    I’m from South Africa been watching for almost three years and bing watched for the first year most of your previous videos from before I watched lol. I garden in a zone equivalent to usda zone of 10B and even though I can’t get everything you grow or can grow everything you grow I love watching your videos as you are so inspiring. You definitely brought me out of a dark point in my life at that point I watch every single video you post and I have been working on my property as and when I can and get plants as and when I can afford to but just being able to be back in my garden and being inspired to look outside the box and try something new. Thanks so much for your inspiration and loving family spending time with us

    I never understood why hardiness zones are the only thing that seems important on plant tags BUT if you live in a very dry hot climate there isn't much info but THAT kind of weather affects my plants BIG TIME!!!! It's one of the reasons I love your channel because you at least can understand heat 105-118. We also have that heat for months. My plants struggle so much. You are a wealth of information, THANK-YOU!!!!!

    Who else is so happy we got a bonus video this week 👍. No pressure to go back to that, Aaron and Laura. Just wanted to acknowledge that it was noticed and appreciated 🙏.
    I for one am aware of the limitations of what you can grow depending on location. “Zones” are just one aspect of the number of variables that make a difference. Elevation, high summer heat, humidity, soil types, length of growing season, micro climates, plus other variable make a difference. The things I do in a new unfamiliar location: drive or walk around the area where there are established yards and gardens and take notes at what things seem to do well for neighbors. All the better if the gardener is out working and ask questions. Or a good local garden center is a great resource for advice. Also if there is an extension agency ( sometimes affiliated with a college). Then it ultimately comes down to trial and error. 💚💚💚

    We taught our children to sign when they were toddlers too! It was great to help with communication frustrations. Be sure to include Yes, No, please, thank you & sorry. When they were older I found myself signing to them from across a room and they still knew it. If I wanted to prompt them to say thank you or stop them from doing something I would sign no. 😄

    • @justjules327
      @justjules327 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. I think everyone could benefit from learning sign language. I learned as a kid and still use it to this day, which is about 30 years now.
      I’ve worked with people who have disabilities and worked in public service jobs. It’s been so helpful to know some sign language to communicate to people.
      Like if I miss hear something, especially with all the masks these days, I can ask “I’m sorry I didn’t hear you. Did you say b or d?”and hold up a b/d in sign language. Whether they know sign language or not, they get it and can respond. It helps a lot with clarifications.
      I’ve also used it at a loud bar to sign “water” to the bartenders, or to my friends in loud places - “hey, I’m going to the bathroom.” I taught my friends some key phrases and it’s so nice to be able to communicate to them from across the room.

    I have great success planting bare root trees here in the Midwest. Many nurseries (and a few charitable organizations) here offer sizable bare root trees (8 feet +) in early spring. The trees are dormant and it is a joy to plant them. The main issue is that the window to plant them is very small and you need to plant them immediately. One of the nurseries here that sells them pots up what they don’t sell and sell them for considerably more as a containerized tree a couple months later.

    The south is difficult in its own way. Intense heat and humidity like no other. I garden in a pure sand soil in NC, but an hour north it’s hard red clay, and then 2 hours west it’s mountains and that’s a whole different environment. The conditions are just drastically different from one county to another. But I wouldn’t change it for the world. It makes for gorgeous car rides with vastly different landscapes and plants.

      @@AttnDefDis_ We moved from central Ohio to coastal North Carolina 20 years ago. Our winter is a couple months long so we enjoy most of the year and spend a lot of time inside during the heat of summer. 50% of the trees I’ve planted in our yard came as bare root, typically 4-6 feet tall when they go in the ground. All of the fruit trees I purchased have been bare root. They are typically more cost effective and seem to establish just fine. You are right though, most garden centers won’t offer bare root. I have purchased all of mine through online resources that ship. The roots usually arrive wrapped in wet newspaper shreds. I typically soak the roots in water before planting. The bare roots do need to be planted right away or trenched in, so one down side compared to pots if you can’t plant right away.

    • @mindydiaz9015
      @mindydiaz9015 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How long does it take you to see growth on your bareroots? I hate bareroots but tried some like 2 weeks ago? And I have zero growth.

    • @elizabethbetlejewski195
      @elizabethbetlejewski195 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@mindydiaz9015 Depends on the growth rate of the tree. If you’re in a colder zone, your tree is still dormant right now and won’t show any growth until weather warms, and they leaf out. Be patient with trees though. It can take a year or two for some trees to start putting on faster growth. Their first year in the ground is most stressful while they are accommodating to their new home and the roots are getting established. Keep it well watered during the hot months, and it should reward you in the coming years. ☺️

    As you're working your way through the design for the the garden areas, can you take us along in a video. It would be interesting to see/hear how you think it through. What gives you inspiration (books, other TH-camrs, long standing wishlist, etc.), what your vision is, etc. I know you'll likely change your mind about an area multiple times, but it would be fun to watch you think it through. Not a how-to-design video, just a thinking-outloud video.

    Always enjoy your weekly highlights with you and Aaron. You both keep things so real. Relative to a strawberry bed there are a couple of things I’d like to share with you. I have read that asparagus is an excellent companion for strawberries. After the asparagus are done the strawberries begin. I would guess the asparagus ferns would help to conceal some of the berries from the birds as well. I have a friend who tried this and it is working out well. Also, I’ve seen that some people paint small stones red and place them in the beds before the plants berry. Birds try to eat them, realize they are not food and then stay away from the real berries when they appear. The kids would probably have fun painting the stones.

      Best thing I ever did was buy a book on companion planting years ago. I have a small space for my vegetable garden and have always tried to grow as much as possible. I could never grow onions until I bought that book and realized it was because I was planting them near beans. Who knew! There are lists on line these days that are very helpful and tell you what to plant near what….and more importantly, what not to plant near what. I did recently buy a book for my niece who just started gardening…..Plant Partners by Jessica Wallister….less than $20 on Amazon. She’s very happy with it. I had bought “Carrots Love Tomatoes” way back when. It’s really interesting when you get into it….some things enhance the flavor or growth of other things….some plants deter pests….some things inhibit the growth of other plants. Very helpful information.

      @@altheab.8907 that book carrots love tomatoes I also bought a few years back along with a companion planting book: glad to hear you mention cause I think every Gardner should have those books-good tips and so useful, I actually keep my books with my garden gloves and hand pruners so I can remember where it’s at and refer to also pest problems and timelines …great mention thank you Althea B.

    While watching Bemjamin checking on his seeds to see if they were up, I thought about the children’s garden you built last year, and what you could do with the little ones. I bought a large bag of wildflower seeds and one of butterfly/bird mix. I scattered most of the seeds but held back enough for my neighbors’ kids. About four days before the ones I scattered started coming up, i let the kids scatter the remainder of the seed. They didn’t have too long to wait to enjoy the fruits of ‘their’ labor once the first crop of seeds popped up. Once the flowers grew i gave each child a small pair of sharp scissors ( never give kids dull scissors-the’ll cut themselves trying to use them) and allowed them to cut flowers all season long. Some days produced six lovely boquets for all of us to enjoy.
