- Doomfist is a hero that began as just a name and a gauntlet, a supervillain of the Overwatch universe was brewing behind the scenes waiting to strike.
Over a prolonged period and a mysterious attack on Numbani, Doomfist was revealed to the world as Overwatch’s 25th hero. The Doomfist we all know today is not the same as when he was first released, with many adjustments to his kit over the years that have altered his playstyle and competitive viability.
Today, we are telling the story about how a buggy melee brawler introduced into an FPS was transformed and became one of the heroes that ushered in the infamous era of GOATS.

Speaking as an off-tank main, doomfist is definitely always either the most annoying thing ever or a practical joke.
That being said, I don't have that much of a problem with him being in the meta game, as a doomfist on my OWN team gives me a feeling akin to playing Zarya with a Reinhardt.
When I play Zarya, having a communicative doom is a bigger godsend than having a rein lucio rush comp imo. He makes soo much space, does soo much burst damage, mixed with a high dmg flank Zarya we would just demolish the team.
@@user-xz9fw6lk3p don't even need to communicate tbh. If you always keep your charge and stay alive. And he ain't doing rollouts 24/7 you'll still catch him flying around quite a bit.
Schrodinger’s doom fist - either owl gameplay or absolute jokes and you’ll never know what kind of df you have on your team until he already fly into the enemy team
3:18 i mean only if uppercut doesn't screw you over by the enemy grinding against 1 pixel geometry making them not go up in the air or get pushed to the side throwing off your primary fires and denying kill.
it's honestly better to punch the enemy than go for slam uppercut since slam uppercut is super inconsistent.
doom is such a fun hero, i just wish he wasn't plagued with bugs and his abilities being super inconsistent.

I feel so bad for Doom players, as a support main, he was always a menace to see and immediately tried to warn my teammates when I saw him but now he's has no mobility, or damage, even tho he has more health, that doesn't make up for anything
the damage thing is right but the mobility thing is just plain wrong, doom's mobility is still among the best in overwatch and its made him my favorite tank to play even in comp matches

Oh my god a support main agreeing that Doom does no damage? I still see Mercy mains mainly bitching about his punch like- mate. It does 100 damage max with no empowerment and does 170 WITH being empowered.
With 400+ hours on doom I can say that his the definition of the middle child for the community, you either love him or hate him but at the end of the day his there.

@@yahia5476 they somehow lowered his skill ceiling and made him more difficult. Idk how to explain it but when I do pop off on him it feels amazing. I feel like he still has a lot of work to be done but he could be good if they change a lot about him and tanks in general
im sorry to all the victims of good doomfist players but there is nothing in this game that compares to the fun of flying around and doing combos with this man.
Only thing more fun that doom parkour is locking Cree and climbing your way to GM by pressing E + RMB zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

@@ILIKEBACON17 no she cant, she literally has no way to use her kit outside of the expected ways and even if we just look at their basic kits and ignore tech, hes way more versatile and has more risk to his plays.
Sombra can hold left click for less than a second and she can turn a hero off... Wow!
She can go invisible... thats cool but you cant do anything with it except scout and position yourself.
Her ult is a no brainer, just pop and if you hit atleast 2 with that jupiter sized ult ypure good, not very interactive lile meteor strike but i admite is hundreds of times better!
She TPs to her starting point reseting... not fun, not risky, not fair, literally a free out of jsil card with what is essentially no cooldown...
Im sorry but she simply canmot compare, i understand you liling her abd i respect that but for example i dont really play much tanks but ball is definitely more fun than lets say orisa simply because you have more to do and what you can do is versatile enough to be applicable in other ways.

He has a very low skill floor, actually, but I think that's what you meant anyway. Also, Sombra has a ton of interesting playstyles, just watch APAC OWL this past season or even someone like Fitzyhere
Playing him now is so awful... He was my favorite hero because of how unique and rewarding he was. Plus yknow, nothing beat the parkour fun.

Doomfist is the most inconsistent character in the game, which from a competitive viewpoint makes him super weak. You have to do so much and have at least 30+ hours on and a good understanding of the character's mobility options before you can start doing work with him.
But then if you just switch to Cree, you'll immediately have a bigger impact for much less effort put in.
I used to exclusively play Zenyatta -- even though I don't play anymore, I like to stare off into the sunset expecting to see Doomfist fly in from across the horizon like a majestic eagle hurdling towards me, ready to uppercut, headshot, and return to his people.
3:04 this still happens constantly! I dont know if it was just worse back then, but when you need to make fast, cludge ults, you can often end up on those 3 pixels above a door or an unreachable roof...........

Legit you either destroy or get destroyed, there is no in-between with Doom

Doom needs full attention from the team to be reliable. When he dives in you best prepare to assist him whatever you can because he can die in a split second if left unchecked.

I dont get how Doom is so "obnoxiously overpowered" but he isnt a as frequent of a pick on GM, T500 and even on OWL... its almost like hes a niche and inconsistent hero!

even though I'm a support main and hate playing against him, Doom doesn't need nerfs. Its mainly my own inability to deal with him that makes him so annoying, not his numbers or mobility. His grunts are so loud, you can hear him practically from the other side of the map. He's already such a niche pick in a meta that always favors long range hitscan characters. Though I don't want to see him buffed either tbh.
Tank Doom will probably have Hog levels of freedom...i imagine an actual mlnstrosity of a hero... i guess people will finally have reason to call him OP ahhahaahahah

He cannot exist as a Tank without being buffed up because he will be mediocre at his job of "Tank" and they cant really reduce his deadlyness, atleast not by much otherwise he will just be a glorified winston... now imagine Hog but with Ball mobility!

@@vitorvena You're forgetting that there isn't going to be a tank role anymore, it's being reworked into a brawler role - a role which Doomfist may fit into quite well.
@@Mystery-pd6jc ... my guy that isnt the point and no, tanks will indeed be more "offensive" but theyre not removing shields and im dead sure we will continue to see characters like rein, dva and sigma be leading roles of comps due to their abilities to deny damage.
To that i say, Doom will be a nightmare like i already explained, but whenever the meta demands a proper tank that can deny damage he will be miserable at it!
I can see a future where Doom is indeed worthy of being called bRokEn because of his status as a tank which will demand that the eneny team coordenates a proper shutdown or they are "Doomed" and he will be hated because of it and i also see Doom players being hated and flamed by their own team because theyre not providing damage mitigation and not picling the characters more flexable to do so just like how Hog and Ball players are because of those two heroes not having any sort of protection that can be given to teammates... theyre lurely meant to confirm kills and create space, playing without a shield will be harder and people will expect more fromthe tanks SPECIALLY when we remenber that there will only be ONE on each team!

Doom and Brig have a weird sameness to their design. Just the opposite way. Doom is supposed to reward high skill plays but really is trash at top tier and completely holds low rank lobbies hostage. Brig was designed to be the beginner friendly hero, that looses value at higher ranks. But needs too much brain for the low rank player and is way too dominant at higher ranks.

He can be frustrating to play against sometimes, but Doomfist is imo the most fun character to play as in OW. Risk/reward decisions means you live or die based on how intelligently you plan and execute your engages, and get multikills as Doom feels like nothing else in the game other than maybe getting a fat Earthshatter or Dragonblade.
Tbh the only comoarable thing is a pure Blade, nano blade on the other hand is way too effective when compared to DF and his struggles...
But yes, hes awesome!
I'd love to watch videos of this style for each hero, they'd be really entertaining and lowkey nostalgic.

As a support main, Doomfist was my greatest nightmare.. I literally had dreams where he killed would punch me to death and legit kill me.. Because everytime i was playing, all i needed to think of was "Where is doom? He should arrive here any second.. Where will he come from? How will he strike? From where?! How will he kill me?!?!" and then youd see him fying at you with his ground slam from a different planet, slam you down, knock you up, punch you into a wall, 2 tap your face or even just one shot ult you.. (I mostly played Zen and Ana :')" and the best part is when he'd fly away completely fine because no one could kill him and all his cool downs were already gone + he had a 2x health bar.

There will never be a doomfist "meta" and there has never been one. Other characters enabled him to shine. Blizzard nerfed him hard enough that he isn't dominant and complained about too much anymore. They will not make the mistake of buffing him because they know they will get a lot of complaints.
His "meta" was indeed entirely dependant on other heroes being both in and out of the meta...
Thats a thing, people say "you Either destroy or feed as Doomfist" but they dont realize why, the fact is, most heroes just need you to be good with it for you to profit but Doomfist is not like that, you have to be extremely good and well versed with everything related to his different playstyles which is already more than what 90% of the roster requires from their respective players but you also need to pray to god abd hope that your character actually works instead of bugging out OR that nobody on the enemy decides to hard counter you...
On the other hand, he still pretty hated but most of the comllaints are beyond stupid, like a Cree alone in the open with no CDs and half HP thinking he can poke a Doom, its illogical because he will close the gap and murk you... but so would a widow, tracer, hanzo, genji, even supports like ana or lucio but in the moment these players would just cry about him... specially streamers...
Zbra is a really good Doom and he likes to tilt people for content, KarQ shut him down as Ana just by "expecting" him and its in video for everybody to see... but a guy like the "Pro MLG player" Custa cannot die once to a DF during a match regardless of context because he will legit throw the game by not focusing on the gameplay just to rant about how "bRoKeN dOoMFisT" is as a hero.
The Hackfist countercomp was pretty doom focused but it's probably the closest he'll ever get

Doom is way too niche and inconcistent to lead a comp like that, in fact most comps arent really centered on a specific hero but some do but Doom isnt good enough for that privilege.
I mean u could say the "meta" thing about almost every hero, it's almost never that one hero is extremely overpowered it's that a combination of heroes is overpowered
@@nma1992 Yes but in the case where that one hero is so op that a meta is built entirely around them (Ana, Mercy and Brig for example had that happen) Doom wouldnt classify because he lacks THE most importabt thing in this game: Consistency!

I prefer the seemgly comedic, but Dangerously way more fitting name: BoomFist, as he's more of a knockouter than a dread,
a seemy funny name, that when you see what he's done it could not be more fitting.
I love these videos explaining a time before I started playing at the end of 2018. I knew Doom is a buggy hero but damn his history is wild. Watching Doom players go off on rollout montages is so entertaining to watch.
50+ bugs to this day. Most of them you have to “exploit” to get any value of the character.

@@taistealai5523 according to different sources, he was. But later on as bigger, stronger tanks like Mauga and Ramattra were released, doom became less of a tank and more of a crippled DPS.

Does anyone know if any Blizzard devs have ever given a talk or done a write up about why a lot of Overwatch's abilities have turned out to be so difficult to debug? I get the impression that there's a lot of tricky and interesting problem-solving that goes into making the geometry of these abilities feel right. It'd be great if they'd share some of what they've learned along the way.

Took me a while to realize the best way to play him was to use only 2 abilities to kill and one to run. After that I was good in mid-tier and QP.
He was always the get in get out guy yeah.

Before Doom came out I always thought he'd be a tank hero. Similar to ball.
That seems to be what blizz is changing him to for OW2.
dps doom can't be balanced, he's either going to be too weak or too strong. so making him into a tank makes a lot of sense.

I always found it funny that doom became meta after the HUGE e shift and ult nerf (3:56)
He didn't.
After those nerfs (December 2018), he was not played at all (except OTP) --- after that, he got his Slam and Uppercut CD reduced from 7 to 6 and slam was fixed to pull/push enemies again (around April/May 2019). Two months later, double shield was manifested and DF became meta.
Doom needs quality of life changes really. Very small buffs or fixing things like sliders. It's just that characters like cree still need are overpowered rn.

As a doom main maybe I’m biased, but his ult needs a buff. Should land faster so you don’t always have to predict their movements you can just move it over them without them just walking out of it. Also think they should revert his primary fire to some capacity.
Playing doom fist is the only reason I come back to over watch. His insane mobility is so addicted. Flying over roofs then hitting that 125 slam on the back like is so rewarding
That my only reason why i play ow too. Cause when i play doom its just so fun but when i have to play cassidy (cree) i just get off after that round cause its just so boring.
