- Travis Pastrana crushed the Mt. Washington Hillclimb record reaching the 6288’ summit in a stunning 5:44.72. The #199 WRX STI with a specially fitted 600hp engine actually beat the record two times, running a 5:46.28 on the first attempt up the twisty 7.4 mile race course. This is just shy of a twenty-five second gain on the old record of 6:09.09 held by Subaru Rally Team USA teammate, David Higgins, from 2014.

Coming from another Subaru guy, many people will wave, give the peace sign, or smile and nod when seeing another Subaru owner on the road. People often refer to this as a "Subaru wave" or "Subie wave." You can even google this and read some forum posts about it. But maybe you just missed the point of my joke.

Grade averages something like 11%, its steeper and narrower than Pikes Peak.

For people that think Pikes Peak is harder than this........you have NOOOO idea how narrow, off-camber, blind, over-crests and awkward transitions the Mt. Washington autoroad has. The two aren't even comparable as "roads" let alone race tracks. One was built by the Army Corps. of Engineers, the other a privately-owned, built and maintained tourist attraction.
Travis is an animal. Would love to see him beat the PPIHC record in a subie as well! So glad to see him back behind the STars of Palades.
SOLOIIguru I have been up both. Pikes peak is all paved now with a nice flat road surface. Washington is much more challenging and much more fun to watch!
SOLOIIguru I've never been to this hill climb but I did Pikes Peak, this one looks very scary. Narrow, lots of blind crests and those subtle corners that could take you off the lines. Pikes Peak has lots of hairpin but predictable enough. Oh and they paved the entire road anyway.

That run is super dangerous at that speed, do you see all those logs standing up tall, and the boulders on the side of the road saying, "Come hit me and you will die" This run is no joke. Travis Pastrana is the king!

Higgins went into a turn on the dirt section waaaaaay too hot and caught a wheel and went about 10 ft down into a ditch. A couple days before at a practice, someone flipped their car on the turn at 5:52

My dearm was to get 1sr ot 2nd at this hill climb. But now after the subaru guys showed up, i slightly readjusted my dream to a 3rd or 4th! Higgins and Pastrana are true aces! They bring with them good value and reputation to this great hillclimb! Thank you Subaru for sponsoring this great event.

For anyone that doesn't know who he is, this is the man that also landed the world's first double backflip on a dirt bike. He's also raced in NASCAR, Rallycross, and here he is breaking hill climb records.

I think the coolest part--apart from how epic Travis is--is that this car is probably the ultimate SRTUSA machine. It's the 600hp rallycross-spec engine, paired with the rally-spec chassis and transmission. Perfect combo, ultimate go-anywhere-do-anything race car. 👍 Congratulations Travis!!!!

Watching amazing drivers like Colin McRae, David and Mark Higgins and Travis Pastrana along with all the other Subaru drivers around the world is why I have "Subaru World Rally Team" decals on my rear passenger windows. I love rally and I love Subaru.

My adrenaline felt like I was driving the car myself! Travis has improved immensely since I started watching him going into rally racing.

Put everything else aside you see during this record-shattering run, Travis waves to spectators to acknowledge their support. Next year he has promised to take a lifelong blind man with him as co-driver and upon arrival at the top of the hill, introduce that same man with flawless, perfect vision.

Sorry no Subie is scaling anything, their rally cars are great but a Forester will get stuck on a mild off road trail with any rocks or hills.

This is beyond insane. His sky dive without a chute was crazy but this is crazier. I've driven through the Alps on those very tight roads between Vienna and the French Riviera in my 911 4GTS and I can really drive but there's no way I could come within 45 seconds of this time. Driving really fast on a track is one thing but driving 1000% staring death in face at every turn and straightaway is truly something

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! We did Mt Washington as part of a White Mountains Jeep event in Oct 2016 - took us 44 minutes to get to the top!!

Loved volunteering for this! I was on comms that weekend when Travis made this run and it was an awesome day. I'll be back this year to hopefully see a Subaru kick butt again!

As someone who has driven this road many times, hiked this mountain multiple times, this is pure lunacy.
Can we pleeeeaaassee get an uncut onboard version? The editing on these kinds of videos ruins it for me. One camera angle is enough, I don't care about a view of his face or the cars suspension. There are very nice onboard images and then out of nowhere the camera just switches for no reason at all.
How terrifying was the end of that road!! The drop off is ridiculous and he's foot to the floor throwing it on gravel. Legend

It's getting to the point where you can hardly tell the difference in a simulator and real life. I recently had the privilege to play around with a $30k rally simulator and even though you know you won't actually die if you crash its scary as hell. Amazing! Travis Pastrana should be in the dictionary as the definition of NO FEAR.

2017 has had it's bright spots. Hannold's climb of El Capitan was amazing to me and one of the most incredible athletic events I've probably ever witnessed. Then, there's this. As a fellow competitor at this event I can assure you that this took every bit of self-trust and concentration as any other feat that we've deemed to be impossible or incredible in our lives. This could have been Travis' most spectacular performance ever. Not everyone will understand that. This hill isn't a place that rewards showmanship with trophies. This hill only awards records and trophies to competitors who approach this with the seriousness of "If I screw up, I will die" For that Travis has my lifelong respect. This video edit was also awesome. So many cuts and the time still lines up. I'm not a video expert by any means but I really enjoyed it. Finally thank you to Subaru for both sponsoring this event and also for putting your money where your mouth is. Look this STI just proved it's salt on a hill with over 100 years of history.

Hats off to the mechanics and engineers on such an amazing machine. After watching the video. I'd have to say they had suspension dialed in. Also glad that travis has finally got comfortable enough behind the wheel to hammer that track. Well done.
We drove up this as tourists very, very slowly and it was scary as hell. When I found out there's a CAR RACE up there it blew my mind. Amazing.

It has always been a family tradition to go to the White Mountains for a week in the summer. One year, we decided to visit Mt Washington and took the shuttle van up the mountain. When we neared the 75% mark and got to the dirt road, our driving was slowed to a crawl because of how risky it was we were doing. It was quite exhilarating just to traverse the road slowly. Travis blew by it like fucking nothing. What a human.
I finished this course today with a time of about 30mins, a lot scarier when you have to share a packed road with other scared drivers pushing your car to the edge. Kudos to the fearless, it takes some guts.
I haven't seen such aggressive driving lines since watching videos of the late Colin Mcrae, it's always nice to see someone drive flat-out like that and pull it off. Huge props to Travis for such an amazing run, the guy is a legend!

Great drive. To the editor of this clip: Maybe it's just me, but I don't care about his face or what he just passed, nor how the suspensions looks. I want to see the road and how the driver handles it, so the camera placed in the middle of the car behind the drivers head was perfect and no, for an enthusiast you don't have to change angles every fourth second, I'll easily (and preferably) watch an hour of good driving from that middle camera alone!
I don't typically get much pucker factor going watching a video in my living room, but this one had me going. Damn... nice run. And so casual at the end. (I'd be throwing up !)
I rode my Z1000 up it 27 Aug 2019! What a blast! I passed like 4 cars going up and 1 bike going up. Going down was also just as fun, passed many more vehicles and 4 bikes! I made sure to NOT startle them as they saw me back there a few moments before overtaking them. Definitely a perfect road for a sport bike!

Love the way he glides the car over those off camber crests, so much feel for grip going on there.
I did it last September and the guy at the gate said there were 70mph gusts and the visibility was almost zero at the top. I was full of bravado and decided to do it. My girlfriend on the other hand had reservations. Everything was great until we got to the treeline and the wind was horrible and the clouds made it hard to see. My bravado turned to fear as I had a death grip on the steering wheel as we crawled to the top. At one point we had to pull off because we couldn't see. After 20 minutes, the clouds lifted and we took off sensing our window could close at any minute. We made it to the top and the temperature was barely 32F with wind chills in the low 20s. Had a couple cups of coffee and chatted with 4 hikers from Ireland. An hour later the clouds parted and we filed out and the view was breath taking. Made it back down and lived to tell about. It was one of the most thrilling and terrifying roads in eastern North America. This guy has some huge balls tearing up that road.
