Hell yeah, once again listening back to back proves that even with a simpler 8-Bit machine like the Master System, emulators can't pull off SEGA's sound hardware well. Quite weird when this affects the PSG channels on the system as well, as those have always sounded INCREDIBLY simple to my ears.
Apparently they can’t even duplicate it correctly in FPGA. I’m running it on a Japanese MegaDrive (late VA6) with Mega Everdrive Pro and it doesn’t sound anything like this video.
I wonder, does the "Nuked" FM emulation core pass? It proudly touts itself as cycle-accurate, which certainly sounds like a bold claim, and is available as an option in the Genesis Plus GX libretro core (though its CPU intensiveness means its not the default option).

Master System: Here’s some Space harrier music with a message of how to insert a game. Other consoles: Black screen that makes you think that the console is broken.
The Western SMS, which had a BIOS the whole time, unlike the late addition it was in Japan is also pretty cool. The most common version displays an animated splash screen which forms into pretty much the same SMS logo seen here at every startup - even if there's a game inserted, which essentially makes it stand in for the traditional Sega logo that the games themselves would otherwise display. The "no cartridge" instructional screen is static, but if you press a certain button combo on that screen, it'll segue into an actual built-in game: Snail Maze! Later versions would take the concept of a built-in game to the next level by occasionally using that concept as the SMS version of making certain production runs of the system come with a popular game - in other words, instead of just placing that game's cartridge in the box, they'd actually make a modified version of the BIOS which contains said game and boots it in the absence of a cartridge in the slot. Hang-On & Safari Hunt, Hang-On on its own, Missile Defense 3-D with some systems that came with the 3D glasses and lightgun (Snail Maze removed), Alex Kidd in Miracle World (simplified bootsplash with only a static Sega logo), and in Europe even Sonic 1 got this treatment!
I have the PAL version of the SMS II. This makes me want to buy a Sega Mark III just for this intro. I had no idea that SMS/Mark III was capable of a bit of 16-bit sounds!
The Mark III doesn't come with the YM2413; you need a separate FM Sound Unit plugged into the expansion connector at the front of the console. It also lacks a BIOS, so if you were to turn on a Mark III without a game, it'll just sit at a black screen.
Sonic EXE Nintendo Fan no I’m talking about how the Master System and Super Nintendo are alike with their abilities to go beyond with their 8-Bit and 16-Bit sound qualities.
If we're talking about the Master System's PSG, that definitely doesn't hold up against an NES. With FM, it's a different story, but the problem here is that only Japan got the YM2413. Every other region was stuck with PSG, and I personally hate how most Master System games sound without the YM2413.
Gosh this elicits a really powerful nostalgia from me for some reason... I never played Space Harrier as a kid so I'm not sure from where it's coming... Maybe another SEGA game was heavily inspired by this theme? Any ideas? I'm having a really hard time placing it.
There is a problem when using both PSG and FM. You can hear some unintended noise at PSG.And, FM is optional for outside Japan.(Prior to SEGA MARK III), and SMS does not have FM functionality(for outside japan)
@@ThomTomful I've been told the Mark III actually mutes PSG outright when the YM2413 is active on the FM Sound Unit. This doesn't sound like a mixing issue, but rather some weirdness with how the hardware works.
