    About Dude Dad:
Hi! I'm Taylor Calmus, a Colorado-based actor/comedian. I started Dude Dad© two weeks before my son Theo was born as a way to stay creative while learning to be a father. My wife Heidi and I now have 3 kids and over 300+ videos. My purpose for the channel is to entertain, enlighten and inspire.
In addition to Dude Dad©, I have been in numerous TV shows, commercials, and have regular appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live. I will also be hosting my own TV show called "Super Dad" on the new Magnolia Network / Discovery+. Heidi and the kids will also be a part of the show. I am originally from the rural community of Howard, South Dakota.

Yep, some forms of boating are extremely cheap. I've got a jonboat that's got a 2000 Johnson and has had 0 problems I couldn't easily fix for $50-100. Total spent is under $3000 and I've had it for years. Use it 2-4 times a week. Buddy got a 1979 Catalina 22 for $3000 and we sailed all over the Chesapeake bay for a few years on it without issues. Not all boats fall under the B.O.A.T acronym. Really seems to be most true with the I/O lake boats and V drive boats that everyone wants for whatever reason.

My uncle gave us his boat. I did not want it. My mom was excited to get it. The boat requires a fair bit of cosmetic work but is in overall decent condition. Thing is, we don't have the time to go on any body of water and I'm more wanting a camper than a boat because at least the camper can be used as a temporary cabin if guests come over.
I'm hoping she'll see the light when she sees how expensive having a boat is. I don't want the boat.

Great vid, reality of it though is it all depends on if you’re humble or not lol. My partner bought me a boat for Christmas this year, $500, 14ft fibreglass playmate, good overall condition and all still original. So far I’ve spent $250 on servicing and other minor repairs as required (2nd year apprentice mechanic). Looking at another $260 for boat and trailer rego and that’s it. Just something to go out fishing in and having a great day out with the fam. It’s all I could ever want. 100% will not be “bout another thousand” that’s for sure lol. If your humble you won’t break the bank, if your flashy and gotta have the best of it all then good luck to you lol

I got a family cottage in muskoka Canada. We still have a 1989 16ft charger with reinforced transom, 150xr2 racing engine from a tunnel hull race boat it’s got the 250 modVP lower unit with high flow racing prop, hot foot so you can drive with two hands and a custom gas tank because the engine chews gas. It does 87 mph and tosses water 150ft. We just got the lower unit rebuilt and it’s starting to become very hard finding parts for it. I hope pops passes or down to me so I can take it further with a custom paint job hydraulic lift and tilt and a brand new updated interior. I’ve been boating now for 35 years almost every weekend I can.

I’ve been a boater since 2005 and because I maintained my boat I didn’t break down all the time like people do. When I buy a boat I go through it and replace a the stuff that wears out. Like my last boat before I even put it in the water I put a new alternator, starter, water pump, sea pump, belt, 2 batteries, rebuilt the carb, new fuel pump, plugs and wires, coil, bilge pump and keep the old one for a spare incase of emergency so it’s set up to be used immediately, the rubber bellows and because I do all this maintenance I don’t break down on a Saturday afternoon and ruin the day but 99% of boaters do absolutely zero maintenance then complain when it breaks down.

    • @salegado71

So true, a lot of people buy a boat without educating themselves what maintenance it requires... and they arrive on the ramp only to find out the boat will not start or crank because the battery is weak. This was followed by very warm temps and the snow run off made many area waters too high and fast to land the thing. Now it hasn't rained for a month and the water levels are too low at many landings. Buy a boat, it's an exciting experience!

Holy smokes this is spot on, thankfully I did all maintenance and repairs on my boat, but now she’s someone else’s burden… $300 a trip for fuel HURTS

To be fair, my John boat can’t into big open waters like that style boat, but $20 in gas & 2 stroke oil and I can go out for the next month 💁‍♂️
I like creeks and lakes anyways.

I still remember that beautiful summer day on Halifax Waterfront, I watched a couple trying to back their boat into the water.
It was painful to watch but they eventually mamanged to do it without break anything (all the watchers include me was holding our breath), only to find out that the engine won't start. Then they painstakenly get the boat back to the trailer and drive back…

Picked up a boat and trailer out of the weeds of some dudes back yard for $300 with paperwork only into it about $800 worth of small stuff!
If I get to use it once I can still say I only paid $300! 😂

My favorite part of the boating season is watching new boat owners fail miserably loading and unloading the boat. I've watched people drag their outdrive up the ramp because they forgot to trim it up, lol.

Boat is an acronym: Bust Out Another Thousand. Unless you make your living on the sea, its just a giant floating moneypit.

I feel like you almost have to be able to work on it yourself, otherwise you'll never get to use it. When something goes wrong, even if you have the money to pay a shop -- the summer will be over before you get your boat back.

5 minutes after it's in the water: "uh-oh it looks like it's overheating". Because every used boat has a cracked block.

I'm no boat owner, but I've been a human long enough to know we get bored of stuff. So I'd bet there's at least another 2 stages in there:
    6: the novelty wears off
    7: regret

We had a plaque on our boat that said “A boat is a hole on the water into which you throw money”. Great boat, but also glad not to have the trailer backing arguments anymore!
