I have to admit, I chuckled a little when I saw Aaron with his headphones and giant microphone. But I love how he is involved in the recap videos and some of the discussions you guys get into are great! You feed off each other well and where one of you lacks in knowledge of a certain area, the other excels. Sounds like a perfect match to me 🥰

@@staceyallard2692 problem is they have made Nursing programs far to easy to graduate from. I went a an extremely strict Associate Program at local community college that had 100% pass rate. It took awhile to finally sink in that i had one sitting in my house. It was a 5.0 Baldwin. I had the opposite problem as you. Because I had lived on lakes, I had too much humidity and so had the tuner install a drying bar under the piano. Worked well. After about 15 years, I donated it to a university of arts and downsized to an electronic weighted studio piano. It's definitely not the same, but I can put my headphones on and play away and not bother a soul. LOL! I am so happy for you and know EXACTLY how you feel! ENJOY!!

No dig is essential when you have spreading grass like Bermuda! Tilling/digging just breaks up the rhizomes and spreads it around. In a wet area like TN where I am, I don’t need to wait a year - couple of months works just fine. So it probably has a lot to do with the area you’re in and what type of grass/weeds you’re dealing with. Laura’s method seems to work well for her!!

I’m in southwest Virginia and I’m in the same boat as you. No dig works great for me, but if what someone else does works for them, go for it. There are many roads to the same destination.

    • @bethanykimes1444
      @bethanykimes1444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@jcking6785 Once you smother it with cardboard, etc., it’s really gone from the bed for the most part. If there are still rhizomes deep under the soil that sprout up here and there, I just keep digging it out with my regular weeding. Captain Jack’s Dead Weed Brew works pretty well too. It eventually goes away. It still creeps in on the edges just like any other bed, so I just have to stay on top of edging. Bermuda is the WORST, but it’s everywhere here. Even if I burned it out of my entire yard, it would just creep back in from my neighbors. 😬🙄😑

Hugelkultur was something I began after moving to my home four years ago. I had many fallen trees in the back of the property. It was a way to clear the logs which were already so moisture laden that they wouldn't burn. I have had great results but would recommend it only if you have a lot of precipitation. My composted grass clippings and leaves are added to the mound each winter. I'm in upstate New York with 40 inches of rain and 100 inches of snow in an average year. I grow tomatoes and peppers on the top of the mounds and vine crops on the edges. Last year I never had to irrigate a single time throughout the summer.

First to everybody in the medical field shut outs but like Laura says there are some who feel that's what they wanna do and then you find out hopefully in the beginning of the process that's not your path! Laura, I understand what you're talking about between being a "people nurturer" and a "plant nurturer."
In 1995 I became a certified home health aide. Everybody said I was good at it but I did not love it. So I stopped after five years. I took on another profession for 10 years. Then I went back to being a CHHA. I continued on for another 4yrs. But then let my certification expire. It was too stressful. I live in Meridian ID… just down the street from you 😜. Have a large garden bed about 12x40. Solid clay soil and rock and billions of weeds. I did no dig so I wouldn’t distribute weeds everywhere with tiling. I planted everything you plant and the garden turned out spectacular. Still tons of weeds but just hand pulling and lots of mulch on top helps. Thank you Laura and Aaron for your fun and helpful channel 🌷

I love these recap videos - please never stop doing them it’s a lovely hour to enjoy a cup of tea and listen to you both 😊
Re: potting soil and respiratory disease. All potting soil sold in Australia has a health and safety warning on the packaging and recommendation for wearing gloves and a mask if mix is dry and dusty. The lung isn’t “self cleaning” like some other organs of the body so when bacteria or microbes are inhaled they can take hold and cause infection and possibly lead to pneumonia. The legionnaires’ disease and potting mix concern isn’t fake news - it’s just really rare. The risk is also present with compost and fertiliser for the same reasons. Anyway, thought I would put that out there. Each country’s health authorities have different standards of risk for public health information so it’s possible that Australia is just a little more fussy than the USA on this issue.
Love your videos. Looking forward to a lovely spring with you guys as we head out of summer and into autumn 😊🇦🇺

I so agree with the top comment on the piano video! You have no idea what an inspiration you've been for me Laura! I have been stuck in my house teleworking since March 2020 and not under the best circumstance either! Gardening is now my escape and has honestly become an obsession because it's what brings me joy and I NEED it!

Last highlight video you mentioned 'powering through' an activity. I can tell you that one of my biggest life changes has come from you..and it happened over the last 4 years since I had my 60th birthday! I had always put imaginary barriers up for myself.... That's too heavy, that will take too long, I couldn't do that by myself, that's too big a project, I would need to use tools I don't know how to handle. Laura, you have helped me break down all that negative self-talk and now I approach EVERYTHING as though I can accomplish it, I just have to figure out how... and power through. You would be amazed to see the garden rooms I have created, secret gardens with paths, hydrangea gardens complete with second generation propagated plants and borders, wonderful borders. Neighbors stop and ask for tours and advice. My greatest gift to them is to share Garden Answers' name. We don't get long in this world and I thought I was a finished product when I found you about 4 years ago. I changed, grew and thanks to you added a wonderful dimension and joy to my life. Thank you.

Lol, your job realization reminded me of when I really wanted to be an air traffic controller. In senior year the counselor took me the airport to see what the job was like. This was late 70s. First impression was YES. I did want to do that. ...,.Then OMG. It was a boys club and even the idea of a female doing that was made abundantly clear was not going to happen. They made it very clear. So, I ended up in IT. Left that for same reason. Ended up in contract law, a little better but time had passed and more accepting.

We started 4 years ago growing in raised beds with the no tilling method. We live in zone 8B and it rains here almost everyday in the Spring and it gets so hot and humid in the Summer. We decided to use the Charles Dowding method because we have never been able to successfully grow tilling up our backyard. Destructive Nematodes killed everything we planted, and no pest control ever completely got rid of them. I hurt my back in 2005, and I'm handicapped so this became our main reason to use raised beds or planting and using the Three Sisters method that doesn't require that anyone dig holes in the backyard either. Also, in order to plant raised beds you must consider the permaculture before a person starts their garden and the needs your veggies, fruit, herbs or flowers have all during a season of growth. We have also decided to grow organically by using heirloom and organic seeds so that keeps us on our toes about getting rid of pests, worms, and the like. There are three of our favorite pest controllers, and those are our fingers and the water hose and planting proactively. The fingers for removing those pests, and sharing those pests with a neighbors pigs and chickens, the water hose for blasting them off our plants and lastly, proactively by using companion planting, whether it is an herb with a pungent odor or taste that bugs and worms rebuff because of the smell or texture. Last year we had our best growing season yet, and tomatoes the size of two fists put together. I couldn't ask for better and I don't have to worry about the pesticides that may go in my body either. It's been a great method of gardening for us and it gives my husband and I time together in a peaceful atmosphere doing something productive.

  • @twobluestripes

I think that for no-dig or no-till, in much drier areas (like us in Southern California), there is a need to break up some hard soil, especially if things (weeds, etc) had not been growing there previously, or no irrigation has happened (and we’re in drought years). Kevin from Epic Gardening has been interested in no-till and has tried a bed or two. He has determined that for his land, which was a dry weed field for years, he needs to till once, when establishing the bed, so that he can actually plant, and then can follow no-till methods each year on that bed afterwards.
He has interviewed Charles Dowding a lot as well, who is a big influence in the no-till, organic, compost movement and also does a lot of tests! Charles Dowding’s TH-cam channel is absolutely worth watching; his videos are generally pretty short and easy to watch, lots of updates on things he is trying out. His climate is totally different from both So Cal and your climate, but the idea of trying not to break up soil structures seasonally or annually holds up scientifically and it can be adapted to suit each climate.
In the big sharing garden in the south garden, you have irrigation all season to push nutrients downward. The more organic matter that breaks downward and is pushed downward through the soil without disturbing it, the better. Having dry, hard soil here, I totally see why you had to till to establish the planting area and actually be able to plant in it! But the success even in your first season shows how healthy your native soil was after years of just lying there unworked, full of weeds! The idea of no-till is not just better results, but actually less work in the garden. Unlike a diet, there’s less to “stick to” than the actual work to retill a planting area. For the sharing garden, you’ve tilled it enough in the beginning to make it easy enough to put plants into. You’ve also started the process of adding to the soil, including organic matter and compost. So from this point, you would just at the end of the season clear out most of the large vegetation and then cover the planting area with a layer of mature compost. Then you just leave it and let the snow and other winter precipitation work it down into the soil. Potentially, you could irrigate it before you bring in your irrigation for winter. By spring, it’s easy to plant right into. You just keep mulching the ground with compost. You could of course add whatever else you want at that time with the compost, like iron could be good for your space. Kind of a set it and forget it method.

Love your answer on the no till question. Raised in a zone 3 semi arid, 13" rainfall area and now live in zone 7, 56" rainfall area. Two totally different kinds of garden experiences. What works in one area is not necessarily the answer for another. Although I love the no till concept and feel it's the answer for certain locations, it's not the answer for every location.

How about playing Brahms Lullaby when the kids nap or at bedtime? After story time of course lol. But what a memory that would make for them. And I can totally see that head pot on a pedestal by the piano, like an intellectual & classic, love of art and plants kind of vibe. I didn’t notice the light fixture but a gorgeous chandelier would be like jewelry over it. Just thinking out loud… I also had to quit nursing when it came to clinicals and have a CNA and totally agree nurses are special people. I wish everyone would take the nursing course, even if they don’t finish, it’s been so helpful throughout life! Same for other college courses…learn, learn, learn…it’s fun! Chipping branches, grass clipping, and vegetables leaves and tree leaves maked for good composting and just to remember to water down then turn over from bottom of pile. Once a month, you can cover with tarp to cause heat which breaks down matter. I been doing this the past 10 years. I do 2 piles once a year. That way I have one ready for the next spring as it takes about a year to break down matter. Hope this helps.

Since Laura's gardening method is an intuitive & spontaneous garden style, covering a large expanse, I don't know if no-dig would suit her. It's generally for smaller, intensively farmed and carefully planned out gardens. No dig is all about not disturbing the interwoven microbiome of the soil needed to produce healthy plants; not losing topsoil to wind and runoff and weed control. It does depend on composting & cover crops and yes, moisture levels are important for correct decomposition, to create enough compost to cover your gardening space. That's where the time element comes in, but once up and running is self-renewing. Charles Dowling (in the UK) is considered the father of no-dig. It would be amazing & most enlightening to see what he would say about applying no-dig to your semi-desert growing conditions!
