You all are such hard workers! I’m sitting here exhausted just from having some of my grand children for two days and a sleepover. They are so much fun but I am always tired afterwards. 😅 I love seeing your communities garden especially because it has been such a dry hot summer here in North Carolina. hello Giselle!! i suggest you tap the top of your fizzy drink can three or four times...it will rarely fizz out. our days are not as wretchedly hot as they were. i look forward to autumn! i remember picking beans in my aunt's garden and so enjoying the freshness right off the plant! insecticides were always used...but we lived!!! we had 2 tornado watches in one week. we might get one during the summer, but it seems hurricane Beryl played havoc on everyone's weather. i hope i was correct on the gopher wood and pitch. we say it all the time when there are torrents of rain. i must vacuum the kitchen before i just give up. i have arthritis in my back and shoulders so housework takes a loong time because i need to rest. i would love to come see your valley. its so beautiful! have a wonderful blessed week. see you soon

Those strawberries look so delicious. My son was helping them harvest carrots this week at the colony I work at (I work at the school) because he loves to garden. He was given a few strawberries to bring me and they were wonderful. We were also given some carrots and peas. So yummy! Your channel helps me learn even more about Hutterite culture and my students really appreciate it.
Your picnic food looks fabulous. Your colony inspires me to do a picnic when Summer arrives here!

Hi, did you know that you can use the green leafs of the carrots too? You can use them raw in salads, make pesto, or use it for a soup for example. I am sure there are recipes in english too, i just have german ones.

Any chance you would do a Colony cookbook? I love your vlog but my favorite parts are the cooking parts. I also wonder if you compost your vegetable and green waste for adding to the garden? Kona is the sweetest girl, so attached to you.
We have a cookbook, the information on how to get it is in the community section on the TH-cam channel. Oh yes kona always has to be around us 😊
Ms. Giselle, I was at a family function tonight. (One of my great uncle's is an endocrinologist, so we were talking about cholesterol and a-fib, and the medications we are on.) My great uncle was like you have a lot to look forward to. (I'm 44, and there are longevity genes on both sides of my family. But we had this delicious desert, and I don't like raspberries. The lady friend that made said she used angel food cake, fresh berries and homemade whipped cream or whatever. I had fun, I mostly listened, I was with the older generation. My cousin was there, both of them. The girl cousin looks kind of like me, her hair is a lot shorter though. But people get us mixed up.

Giselle which of the essential oils/roller do you use? Citronella, eucalyptus, peppermint or other? Tried to search roller on website without success. My daughter is going to an archery tournament with friends and she will be walking through a heavily wooded area.
I grew up in Florida and we either used Avon skin so soft for mosquitoes but not ticks. Also we drank dill pickle juice and it was supposed to be a repellent to mosquitoes when we would sweat. It must have worked because I don't remember severe mosquito bites or perhaps I blocked it out haha
On another subject I wish I could take "hands on" Hutterite cleaning, cooking and baking courses. Love you and your community. Your Mom must be so proud of you. I'm proud of you. (Mom of young adult children. I can't stop momming.)
My 13 year old daughter was very excited to see you have the same dress she has (when you are picking carrots), and my 9 year old daughter says to tell you the carrots are making her hungry 😂😂

Fresh peas right in the garden sounds wonderful. The strawberries looked great. My strawberry crop wasn’t too good this year, maybe next year will be better.
Maybe you could try freeze dried strawberry powder in the marshmallows to make a stronger taste.
Another great video . we are grateful for the insight's you provide . I'm sure your family are happy that you have Kona's companionship on your rambles . My family prefers it if I make strawberry with whole / larger pieces of the fruit . So I put the berries in the sugar overnight . Obviously, I am not making colony quantities , but I generally make it through the year . I find making preserves a very relaxing process . You grow , harvest , then preserve , harmony 🥰😄😄💕💕, God Bless
I adore strawberries! I do, however, absolutely detest canned peas-frozen are OK-but I can eat myself full to the point of popping when raw fresh peas make themselves available to me. My mouth waters thinking of both strawberries and peas. When you and your loved ones enjoy these tasty foods later as the icy winds of winter are nipping, it must feel satisfying knowing that all the work you put into providing them is truly appreciated.

Here in southern Indiana the strawberry season would've been long gone. I haven't gone strawberry picking in many, many years. I made some jams, froze some, and made a *lot* of strawberry wine. Most of which ended up with family & friend.

We have blessed lives. Yes there is work but its the in-between stuff that makes it all worth while. Man...that mushroom was huge! And oh yeah the enjoying and eating of the things we harvest which is really rewarding. I like your natural mosquito stuff. Really enjoyed your vlog!❤

Hi Giselle, you story is so beautiful as always but just a thought, if you wore aprons, which I’m sure you could make so wonderfully, you could wear them when you are making the messy and colourful things like strawberries and beets and keep your lovely clothes from getting stained. You keep our spirits lifted and send good things into the world for us to enjoy!

We had BBQ hotdogs, our family's secret recipe. So good. My aunt brought her famous 3 bean casserole. I'm going to have to get the recipe. I'm glad I took the cauliflower because I sat next to the person who made it, she said she used Italian dressing. At my grandma and grandpa's (we are German heritage on my mom's side) we would play bat mitten in the backyard. I admire the Hutterite work ethics. Are those fresh peas? I only ever get canned here.
Has your community considered getting a freeze dryer? You could make strawberry powder with freeze dried berries.

In Alberta right now there are 147 fires burning. It is very hot and smoky whereI live. There is also a fire ban. Some communities up north were told to evacuate because of fire. I cooked beans the other day in a solar cooker called Sunflair. I had sun all day and cooked them from 9 AM till about 6 PM. They were nicely cooked. Today the sky was overcast because of smoke. I always wear a straw hat. I am lost without a straw hat. Years ago in summer I was looking all over town for a store that sold straw hats and couldn't find one. I told a guy and he said "That's because you have too much Norwegian in you". If I had a dollar for every time someone thought I was Norwegian Swedish, Danish, German, etc. In my life I would be a millionaire.
I have a dog named Zeus. He says hi to Kona. Zeus is half Maremma and half Golden Retriever. His mom was Maremma. His dad was a Golden Retriever.

Me and my three daughters and daughters in law have picked all of our fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden and pulled up all the weeds out of the garden. Growing up with a mennonite grandparents and mennonite dad and English grandparents and English mom and Amish husband and Amish mother in law they teach us kids like me and my husband are teaching our four kids and daughter in law that the weeds that we pulled out of the garden can be used to make homemade tea and and medicine and can be eaten and be used to make homemade cleaners. There are books that will use you about the weeds that can be used for teas and house cleaners and be used to make homemade cleaners and teas and medicine and can be eaten and can be used for pets medicine and pets can eat. Like catnip can be used to make tea and be eaten by dogs and cats.
Why do you have a fire if you don't cook anything over it and it's so hot outside?
