  • I'm in on safari in the Karoo National Park photographing South African landscapes and wildlife. I share safari photography tips using a polarizer. Meet some of the unique wildlife of the Karoo. Photograph the Gannaga pass, driving some of the most iconic 4x4 backcountry roads in South Africa.
    The mountain passes and 4x4 tracks are fantastic as is the scenery and the photographic opportunities. It's one of the best places for Karoo landscape photography and a must-see destination when visiting the karoo.
    This is the fourth video in the series. Join me and Basil exploring the landscape photography in this iconic region of South Africa. We drive the Gannaga pass and visit the Karoo National Park near Beaufort West, South Africa.

    I love the karoo national park and your video captured the mood and light of the karoo better than any video I have ever seen. It would be special to see a mini documentary from you on the wildlife of the karoo national park

      Thanks so much. I'd love to go back and spend some real time exploring it. It was a new destination for me but it is so beautiful. The whole Karoo is a wonderland, I love the weather and the landscapes and how hard everyone and everything has to work to live there.

    I live this video. So many memory's from my trip there. The epic mountain passes and valley are beautiful. Unfortunately I had a 2 wheel driven car making it a bit harder. And we slept outside of the park and I still blaim myself for not going there during sunset / sunrise. But Ive got a couple of nice bird shots from there.

      Hi Guido, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. It's such a beautiful area, to my eyes and one I have to explore more. Don't blame yourself, you may have missed other great moments if you'd done it differently. It's so hard to do everything on a trip, better to do one or two things and really enjoy them don't you think?

      @@WillGoodlet yeah that's right instead I took a lot of pool time and I tried some star photography. We stayed at a remote lodge in beauford West but I just didn't know enough about how to make good pictures of this. I have decent shot that I was pretty happy with. But I think I will revisit this area if I return again but I say that with a lot of areas haha

      @@GuidoVanDeWater I think returning to an area (especially for landscapes) really helps. You can't get to know an area or even see the seasonal changes if you don't keep visiting it. I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves 'to get the shot' on a one time visit. In reality, we have to take our time.

      Hi Peter, in this video it was inside the Karoo National Park itself, they have really nice accommodation. Elsewhere, in local farmhouses - one of my favourite ways to travel through the region and soak up the culture and scenery.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Neil. It's beautiful to me, I know a lot of people prefer green landscapes. The funny thing about those lions is they were about 50m from unfenced parking near the interpretive centre and watching people getting in and out of the cars ;) It's amazing how they don't generally attack people if they've never done it in the past. Most of the lion attacks you hear about are in captive 'lion parks' large enclosures where they are fed by people. They get used to seeing people and food together and they lose their natural fear of us. Wild lions are much safer to be around.

    Another great blog Will . I love the Karoo .. I have a very good friend living there who farms there . My first time there was in 2014 to do my second landscape workshop with him as he is a part time photographer/ full time farmer . Rob Southey .. great friend of mine . He does workshops around his farm and outskirts of the Karoo . Nice to see those majestic lions . The one thing on those Kudu bulls I noticed was they did not seem to have the traditional white stripes ? Maybe I am wrong . But they looked different to what I am used to seeing in Zimbabwe.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Ross. I've heard of Rob Southey but not met him. I am surprised 2014 was your first time out there!
      If I could, I would live somewhere in the Karoo. I think crossing it for the first time is one of my earliest memories.
      I'll have to go back and check the Kudu, I don't recall - thanks for pointing it out.

      @@WillGoodlet Hi again... well as you know it costs a mint to fly around and travel the planet. Rob and go back a while now .. I used to only do wildlife photography.. watching Rob over the years got my eye interested in more of the landscape side of photography . Rob convinced me to lean more that way and I have not looked back since . I intend going back once this travel ban lifts ... when that happens is anyone’s guess . But one I feel if they do get into wildlife photography must definitely understand and get into landscape photography first , this way for a few reasons they will have a better understanding of composition is and using the light or understanding how important that perfect light means in photography . The landscape photography side of things compliments the wildlife side of photography . It’s a particularly important part of photography as you already know. So many people focus too much on the portrait side of wildlife... displaying mostly the head and bodies of the animals and leaving out to me the scenery. Abstract images are important too in the right conditions. When one is compromised for distance due to focal length then always make do with what is available at the moment . Abstract images work well and I often create them when such occasions rise . The long reach lenses are at times a curse and at times a wonderful thing to have . But mostly they are very versatile to use and have on you . So I’m saying that one needs to open their minds and see things very differently from what most people would see . I have traveled much of the Cape and Namibia.. I hope to return when borders open again . I live in Australia at the moment but getting bored with the landscape here . Not much beats Africa for beauty and and landscape without forgetting the wildlife which is always interesting . Never a dull day in Africa , around each corner is something to view and photograph . I miss Africa a lot for those two elements . But I don’t miss the politics and the crime . Stay safe and well .

    What an amazing experience that must have been. Solitude for a brief time is so calming for the soul, and it's wonderful that you got to share the quiet time with your wife. Also interesting to see how the wildlife reacted to you being there, lions with no fear and then the others more easily scared, even though they rarely see people. I'm glad you had a trustworthy vehicle in that arid region for such a long drive :)

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Liesl although I can't describe these trips as quiet time I'm usually dead tired by day 2 and so is Fiona especially if there is camping involved :)! Yes, the wildlife doesn't like the sound of my voice sadly.

    Hey Wil, great movie again. Your story telling is really amazing! can you tell me some more about the gear you use for filming. Thanks.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks so much! Yeah sure, I will put it into a video so you can see how I do it. I use a Canon M50 with 11-55mm and 3 stop ND filter for pieces to camera when I have time. I have a GOPRO hero 5 attached the the windscreen and a lavalier microphone on the sunvisor - I use this a lot for responses to wildlife encounters because I don't have time to reach for the M50. I use an Insta 360 One x camera on a selfie stick for the outside vehicle shots because you cannot get out of the vehicle in many national parks. This is really useful to mix things up otherwise it would be me sitting in a car all the time! I never use the selfie stick near wildlife, they run most of the time if you change the shape of the vehicle and the lens is so wide you can't see the animals anyway. For the tighter shots of landscape and wildlife I just use my Stills cameras, the 7D mark ii and 5 D mark iii. I usually use the Canon 7D with a polariser or 3 stop nd filter (same brand as on the M50 so the colours are similar). This is why you hear me talking about Polarisers ;) I often try slow shutter shots on this camera because the video settings and slow panning settings are similar. My biggest problems are sound, and colour grading the footage from the different cameras. It would be a lot better and quicker if I could use the same camera model for all the filming!
