbolt2. My MacBook does not see the StudioLive III-24. The network shows the Thunderbolt-Ethernet, however marked yellow instead of green. Before the upgrade it worked, after the upgrade it doesn't. Your video starts after this point, thus I am still desperate. What is wrong in my setup?

      Thanks! I haven't heard anything about AVB audio streaming being natively supported in Windows. Media Clock is the same as Word Clock. @BeerswiththeBeard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clock, like that of AES or ADAT devices, can be synced through a dedicated stream such as the Media Clock stream which carries only Media Clock or by clocking off an Audio stream. Currently PreSonus AVB products clock of the incoming Audio stream 1 but this will change in the future to a dedicated Media Clock stream to be compliant with the Avnu Milan certification.
      Sending other data such as time code and MIDI I'm sure is possible. The specifications are for TSN or Time Sensitive Networking and are not exclusive to Audio and Video. I'm not sure if anyone is doing that at the moment.
